Break Free was a good song (not great, but good,) that became one of the best parts of '06 thanks to the ABC outro. Without it, the song's fine, but it loses a lot of its appeal to me.

Haven't listened to STTMB or Monsters yet in this house. Looking forward to hearing the album, but waiting to release it just so it's closer to the tour is ridiculous.

That said, there's a bunch of pics floating around socials of stacks of Adele's last album vinyls being in bargain bins and good will shops. It's known that the pressing of that album and Taylor Swift's albums got bumped to the front of the queue, delaying production for TONS of artists. The pecking order was based on the most popular artists and their labels securing presstime & materials.

Then there were issues getting actual vinyl to press (regardless of color). So, I think there's a chance that wanting to ride the surging wave of vinyl sales, knowing that physical media is the only sure way to make money off of newly released music for an act like DMB (outside of MASSIVE touring revenues), may have actually been at least a modest consideration regarding the release of the album and the selected release date. That is, of course, in addition to AND after all of the delays directly related to the pandemic.

If they played ABC exactly like the Batson Sessions version with a jam at the end, I would take it over Break Free 100 out of 10 times. And I'm a fan of break free, especially at the current pace.

ABC as a "complete" piece is a far more enjoyable and interesting song. Ditching it to use part as an end jam for Break Free is an abysmal artistic decision to me. But, whaddayagunnado?

I love longer songs in general… (check my avatar) but they have to do something interesting. Crush is just the same shit over and over for 8+ mins. The radio edit is better.

Lots of DMB songs that have more interesting riffs than Break Free that people hate as full songs, Break Free on WATM is a wasted slot imo but there's no way to know what ABC would have turned into if it was completed

Friend of mine reached out to me today to let me know he heard on the radio that a new DMB album was coming out in May. So there is at least one example of DMB being promoted on terrestrial radio.

I know this has likely been discussed at length, but Jeff spends so much time recording with all kinds of musicians. I wish DMB had that kind of desire to get Jeff/Rashawn/Fonz/Carter in the studio and just let them cook!

Totally agree. That’s probably the main issue with them and new tunes. I’d settle for even Dave and Jeff just getting in there and working together.

You can tell Jeff isn't a dude who likes rocking the boat, or drawing attention to himself, so I can't see him going to Dave with a bunch of ideas and tracks and asking Dave to write lyrics and melodies for them. If the band built around some of Jeff's shit, we'd probably get some incredible material.

Jeff barely has any songwriting credits since he joined the band. Unless you think the band is building songs around Jeff's musical ideas and refusing to give him songwriting credits, I'm pretty sure we can safely assume Jeff isn't playing a major role in DMB's songwriting.

Jeff has acted like a hired gun since he joined the band, why would he bother sharing any of his unique material with the band? He’s getting Grammy nominations saving that stuff for his own projects, good on him.
