    Re: Walk Around the Moon

Gave it my first listen on the good cans this morning using the best rip.

No doubt in my mind it's a good song. It feels representative of this iteration of the band (in a good way, not trying to be something else), but it's also got the essence of DMB in it. The outro is a great groove and the flute fits perfectly, the chorus is incredibly strong, and there is more going on throughout the song that I was able to discern with the good headphones. Didn't listen to Charlotte yet, but I'd imagine some of the disconnect in the verses was from it being the first time it was played. Obviously the album version won't have that, and I'm sure it will continue to get better as they play the song.

I think the chorus is probably stronger than anything on AFTW, though choruses are the weakness of that album for me. Don't see any resemblance to She, genuinely don't get where people are coming from with that.

Listening to that part in the beginning where the band kicks in, I could imagine Boyd coming in there. Some violin fills would definitely add to this.

As others have mentioned, I definitely get Raven vibes with the "feel" of the song.

I'm somewhat indifferent however I will say in previous years a song like this would have turned into a Tim overdrive solo at the end and I'm very glad that didn't happen. Love the flute solo piece.

First listen, especially from the Siruius pull, I didn't like it at all.

Now it's been in my head for three days and I especially dig the "it was blue, it was red.." sections and outro.

Agreed that violin would be great on it.

Is it a live banger energy song? No. Is it better than 75% of AFTW and CT for me? I think it may be for me.

I can hear the Raven comparisons. After listening to it a few more times, definitely like it a little more than I did at first. Jeff at the end is very promising.

I've listened to it 3 times.. If it wasn't DMB I would have turned it off after 15 seconds... Like if a new band/singer you hadn't heard of before gets into the verse singing like that.. I would immediately assume this person is really not good at singing or writing lyrics.. why are they singing this in front of people?

Listen to the Charlotte version. Already a lot better and it's only getting better from here.

Song is okay. Doesn't sound commercialized, just doesn't have any shades of the old Dave.

Acoustic Ocean and the Butterfly does imo.

I haven't heard anyone talking about Tim on WATM, probably b/c he's pretty low in the mix, but from what I can hear, he's got some good stuff going on in there, too.

Glad you said this, everyone should just listen to 7/24. Outside of just knowing it's not a soundboard, the mix is still better for every single instrument. Dave's voice, all the way to down to what Tim's doing (which is awesome). It's also a tighter performance by far. No weird delivery of the word head in the first verse.

I just can't believe how bad the sirius mix is. The non-soundboard taper pull is worlds better at letting a listener know what's going on with this song. Would recommend everyone check it out.

Chad's got it posted in the audio thread.

I have this thought quite often. I really didn't get it at first. Reading the lyrics made it worse. But, I think it might be a really interesting studio song, especially with the flute and if Tim is used sparingly like he is live. To me, those two things alone harken back to the more classic DMB most of us wish still existed.

My only problem is Dave's vocals. A lot of his new songs sound like he's straining to get his voice high, and it's kind of weird.

When I was watching him deliver this, it looked like he just couldn't contain his excitement for debuting this tune. That and then the fact this was their first show, there were a few web webs they needed to knock off.

I'm sure this is up in a few places around here (maybe even in this thread), but my opinion about the debut performance has changed dramatically after hearing Copperpot's version https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gu1grCX5csc

Have this bad boy on repeat, the mix makes all the difference.

I like it. Cool, slick music; lyrics that are a little surreal and a little sinister in places; Jeff, Carter, and Dave do a lot of cool stuff at the end. It's hard to really judge it at this point since it's only been played twice, and all we have are a tape and a bad Sirius mix. But I definitely think this could be a great studio track. DMB has a knack for making these groovy, slow burners sound great in the studio: Virginia in the Rain, Drunken Soldier, The Riff, and If Only all come to mind when I hear WATM.

There is nothing wrong with "us" people. i find their are different types of fans of this band.
    1. The older fans who fell in love with the o.g. dmb and do not like the direction the band has been going in for a decade now but still post here thinking the original sound will just magically come back.
    2. The younger fan that found the band post 2009 that likes the newer stuff and wishes they were around to catch the fab 5.
    3. The o.g. fan that was here for the fab 5 and understand that the music was going to evolve and even though its not what it once was, are okay with that and still enjoy dave and the band

i often wonder how long some fans plan on sticking around this board bitchin and complaining about something that is never going to revert back. another ten years maybe?

After a single listen off the Copperpot video, I'm liking it. Really miss there's no violin -- would be an amazing add in so many places.

Not a big fan of the sing-songy approach, but that's the direction Dave seems to take these days. Could do without RR backing up most of the song with his vocals.

I think it has potential but it needs to be tightened up a lot, while also loosening up. Lyrically it's pretty simple, but the main complaint is trying to jam too many words into a single line. I think it will sound much better in time (and in the studio). It's gotten stuck in my head a few times the last couple days and I think I can feel the groove it's going for, but these recordings so far don't capture what I'm feeling at all.
