Re: The Home Theater Thread

Any chance of getting a decent home theater system for around $300? No DVD player required since I have an upconverting player.

My friend has the same problem, he has it going from his PC's "headphone" or "output" jack (either one, same issue) to his stereo.

It's through your speakers though right, not actually coming from inside the receiver?

My best guess is, if you got a designated audio card, the problem would go away.

    I'm buying two of these:

    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1151658128750

    And this receiver:

    I'm pretty excited about it.

It's out of my PowerBook's headphone jack. It gets worse if I disconnect the cable with the CD input still selected on the receiver.

I wouldn't be able to add a sound card to this machine.

I would seriously consider waiting until you have around $670 to spend.
Then you would get a decent home theater system without breaking the bank.

    Onkyo TX-SR605 $399
JBL SCS500.5 surround speaker system with powered sub - $359

I'm worrying about the sound portion of things first and then I'll move into the tv side of things...

Looking at either the pioneer 5010hd (or the new pioneer line whenever that gets announced) or the new panasonic line. As for a blu-ray player I'll either end up with a ps3 or the new bd-50...

Also, if anyone is looking for quality speakers without breaking the bank, www.axiomaudio.com is a great place to start. Their bookshelf speakers are excellent.
    Really 7.1?

Its such a waste of money on the receiver and the extra speakers unless you have a LONG room, and from you pics, it looks like you don't. By all means spend your money however, but 7.1 is just extravagant and unneeded in 90% of homes in America.

Hence the reason he said he'd wait until he has a bigger room.

My Sony home theater in a box was purchased at Best Buy for 250 and then I bought two digital audio cables for my dvd player and computer input at the time. Speakers arent THE BEST, but they worked, and the sub wasnt bad at all, you just have to mess with the settings. But yeah like someone said, if your really into buying a home theater and dont want to piece it together over time, save 700 -800 dollars and get a good one.

I used to do this also, bought an external sound card to override my internal b/c I couldn't replace it on my laptop. 80 bucks and 20 for a digital optical cable to connect to the receiver and I had the best sound out of my computer and it got rid of the hiss from my power supply and made the music sound amazing again. Best decision I ever made.

I have a 37" Philips HD LCD. I like it. Its not the best, but I like it. It has a good picture, saturated, which i like. I also had some klipsch 2.1's lieing around and use them as speakers. Not surround sound but good sound, for sure.

If anyone wants a cheap solution, they work pretty well.

50'' or bigger with pedestal speakers. He bought this massive rear projection, old school brick a few years back and is looking to upgrade to HD. Also the speaker system we do have is really, really 80's and sucks the big one.

Does he know if he wants plasma or LCD? Probably better to go plasma at that size but I really like the larger Samsung LCD's as well as the XBR 4/5 series from sony at that 52" range.

58 pz700u from panasonic is an excellent set as well.

Panasonic is coming out with a new line sometime in march/april. He might want to wait for those because they really look sweet.

paradigm or b&W speakers... to the person who posted above. (with the 5K for the system) paradigm. b&w would be more like 10K for a budget...

Not so, most receivers these days ARE 7.1, so it's not a waste of money at all.

Look at the $399 Onkyo TX-SR605, 90w/ch, 7.1, HDMI1.3a, dts-ma and TrueHD decoding, use the 6th and 7th channels to bi-amp your front speakers for more accurate crossover, hardly a waste of money.

In a lot of cases you have to go back a year or two just to find a model that ISN'T 7.1

Pioneer, Denon, Sony, Yamaha, Onkyo, Integra....how many 5.1 receivers can you find that aren't old models?

If you read my post, I already stated that the current room wouldn't ever be used for 7.1 and that you need 2-3 feet behind your listening area to appreciate 7.1 - you're reiterating what I've already said in a manner like you're refuting what I've said.

If you want to bring that in so that it's definitely under $5,000 then I'd recommend replacing the fronts with the same speakers I've recommended for the rears.

If there's any part of it you think you'd like a different option on, let me know.

You can get great sound with most budgets, but you can get screwed so easily if you're not sure what sort of price ranges a product should cost.

I spend $1225 on my first pair of Paradigm fronts. When I got the second pair it was from a different dealer and he gave them to me for $835 because I was picking up a sub as well. Now I'm a lot wiser.

Online dealers for speakers are such a good deal, especially when you're trying to fit within a budget. You can go to any audiophile forum (chances are you'll see me there too) and talk about Axiom Audio and chances you'll meet someone that thinks it's a poor decision are slim to none. Plus they give you 30 days to decide whether or not you like them.

No doubt you'll see lots of people recommending Hsu at the sub-$500 price point for a sub. For $600+ budgets you can't go wrong with SVS.

A system like this is ready for anything you can throw at it...but once you experience Blu-ray on a system like this, you'll wonder how you ever watched movies in any other way.

    Actually, price update.

The Onkyo TX-SR805 is only $699 right now on Amazon with free shipping. That's an amazing price on such a kick-ass receiver.

THX Ultra2, DSD direct mode for SACD, Burr Brown 24/192 PCM1796 DAC's, 130w/ch x 7.1, etc., etc., etc.

    http://www.amazon.com/Onkyo-TX-SR805...3013634&sr=8-1

That would bring the total cost down to $5037

Its such a waste of money on the receiver and the extra speakers unless you have a LONG room, and from you pics, it looks like you don't. By all means spend your money however, but 7.1 is just extravagant and unneeded in 90% of homes in America.
I have 7.1, but run it 5.1. Looking to buy a new home this year, so the floorplans will surely be a factor.
