Does “Mother’s Night” sound awfully similar to Once on a Wild Afternoon to anyone else?

And don't get me wrong, Let You Down is a fine song. But it's definitely the weak point on that album, IMHO. At least from a songwriting perspective. ("I'm a puppy for your love" isn't really much better than "Why do I beg like a child for your candy?")

Dave has self sabotaged the great ideas he had from 2015-2017 when he was building more mellowed out non wall of sound songs like Virginia in the Rain, Black and Bluebird, Bismark, and Death on the High seas. While some of them made the album they were hardly played live post come tomorrows release and replaced with mediocre/subpar songs like the "Come tomorrow", "That girl isn't into you (unless press jazz band plays it)", "She", and "Do you remember (i do but this song doesn't have replay value live)".

I still remember being at Hartford 2015 when the played the first full death on the high seas and the song debut of virginia in the rain and being so intrigued by the different vibes of the songs compared to the post roi adult alternative rock songs that came out from whiskey and AFTW.

You seem to be indicating he went away from writing mellow songs and stuck to wall of sound rock songs after Come Tomorrow, could you point out which songs he was writing more recently that he went away from? Is Shadows on the Wall too rocked out and loud?

No what i was saying is that around the time leroi got in the accident and then passed dave decided to make wall of sound music.

My issue with the recent come tomorrow era is dave has solid mellow songs from 2015-2017 that got play at concerts only to get little to no play from 2018 forward for subpar mellow songs like "come tomorrow" or "do you remember" or wall of sound songs like "She" and "That Girl is You".

I actually love Shadows on the Wall and am concerned that it will meet the same fate as Death on the High Seas did when it comes to full band concerts.

Shadows is such a cheap shot dude. It’s a tune written about quarantine during the middle of a quarantine. Clearly gonna be introspective and not at all what OP is talking about.

We’ve had this discussion before, the Can’t Stop/Bayou sound is the calling card of 4.0 live shows. And despite Bartender/LITHOG finding a mellower footing, newer songs like Birds and VITR just aren’t getting played. And that sound was disappearing from the band.

That said, I’m hopeful and tend to think that the quarantine has caused a shift, where we might see a folkier, mellower, Americana DM..with a focus on his acoustic playing/tiny songs/Prine/Simon covers, etc.

Although as long as Buddy is in the band, I’m afraid we’ll be Bayouing

Is #41 really the 41st song they wrote or why is it named 41?

I love Do You Remember, Idea of You, ViTR, Samurai Cop (moreso acoustic), Here on Out etc. but one of my biggest gripes against current DMB is actually the opposite of what you are saying. If I have to think of mellow songs he has written somewhat recently I can think of a bunch, practically every show has one or two mellow solo songs which he has written in the last couple of years. They fluctuate between something like Here on Out to Do You Remember / Can't Stop and have done so for about 18 years. On the opposite side of the mellow songs you are looking for, can you name a single song they've written since BS / Everyday that deserves to be closing main sets or encores?

Where is the next Two Step? Last Stop? Ants? I have no doubt whatsoever Dave will continue to write beautiful mellow songs for the rest of his life, he's incredibly good at it.

I will forever be bitter that they accidentally put the wrong version of Kit Kat Jam on DMB Live 25. The 6/20/03 version is perfect.

As far as post-BS set closers or encores go, I think both ABI—>AB and Drunken Soldier have great potential with 4.0. Granted, they’re not Two Step/Halloween/etc., but considering we’re at a point where SMLAM has been used to close, I feel both would be worthy additions to the rotation.

yes, same with 34, 36, and 40. #27 is the 27th song from the particular studio session when it was written.

they started playing them before they got names, so the numbers stuck.

Overall the songs dave has put out post busted stuff have been subpar period and i agree he hasn't written another A1 high energy song post BS outside Drunken Soldier.

I don't hate Do You Remember but after 2 summers i wouldn't miss it. Whereas to me Virginia in the Rain, Idea of You, and Black and Bluebird could be plugged in to fulfill daves desire to fit in 1-3 CT songs better than the overabundance of Can't Stop, Snooze Tomorrow, and That Girl Is You (sans Pres Jazz Hall Band). I think overall the band should shift back to it's classic music more and stop releasing new albums that even with a few plays kill the setlist/show.

Like many others, I enjoy the band's current live sound less than I used to, but Dave & Tim are still so good together. This Alpharetta show is great.

I agree that the band has not put out many songs since BS that could be a set closer or encore closer. Honestly, the only ones that come to mind are Hello Again, YMDT, and possibly Kill the King (if they mix in a jam). The sad part is that these songs are relatively old at this point, first played 12-15 years ago.

I went from casual fan to hardcore fan after the Gorge DVD came out, power songs haven't changed the entire time I've been passionate about the band

I mean, to be fair, they have tried to put newer songs in the power spots. We all constantly bitch about them closing shows over the classics though. I'm sure in the early days people were tired of Ants and Watchtower and Two Step closing sets, but that attitude changed over years of play. Now, if they play anything other than a big power closer, we're kinda like "ah man they closed with ________. Such a shitty show"

does anyone remember a nancies.org post from maybe '02 or '03 where someone was convinced that the space between had killed their pet eel? they were playing some music around the house & right when dave sustains the note for "cause we're walking out.. offf.. heeeeeere!" they looked over to their pet which made some sort of pained face, rolled, and floated to the top of the tank. might be a few years off but i was probably 13 or 14 at the time and i remember it being the funniest thing i had ever read. would love to be able to go back and read through that thread.

I wasn't going to live shows when that happen but i think watchtower should be banned as an encore closer. I wouldn't mind if it was played mid set only.

It makes so much sense for Dave to record "Singing from the Windows" and to release it while we're still dealing with COVID. I can't believe he hasn't done it yet.

I like the way Too Much was played in 1995, the outro was Leroi repeating the part he played after the second verse. It worked well I think.
