I actually really like the Ants poster, there's a lot going on in it and I appreciate that they used an artist that isn't in regular rotation on tour.

I think this too is why I purchased. All the small details that point to the song it actually tells the sotry of the song vs the Everyday print, atleast imo.

I thought the Everyday poster was a dud. Because it had nothing to do with the actual song or its lyrics.

But that's not the case with this Ants poster... I'm not really sure what you want out of these posters.

Flames sent out an email that had the following explanation for his poster:

"As always, here is the story behind this illustration, with tremendous thanks and influence from the song's lyrics:

Somewhere out there is a small boat, and it's full of love, floating along on a beautiful day. Her key creates an opening on the surface of the water, and his song makes the opening ripple and dance. The opening leads to another world, a world full of new life and beautiful flowers. They reach down and pick up love from the bottom, and they bring it up to the top, everyday. Left to right, up and down, they push up love everyday."

So his take was whimsical, using the key symbolism that has been in other posters he's made over the years. It seems he went too far with the whimsy for most here.

The Ants poster blatantly speaks to the lyrics...no metaphor or simile here.

I don't mind either poster, but I'm less enthused by how on the nose the new poster is...it's lacks nuance and subtlety.

I think a lot us are in that spot where we don't know exactly what we want or expect from these posters, but these first two offerings just aren't it. It's most likely a combination of the chosen songs and the art that isn't really grabbing us.

Not sure if serious but he did a show poster in 2019, the tryptic for Mexico last year, and a drive in poster. Sure, he's newer to the poster scene but I'd call that regular rotation.

The bolded is exactly where I'm at. I can't really put into words exactly what I want from a song series, but a generic James Flames (whose work I actually really enjoy) and an obnoxiously on the nose literal Ants Marching ain't it.

I'm not one to spend a lot of time comparing to other bands, but the couple of Phish song prints I've seen have been more artistic interpretation of songs and generally closer to art I would want to hang in my house. And I'm not a Phish fan in any way. I'm consistently surprised by how differently the art is handled for the two bands given the shared management.

I guess I was comparing it to the more regular contributors--Methane, Status Serigraph, Flames, Eads, etc. I don't know that we'd get anything out of the Song Series that could compare to show prints, as the art is more one dimensional (specific to the song). The show prints can be multidimensional in that you can get DMB themes, venue-local themes, Combos of the two, or just make randomly good art that gets the date slapped on it. In my opinion, I have always loved the posters that nail the local theme, with DMB subtly incorporated in it the best. But like all art, to each their own.

Happy to unveil my latest poster for the Dave Matthews Band Song Series: my visual interpretation of Crash Into Me.

To me, the tune simultaneously evokes the idea of collision and aquatic references, so I chose to depict a watery goddess siren attracting a young man into turbulent emotional waves, beckoning him and the viewer towards beautiful but dangerous terrain. A molten scholar rock grotto acts as a throne for the spirit who is adorned in tattoos relating to song and contextual lyrics. White lillies appear on the her body as a reference to producer Steve Lillywhite, who produced the album Crash (and other favourites). Hair and covering garments are comprised of splashforms and wave motifs which bend and flow along with the surrounding tides. A naval bomb (ball and chain) breaks the surface as the dreaming boy draws closer. The scene is enshrined by poppies (symbolizing dreams and sleep), all encased in a decorative Mucha-esque frame. The image overall is meant to be one of sweetly flowing and shimmering beauty infused with a dash of darkness upon deeper thought (like the song itself).

This and last night's posters seem to be targeting that comic book nerd type...horny folks that want titillation in their wall ephemera. Not the stuff I'd want to hang on my wall. Great artists doing great work, but kind of missing the target.

This is coming from a comic book nerd...just a slightly "mature" one...

The poster is nice but agree with everyone's thoughts. I do think it is awesome that amid the pandemic the band is giving gig poster artists a way to still make a living.

    Interesting.

And color me crazy but I think this design does best in the non-foil. Too much going on already.

Tempted to get this but overall just don't really care for the song series.

If anything, I would do Dreaming Tree - the first song I saw live.
