Blows me away every time as well. One of my favorite studio tracks they've ever done.

My favorite from the album. Funny thing is I used to think the old live versions I had heard were kind of meh, so wasn't expecting much from this one. But the studio track has almost a dark hauntingness to it that reminds me of the D&T Marilyn Manson cover Cryptorchid.

It's amazing how songs can shape up your life at times. Unfortunately this song sums up mine right now. I know it's not healthy emotionally but it's so hard hitting right now.

I eat my words on this one. Hated it live when I heard it and even bashed almost 7 minutes on CT. Best song on the album. Probably one of the darkest, most haunting pieces DMB has done.

It was ... unique. Those early tours certainly had moments of, "Well, let's just do this - they won't see it coming!" D&T still gets my interest, but it's hard to compare to anything from those '90's D&T tours.

This is one of the best studio tracks this band has ever created. It's up there with the Proudest Monkeys, Spoons, and LWS Captain's of the world. I've listened to this dozens of times and found something new each time. As good as it gets. It's Tim's best track by far.

I agree with this. VITR is a masterpiece. Gets better with each listen.

Searching for more comparisons for the song/style, it reminds me of Black Sabbath's Planet Caravan on Paranoid. They always had one one trippy song on their albums surrounded by all the rest of the metal. This is kind of that for DMB... so much different than their usual sound, and it's fantastic.

I see the Radiohead comparisons, as well.

I thought of this today. Spoon is my favorite studio track from DMB and this one may be up there with it.

I'm probably in the minority, but this vibe and sound is something I'd like to see the band entertain more on future releases. There's a slim chance of that happening, it's just something I wish would happen.

I just followed Stefan through VITR for the first time and was blown away by how good his playing is. I just realized I need to put my good cans on and spend some serious time following specific instruments through the better tracks.

I'm just amazed by some of the comments I've read about VITR on here...'this song bores the shit out of me'...are these people not listening??

There are some people that can't bring themselves to believe that DMB can produce anything on par with the big 3.

It really is amazing. You can pretty much do that for any of the full band tunes. Again and Again is really great to listen to with good headphones because there are so many cool Tim guitar parts and funky bass parts.

Fonzi is really an underrated player, but that is partly because he stands in the shadow of Dave and Carter. He doesn't really have his own distinct voice in the same way as Willie Weeks, Larry Graham, Stanley Clarke, or Les Claypool. But he can comp like a MF. The only time when we hear Fonzi take the lead is in prelude intros to tunes like Crush or W'tower. I would be really curious to hear a Fonzi written tune that was written on the bass. "The Dreaming Tree" is all I can really think of where he led the groove during the song's creation.

One day, I hope to hear music with just the three original members of the group. I like Tim, Jeff, and Rashawn, and I have no idea what the future holds for Buddy in relation to the band, but I really want to know what those three guys who have been playing together almost weekly (if you average it out) for nearly 30 years sound like on their own.

I think it's a staying power thing more than anything.

ED is always a surprise when it happens. (heh heh). When SU came out, I remember getting crap for saying the music was mostly going to disappear in a few years. And was right. Most of BWGK and LRB have dissappeared from the regular rotation. Same with AFTW.

The 3 were so good because they didn't sound like anything else out there. That's why they are the benchmark. Ever since Everyday, it feels like the band is actively trying to get a sound the fits with the world rather than simply create for music's sake. It's alright, it happens to a lot of acts. But Tim was a part of the sound rather than playing lead lines the whole time back on the 3. Horn and sax were integral to the arrangements on the three, less so on the last 4.

I like a lot of this album, but as a collection the tunes don't feel as together as they have in the past. Some fit better with the SD material, some with Stand Up, few really work in context of just the older songs. I love the studio VITR, but I can see how it would be a bathroom break at a show. I have yet to see it at a show and only heard boots prior to the album, and it was a skipper. The energy just vanished. Same with STDH. If LITHOG didn't have such an intensity to it, it would too.

Awesome posts, Dodo36. The problem is the crowd going into discussion/inattentive mode. I would have loved to go to some European shows...they say you can hear a pin drop.

This is a great song and my favorite on the album, but it would easily be the worst song on any Big 3 album. That said, I didn't think DMB had it in them to make something this beautiful at this point, so good for them.

Disagree. In my opinion it is miles better than, for example, Let You Down.

Its still very much a snoozer live. Studio masterpiece however

I've been listening to this song several times a week with good headphones, and today is the first day that I realized the Lovely Ladies are singing backing vocals on the chorus. It actually sounds really good - just a little choral line behind Dave.

I like WWYS more than Virginia. I should probably delete my account.

There are a handful of CT songs that I like more than my least favorite Big 3 songs. DYR, A&A, HOO, and IOY rank pretty high for me. Virginia is good, but it hasn’t really clicked for me yet.

WWYS is a much better song than VITR. That isn't a slight against the latter. The former is a DMB classic.

But thanks, I'll get right on that.

Every time I hear this song, somewhere in the back of my mind that one tiny lyric reminds me of "Cuyahoga" by R.E.M.

    "Let's put our heads together
Let's start a new country up
    Our father's father's father tried
Erased the parts he didn't like
Let's try to fill it in
    Bank the quarry, river swim
We knee-skinned it, you and me
    We knee-skinned that river red"
