Re: In need of some golf tips...

I sucked so bad on the front yesterday, but also got a glimpse of what the full Bryson version of my game looks like.

I had 5 300 yard drives. 2 of them followed up hilariously bad snap hooks OB and 2 of them ran through the fairway, but I chose to ignore that. So awesome to see all the workouts payoff. Cannot recommend super speed enough.

My caddie at Moraine has me tee up the ball way higher than I like to see, but it has really seemed to increase launch and reduce spin.

Only hit 1 driver on the back 9 because we didn’t want to lose money.

So much golf recently. Body is wrecked. Glad to be taking a chair nap with by baby.

I haven't played or practiced a lot recently. I went out with my son yesterday and needed birdie on 18 to shoot 80. Off the tee I hit a 3 wood OB by about 2 feet. I could have hit it and probably had a 7 or 8 iron to the green but it was OB. I was really pleased about finishing like that. In another development, I may need a new putter. My son has been struggling on the greens lately. It really hurt him in his team's match to get to the state championship last week (they lost). I've been telling him to try my putter but he never does. He put an old ping putter in his bag yesterday and was worse with that. Finally after 10 holes, he wanted to try my Odyssey O works 7. After a few holes of getting used to it, he birdied 15, 16 and 18. He had an 8 footer for birdie on 17 and would have made it had he not hit it a touch too hard and through the break. He is playing with friends this afternoon and needless to say, my putter is in his bag.

Have you ever checked out the Toulon Vegas? It’s the best version of the 7 I’ve done across. CPO has them really cheap sometimes.

Just online. I would like to get my hands on one in person. Not sure about the stroke lab shaft.

I just checked and there is 1 at the GG about 20 minutes away from me. Looks like I will be making a trip out there soon.

CPO usually has them with the steel shaft too. Big decision is which neck you want.

I’ve only seen them in the “wild” one time.

Kind of happy it's going to be a dry week here, 30+ mph wind and standing water throughout the course yesterday wasn't the best

Do you guys all use GPS devices for yardage?

I believe the neck is the same. The other neck is the 7 s. I do not want that.

No, never. Rangefinder and sprinkler heads.

We’ve got an Indian summer next week. Taking Thursday off to take the kids to the zoo, so I’m not sure I’ll be able to sneak out during the week.

It’s freaking cold here today. Had a frost delay yesterday. Does anyone know why golf courses get frost when the areas around them don’t?

I’ve got a really basic Garmin GPS. I’m not sure how useful it actually is.

I’d see if you can borrow one of each before making a decision. They both have pros and cons, and can lead to some serious over thinking of things.

I just want to know what it is to the “front” and occasionally some help with laying up in front of a hazard or going for it.

Yeah it's the latter for me, I'm usually pin high and get the yardage right on approach shots if I make a good swing but on certain courses with lots of carries I think it could help

Re: In need of some golf tips...

My season end extravaganza started on Friday. I shot a poor 92. Played the same course this morning and improved to an 84, with another 39 side for the year (6 now I think...). I play again tomorrow, Friday, Sunday (36), Wednesday and Friday (weather permitting along the way of course...)

Up until recently I used a Garmin Approach 1 watch. It was their first model and would give front/middle/back yardages and I found it very helpful. About a month ago I got a rangefinder so I ditched the watch. Then, a couple days ago I got the 'Golf Edition' of the Active 2 smart watch so I had both going today. It was certainly overkill, but I liked the watch app for keeping score. I will probably only use it for that moving forward as I prefer the rangefinder. If anyone is in the market for a good, inexpensive rangefinder I'd recommend this: https://www.amazon.ca/BOBLOV-Rangefi...s%2C182&sr=8-5

It's important to read what the +/- is on each GPS. I have seen some that have a +/- of 8 yards. Kind of defeats the purpose if the number given could be 8 yards higher or lower.

Any time I compared my watch and rangefinder there was never more than a 2yrd difference, which is net zero yards as far as I'm concerned anyway. I'm a bit shocked to see that some could be 8 yards off!

8 yards is essentially a club, that's too much of a difference to pay for imo

I’m going to start blaming my nuked irons on the GPS. Would explain why I had 140 to the middle yesterday and hit a 3/4 9 iron 20 yards over the back of the green.

It's really 16. Could be 8 in either direction.

Isn’t shooting the flag and not the bottom of the pin giving you an inflated reading too?

    I don’t have a laser. Just something I heard.

No. If you understand the math of a triangle, you know that isn't true.

Had a 48/48 from one of their further back tees so I'll take it.

The starter mentioned The Greenbrier as a spot that is a must stop which I was talking about with the boys on ride down. May have to set that up for next summer.

Surprising about the condition. If you can't get your course in good condition with the weather we have had in the last month, something isn't right.

It was nice, don't get me wrong but aside from the bunkers no exaggeration my local Muni fairways were in better condition Saturday for sure and I would say equal on greens/tee boxes. For half the price. Maybe that says more about my local muni which I gotta say was in amazing shape.

Obviously course layout is not in the same tier, just talking conditions.

Struggled my way to an 89 yesterday. Drives were awful and only made a couple of puts. I use a Garmin S60 GPS. I think it works great and is very accurate.

Played a really nice 9-hole executive course with my buddy on Saturday morning, +8 with one birdie on a par 3 where I drilled like a 35-40 footer.

I have the Garmin S1 Approach (first generation) that just gives you front/middle/back distances. I use it in conjunction with my 18 Birdies app which I use to keep score, so if there are ever any inconsistencies in distances between the two (very rare) then I will just split the distance and hope for the best
