The soul flys as free as rubber melting down the phone
Hi, hear the wings of the forest gather in distant future, may it be
Regarding tomorrow, it can be, we should find an effort
Sweetheart like sugar to the brain, might we think it out

Looking upwardly never seen it before, wondering how
Bright green grassy roots, travelers wandered
We could find the effort, chanced as it was
Following the hands of youth, charge a mountain

Ah, the joys of being a homeowner.

So four years ago my wife and I purchased our home knowing the furnace was on its last leg. It was only about 15 years old, but had been repaired several times by the previous homeowner. This winter was rough and the furnace was struggling to keep up with the cold weather, but a few weeks ago decided that was it. It still blows out hot air, but not nearly enough to keep up with cold temperatures. I call a few HVAC guys in the area to get some quotes and realize that the duct system that feeds into the furnace is undersized for the house. So a new furnace is turning into new ductwork, which to enlarge the ductwork they have to demo a wall in the basement, which is turning into a basement remodel.

Houses sure can suck up money. At least yours is helping the home in a bunch of ways.

We’re not to the level of spending money we didn’t plan on but we are doing a roof (full tear), windows, and interior paint (main living areas/hallway/ceiling) this year.

We replaced the furnace and added AC the Spring after we moved in (which is about 4 years ago now). Got a sweet ass deal.

    About $12k all told.

To be clear, the furnace/AC wasn’t $12k, that’s the total for the shit we’re doing this summer that I mentioned above.

The furnace/AC ran $4k. 96% efficient modulating and 13 SEER AC unit. Family friend works for a HVAC company and does installs for a living so did a side job for me basically at cost plus a couple hundred for his time.

If you can swing it, fix it now. Better than potential for breakdown and be without. And it will be so much more efficient.

My house was built in 1988 also. My favorite thing about my neighborhood being an older development is the trees. We have so many great, huge, amazing trees. My SIL and her husband live in a newer development and the lack of trees is staggering.

Love this as well. We have a huge maple in the backyard that is so nice for shade in summer when we're on the deck. It sucks in the fall, but yeah.

And we have a bunch of mature arborvitae on one side of our property line that acts as a fence, basically, between us and our neighbors. Same for in the back, there's a line of spruce. Definitely helps the privacy element.

I have two Sycamore trees in the back and they're garbage trees. Just dropping sticks all over the yard when the wind blows and the leaves in the fall are pain. But, they're over 30 years old and are holding up two swings that the girls love using, so I'm good with them.

I've planted a banana tree in the back and want a palm tree, but my wife is against that because of the maintenance.

The unit still works? I typically run things into the ground/wait until the cost of fixing them outweighs the cost of getting something new. Literally the only con to waiting is that I may be without A/C for a short period of time. I grew up without A/C for a large chunk of my youth. It's not that unbearable.

Yeah the one I’m referencing was literally on the other side of the sun, so it offered no shade to us, only the people who lived behind us, and honestly fuck them.

Plus, it was a poplar/cotton wood so it was messy as fuck. Sticky shitty seeds in the spring that got all over everything, cottonwood in the summer, and it shed leaves all season plus it was twiggy as fuck. Unfortunately it was huge so cost us a few grand to get removed plus the cost of relandscaping the area which was a few hundred extra. But whatever, it’s gone now, good riddance.

    That makes sense then.

I could not do without, so I wasn’t about to wait for when the inevitable repairs were going to be needed, and then the delay of ordering the unit was going to happen.
