Absolutely jarring quality difference on display being played back to back with Something to Tell my Baby.
STTMB might be one of the most boring songs I've heard Dave play. E1's could be rough this Summer.

Big fan of "Monsters" after finally getting to listen. Like a lot of others, I'm very interested in what the full band arrangement will sound like.

Boring is really the best word to describe it.

It’s a good thing when the verse melody is what’s stuck in your head all day.
Especially when the bridge and chorus also do the same thing.

I dont know why people are getting all caught up in how long these songs are.

The band has enough songs that go past 7 minutes in their repertoire to play at a show

If a song like Monsters comes along at 3 minutes and gets the job done (it does) from a songwriting standpoint then whatever, its a good song- sometimes you dont need to force a horn section for a few more minutes.

Some of these songs will certainly have a long jam in a live setting. This has happened to a bunch of songs like TGIY or ABI. Even like Mercy was listed at 4 minutes on the album and in 2012 the song was played live for 8 minutes with a repeating piano riff. Or better yet Smooth Rider was 2 minutes on the Stand Up album and they played it for 12 minutes at Red Rocks (be careful what you wish for)

We already know Break Free is jammed out longer live than the studio version listed at 4 minutes.

Maybe im the only one - but, Ive never been a fan of listening to long jams from studio albums anyways. Ive looked at the studio as a way for us to see what the songs are worth, and then most certainly listen to the live version of the song 9 times out of 10- because this a live band.

I think the track length matters because in many songs we’ve come to love it’s because the song builds and eventually turns into a powerful ending. There’s numerous examples of this and you just can’t make that happen in a sub 3 minute song.

Imagine if say goodbye was written now and it was only a “tiny little song” we wouldn’t have the last verse and build to the last chorus into the outro that has that powerful staying power. That’s where the track times concern comes from. Obviously you can have a couple short ones but not all.

This is exactly how I feel. And couple that with the fact that the band hasn’t been doing much in the live setting with a lot of their new material and it doesn’t bode well for the WATM tracks. A song like WIA, for example, has been played the exact same way for years. The same is true for virtually all of CT.

It's been stuck in my head all weekend, definitely a fan of this one. Works well with Dave and Tim, really like the slides Tim adds in the chorus.

I'm excited to hear the studio cut, should be another strong tune for the album.

Quite frankly, if I had one criticism of Monsters is that it should be longer. Because I can't stop thinking about how there is ample opportunity for transition instrumentation that the band could provide that would continue to build the tension of the song or even an instrumental breakdown before the last chorus, so that happens and then the final quiet verse of the song closes it out perfectly.

Dave did a great job in how he constructed the chorus melody, to be a little bigger the 2nd and 3rd time. Overall I love the structure of the song, but at its length, the same concept for the instruments can't necessarily be that way.

And this is one of the longer ones.

So I'm personally still super worried about that, but also think this track is destined to be very good with the full band regardless. Wont' stop me from thinking what could have been though. Maybe I'll be wrong when I hear it, still open to that possibility.

I agree with this. Imagine if Last Stop didn’t have the badass ending and they just abruptly stopped before that section at the end of the last chorus.

It is literally impossible to prove that. That's why it's called faith and not knowledge.

I have no problem with anyone's faith, but this is a question that humans have grappled with for their entire existence, and there are no simple straightforward answers.

Of course it’s faith. And I have witnessed it firsthand in my life. The simple straightforward answer is either you have faith and believe and live according to scripture or you don’t. It really comes down to two choices.

Correct. Therefore, it is not "literal facts" -- you can't choose facts, they just are.

    Facts:
    1. You believe in God.
    2. Other people don't believe in God.

    Not facts:
    1. God exists.
    2. God doesn't exist.

Does God exist? Maybe. Maybe not. Who knows? Anyone on Earth who claims to know (rather than believe) the answer to that question is not being honest.

But also, what I really believe, is that this isn't really the place for this discussion.

I will be glad to respond to your “facts” “not facts” on any thread, or dm, or message board you would like. I know what the “facts” are for me personally because of what I have witnessed to me in my life. I’ll be glad to discuss it with you, like I said anywhere you would like, and back up “facts” with actual “facts”.

I believe in a God, and this God is a factual thing to me. It is not a God from any religion. It is what is personally factual to me. It is also a fact that this God does not exist to other people, and also a fact that this God does exist to other people. Am I insane?

and i've witnessed "god" first hand being an absolutely piece of shit to people. thats a "fact" too, but you christians do crazy mental gymnastics to justify the abuse along with cherry picking what parts of that scripture you live by.

anybody can make up anything and say its true if they don't provide any actual evidence to support it. just because your book has been around a long time doesnt mean its true. faith is nothing but confirmation bias.

I do believe that God is willing to show people that He exists in more than one way. The scriptures discuss people who have had direct contact with God. So obviously if you haven't searched the scriptures there wouldn't be much reason to believe there is one. I believe He's been seen more recently than just the accounts in the Bible as well.

While the verse sounds the same, he is playing it two different ways, with more full chords in the "Love won't let me go" sequences:

    Code:
    Intro/Verse 1
    E|---------------------------|
    B|---------------------------|
    G|----x-----------7----------|
    D|----6-----x-----0------7---|
    A|----7-----6-----x------x---|
    E|--9-9---7-7---7-7----5-5---|
        ^pinky

Intro/Verse 2 ("Cause love won't let me go...")
    E|---------------------------|
    B|---------------------------|
    G|----9-----9-----9------9---|
    D|----6-----x-----7------7---|
    A|----7-----6---5-5------x---|
    E|--9-9---7-7-----x----5-5---|
^ring finger, like the #41 chords

    Chorus
    E|-----------0----0--0---|
    B|---4---2---0----0--0---|
    G|---4---2---1----2--1---|
    D|---4---2---2----2--2---|
    A|---2---0---2----2--2---|
    E|-----------0----0--0---|

    Bridge ("Killer's eyes...")
    E|--------2--------2--0--0--0--|
    B|--2--2--2--2--2--2--0--0--0--|
    G|--2--2--2--2--2--2--1--2--1--|
    D|--2--2--4--2--2--4--2--2--2--|
    A|--0--x--4--0--x--4--2--2--2--|
    E|-----4--2-----4--2--0--0--0--|
Thanks so much for this. As many cool things are happening in this tune, nothing beats that open E in the chorus. It's just so warm and I really hope they managed to capture that bassy warmth in the studio.

Jesus Fucking Christ - this is what is wrong with the world. Facts, by definition, cannot be facts based on your PERSONAL experiences. They can be your experiences, your perspective, your beliefs but that does NOT make it a fact.

When water reaches a temperature of 32 degrees Fahrenheit it will freeze - that is a fact.

God exists (by the way any of the gods) is a BELIEF. That is called faith, not a fact.

    Re: Monsters

I’m a Christian and I have had my own personal journey to get there. I acknowledge it is 100% a belief and that in my opinion is where the faith component comes in. That is why I would never criticize or berate others for not having the same belief. If they ask I’ll gladly share my experience.

I believe sadly in today’s society there are quite a few people using Christianity as a cover/excuse to spread hatred. You can believe someone is not living a life you’d want to live without once again actively tearing them down.

I think the lyrics here are great by Dave because I believe that is the type action he is referencing as a monster just like people who aren’t religious can be monsters as well. It’s a call to look within and no matter what side of the religious fence you sit on evaluate how you are treating your fellow mankind and not to become a “monster”.

I am happy Dave is writing thought provoking lyrics again.
