Re: Walk Around the Moon (album) discussion

I'm not going to lose sleep over it, but deep down I know this album is going to be Come Tomorrow 2.0. It is what it is at this point. I am not Dave, so I cant make decisions for him, but for some reason he thought this was a better route then releasing songs the fan base wants to hear. There is no reason STTMB and SFTW should be on this album, but they are. He openly admitted he wasn't the happiest with how Come Tomorrow came together, but this feels like the exact same thing. I think everyone was expecting more, but in the grand scheme of things, this band just wants to tour and play songs they are comfortable with. The days of BTCS and even BW are over. Just be happy they still tour and enjoy doing it.

With these shorter new songs, it would be cool if there’s some unique songs brought into the catalogue, like Carter using an electric kit and Buddy using synthesizers. Hoping they aren’t all “tiny little songs”

There’s also a “70’s song” on the whiteboard. Maybe one of these short songs is akin to say Led Zeppelin’s Immigrant Song (2:26)

The variation of vinyl color options, with no inherent difference between any of them (i.e exclusive extras per location) is mind boggling to me. What a waste haha. But have one standard and one limited color. I don’t see anyone going around collecting these different colored vinyl like infinity stones they’re going to sit.

The song with “Heart” in the title at the time may have actually made this record

I said I wouldn’t go into much, so there’s that

All of this stuff is so dumb sometimes, but it’s still fun/fascinating

The only difference is that it's all produced by Alagia and Evans, not a mix of 3 different producers editing and cutting and taking tracks from 10 years ago and recording over top of them or taking live crowd intros and pasting them onto songs. It'll at least sound more cohesive. I really hope Break Free was totally re-recorded. If it's the same crap they pulled with IOY that'll be frustrating as hell

By the looks of things this may be the worst record they have ever put out. These new songs, the 7 that we know of are just nothing burgers. Ok MME is decent but nothing where I want to listen to it over and over again. I think the last songs that I felt that way about are Snow Outside and Rooftop.

What happened to DMB? Jesus.. I am now almost 53, first saw them in I believe 92 and sadly after all this time I feel like it's just over. All of my generation of fans are long gone. In the last 10 years I've only been to a few shows. People seem to go now not for the music but to just get drunk and have a good time. Not sure I can blame anyone at this point. I saw them at Merriweather a few years ago and they sounded good but not great. They're older now I get it.

Why can't Dave dig into his soul ( as Lillywhite said) and make the music that he is capable of? I mean this new stuff is just crap. Sounds like any local cover band can do better. MME is pretty good, not great. The rest of those 6 songs are just nothing. Does anyone in Dave's circle confront him on this? Does he just have yes men around him?

Was there a particular song that you were sure of that got left of? Or was there a particular song (or two) that were added that surprised you?

This was a sad post. I'm sorry you feel this way. I got into them a decade after you (2001), but I'm still enjoying the new songs a lot and this iteration of the band.

Roi and Boyd are gone and everyone else is older. New musicians are in the mix. You either like it or you don't. If you don't, maybe it's time to just relegate them to your past and move on.

Sort of. I knew of songs and knew some of what some people thought were “locks”. So, I guess as sure as I could be without actually having some grand confirmation if that makes sense.

    Not really, no.

For anyone who cares, qobuz has the (forthcoming release of the) album and the single as 24/48, just like Come Tomorrow was

and here's the peak/DR values for the 24/48 single of MME

Also, having never heard either of the songs on the album (I've pretty much stopped following the band), I gotta say, Dave's been working on his voice - the vocals are pretty strong

If songs like Revolution and Run to the Fire were recorded, I wonder if they'll ever be released later this year or played live.

    Thanks!

I’m only asking because it seemed odd to me that both of the Dave solo songs made it on the album (STTMB and SFTW), in addition to OATB, as well as a re-recorded Break Free. I was kind of hoping for a couple more songs we haven’t heard.

The one thing that worries me the most is Smooth Rider and Belly Full are the only 2 songs they have release that are under 3 mins and not intros.... 5 of 12 songs on this album are under 3 mins.... Some Devil only had two songs under 3 mins

I sure hope they get released or played live. Makes no sense to just scrap songs unless they are truly horrible, I mean we are getting Something to Tell My Baby which isn't great by any means lol

It’s alright man. Things change. We all get old. Dave could write the best record of his life and it wouldn’t recapture your youth. Or mine.

Im guessing this album will feel like a mixture of aftw and ct. I agree with you that nothing I've heard so far from the upcoming album particularly stands out or makes me want to listen again. As you said this isn't the same band, but what does kind of bug me is the fact they do have good songs sitting somewhere, they just choose not to release them. However, that's been going on for the past 23 years now, so I wouldn't expect it to change.

We already know the WH disc. It's entirely live songs from 2022, but none are the new songs.

Re: Walk Around the Moon (album) discussion

I empathize with this poster. My biggest gripe with DMB is they are one of the most musically talented bands I've ever listened to, and they've shown the capability to write incredible original songs. But, they have no real focus when in the studio, and it has resulted in almost 20 years of subpar LPs (though I'll give Big Whiskey credit, as it was at least an inspired album).

We haven't heard the whole album, so perhaps we will be pleasantly surprised. But, Come Tomorrow was a bad harbinger of things to come. I think that album is an embarrassment considering how good these guys are as a band. Looking at the times listed for these songs, I'm not sure how much the musicianship will be highlighted. Not to mention the inclusion of two Dave solo songs.

I still love DMB. It's my summer tradition and I will defend their Big 4 (I include Busted Stuff) to the death. I think they were on track to be as critically well-regarded as they were commercial, but the last 20 years have done them no favors. But, as I said to a buddy at a tailgate last year, "There's no band I love as much as DMB while hating a decent chunk of their songs", and the latter seems to grow with each successive album.

Merely chalking it up as a band changing and evolving is a cop-out. The quality of the material has declined considerably. But, they're so god damn good that I'll continue to see them live, because when they click, there's still no band that compares.

Did you hear if the bonus disc was supposed to be studio tracks or live tracks? And maybe they held off releasing them to save them for a bigger Bsides release down the road?
