I recently came across a twitter post of a clip of Raven from 06-20-2000 and realized it's by far my favorite version.

Any reason why it's hard to find?

with the exceptions of Benaroya Hall and the Stanley Jordan guest spot, any of the original arrangements with the non-set lyrics were the tits. I loved that original arrangement so much, the BS revision was BS to me.

After listening to all of the officially released versions this morning, I have to say the Warehouse 8 Vol. 1 from 7.8.02 is the best lyically/musically.

DMB Live 25 (4.4.02) is a close second, Roi crushes on this track, but the mix could be a bit louder.

LT. 3 is the best musically, it's just difficult to name this the best because the lyrics are a collection of nonsensical words. (Why tLWS doesn't rank on the top imho.)

LT. 25 could be considered the best, Boyd is absolutely on fire, Dave is emotional and lyrics are spot on, but Roi isn't very playful throughout and he shares his solo with RR at the end.

As you all have also mentioned, Live in Atlantic City from 2011 is very good as well, but you can't really hear Boyd until his solo.

I love the early versions. Dave’s vocals and ad lib lyrics are what make the song for me. Love how he used to sing that song with the different voices, like David Bowie, and the theme it used to have about a girl selling herself

The 2000 versions sound like Dave making up nonsense on the fly, which is basically what it was. It sounds stupid to me. No thank you. That Rhino's disc performance or the Warehouse disc version from 2002 are my go to's.


Does anyone actually like the LWS version of Raven better than Busted Stuff? That's an insane opinion to me. It's Dave making gibberish noises with the occasional real word sprinkled in.

A lot of people do. It's a sum effect of the acoustic guitar-based rhythm section, the looser arrangement with more of that groove feel that sounds and feels less mechanical and not as basic as the BS Raven. The lyrics were all over the place but it was a truly unique performance every time. The final commercial versions of Raven (and Joy Ride) just butchered the heart right out of those songs that people fell in love with at first.

I've always preferred tlws version and the 2000 versions the best. Live trax 3 and 6/21 or 6/20 have usually been the ones I do for live versions. The tour opener from 09 at msg was good as well.
