Yes. He says that it lost tension in the end, and then joked that the tension it was missing was probably Lillywhite looming over them in the studio.

Busted Stuff should stay on the shelf. It's already over by thirty seconds in. Half baked song...fun to play on the drums, but that's all it has going for it.

Eh busted stuff is overrated because it’s rare. It’s ok, but definitely in the bottom tier of songs off that album.

Wish Dave still played it like he did back then. Ever since that Willie Nelson version he doesn't use the original chord voicings or the same embellishments within the chords. Always bugs me a bit.

I really like Trouble With You. Everyone would probably complain about it being played live and being to slow/boring etc, but I'd love to see it.

    Haha this irks me too.

I’ve been playing these songs on the guitar for 20 years, so when Dave changes the chords to generic basic relaxed chords (like raven for another example) I feel it’s a bit lazier. It’s very minor, and it doesn’t effect the overall song at all- just a minor annoyance

Great example with Raven. It does change the songs dynamic. Those higher chord voicings of the E and the A minor on a 12 definitely add to the way the song sounds. Those were the things that made Dave’s songs so interesting.

This may just be a guitarist thing as it turns out lol. Been playing them for 17 years myself. On the other hand with the Raven example it does make it fun to switch between both versions to mix it up.

Can the drummers of the board explain why Grey Street went from starting with that crisp fill to now where it seems to start with a half hearted “ba thumTHUD UGH”

Trouble With You should have been played at RR05. Would love to see it get played once too, much less see it in person, which I would also love to see it in person.

Crush needs to be trimmed live by about five minutes. The outro is interminable.

I could do with a less than 4 minute Rashawn solo. That Gilford one from last year on the Warehouse show is such a drag

In 2018, Carter started playing a choked hi hat sort of thing as the last hit instead of the splash. Actually, when he first changed it he let the hi hat ring out.

He also just plays it stylistically slightly different these days, sounding a little more disconnected than it did originally, and hitting the BD with the hi hat rather than that extra note before. If that makes any sense. The faster tempo muddles it up too.

You’re better off just listening to these two examples and hearing it rather than reading my explanation

Well it has its 20th anniversary (good lord) in September, so that feels totally possible this year.

It would also be great to get back to Lillywhite about AFTW at some point and see if there's more clarity about the possible trouble with that album.

Frankly there are so many conversations I want to hear with all the producers. Mark Batson for Stand Up and the 2006 sessions, their leak, and Come Tomorrow. Rob Cavallo for BW and the extra 2009 sessions, and the 2013-2016 sessions. John Alagia/Rob Evans for all the songs they've helped shape and now for the WATM pandemic sessions.

That Gorge '02 Grey St is one of my go to favorite versions. It is INSANE how much different this band sounds. Their sound was so tight back in 02 compared to now every song is a race to finish that there is no neuance to the way they play anymore. Its like a completely different band (which it kind of is)

Carter was so insanely groovy and deep in the pocket in that prime era. He still is now, just in a different way.
