Re: ** College Football Season **

Why not top 6 teams, top 2 seeds get a bye?

6v3
5v4

Lowest seed to advance plays #1 seed. Make the rankings matter and expand by 2 teams which should normally cover the power 5 and still give a slot to an outlier team.

Something I just read that blows my mind - Saban turned over his entire staff since his last title in 2017. Literally every single assistant from that year, even S&C. And he produced maybe the most dominant team in college football history. That is insane.

What reason is there to believe this? We're not some no-name school whose profile would be raised by making an extended playoff. We're losing recruits to schools like Oklahoma, Alabama and Ohio State. Getting into an extended playoff wouldn't give us a leg up on those schools, because they're already there.

I read your boy Connelly's write up on this Alabama team. He surely had the stats to back it up, this may the best team ever. It certainly (and I thought it already was) is the best offense off all time.

A part of the article I really liked was showing how Saban has rebuilt his program around offense where before it was all about Defense. Speaks to him as a coach and why he is as great as he is.

I don't really follow this logic, Matthew.

"we aren't getting into the playoffs, and the teams that we're losing recruits to are. ipso facto, we don't need to get into the playoffs because....???"

People love to complain about college coaches at schools you don't root for, but despite the dominance, I happen to think Saban is a likeable guy. Dab Swinney is obviously a sanctimonious jackass though.

If you're a kid picking Alabama or Ohio State over Texas, why would Texas making a 14 team playoff, that Coastal Carolina is in, at 9-3 change your mind?

If we're missing out on 14 team playoff, we'll get even worse recruits, so yea, we need to make it, but just making it isn't going to swing the scales much for us against the big boys.

well I mean the alternative here is to continue as is and continue not making the playoff? I think that's worse, personally

I think Texas (and other schools with similar profiles) recruits better / has more to sell if they make an expanded playoff.

Getting waxed by Bama or Clemson as a #4 seed twice in 3 years hasn't raised Notre Dame's recruiting ceiling much yet, so I don't know that getting waxed by them as a #8 seed will be a huge help to anybody.

It is a fair point, but has ND ever recruited at a top 5 level? Texas has.

So this isn't an argument against the playoff (it's probably actually an argument in favor of it), it's pure nostalgia and emotion, but I was thinking about two moments in particular in Texas football history yesterday at work.

Crabtree shaking a tackle and leading Tech to a last second win over us in 2008, preventing us from going to the NCG.
Hunter Lawrence kicking a last second FG in the BigXII CG to beat Nebraska to send us to the NCG.

If we had even a 4-team playoff back then, do I even really remember those moments today? Ultimately, they would have been inconsequential.

Do you have a link to this? I'd love to read it.

I remember even last year some were saying losing Scott Cochran would be HUGE because he was supposedly the glue of the program lol. Saban is losing several assistants to Texas with Sark and he's just gonna reload. I never worry about losing assistants anymore. Bill Obrien is gonna be the new OC, hearing rumors that Kevin Sumlin may be the new TE/ST coach, but that's just rumor right now. Also, Saban just signed the highest rated recruiting class of all time, i think.

Is there anyone beside Saban that could replace his OC with an NFL head coach and then turn around and replace his OL coach with an NFL head coach? O'Brien is already on the job and reports are that Doug Marrone will be hired soon as well. Saban is just walking around swinging his dick at this point.

It more has to do with how much he can pay them (and I say this as someone who likes Saban)

Bama doesn’t generally pay a ton more than other SEC schools for their coordinators. Sark got paid a lot but not at first.

Alabama paid their assistant coaches more than any other school in 2020, about a million more than tOSU.

According to that, they’re right in line with the other top programs in the nation.

I don't consider 12 percent more than second place to be "right in line" but that's just me

(also 15 percent more than next highest SEC school, which was the original point)
