DMB Vinyl Releases

Is anyone else having the same issues that I'm having?

Without fail, every single time I buy a dmb vinyl there is something wrong with it. Either small scratches on the records that cause pops and clicks through entire songs to surface noise. Am I just having bad luck (with every single release)? Or is anyone else experiencing this?

Live 25 was the only one that I received with no issues. Thank God.

    get a record washer https://www.amazon.com/Spin-Clean-Re...7459794&sr=8-7

even brand new records come filled with dirt, dust and shavings. that's most likely your issue.

    Re: DMB Vinyl Releases

There is almost always going to be some small level of surface noise with vinyl. That being said all of my DMBlive albums, Crash, UTTAD, RTT, LC, all have been very clean with no distracting surface noise. Cleaning or no cleaning. What is your turntable setup/cartridge? I would recommend a spin clean regardless of your issues and an Onzo zerodust stylus cleaner. Using the spin clean once on each record in combination with semi-regular use of ZeroDust should ensure your records stay as clean as reasonably possible, save a vacuum record cleaner.

This isn't unique to DMB vinyl - the industry is reach capacity at most of the cheaper plants with current machinery, and quality is sometimes a sacrificial lamb.

But as others said, definitely get something for wet cleaning if you're buying a decent amount of vinyl. I give everything a once through, used or new, before playing.

That's the conclusion I'm coming to, also. I think dmb employs a lackluster pressing plant.

I'm not new to vinyl. I have a record washer. I wash all of my new stuff and I know that vinyl isn't perfect. It's just that every single dmb vinyl I get has an issue... usually small scratches or an insane (abnormal) amount of surface noise. It's always something. But it's like you said... cheaper plants.

There is a vast difference between dmb vinyl and, say, Pink Floyd or Led Zeppelin reissues. Or Pearl Jam's stuff. Whatever.

Come to find out, a lot of plants are using recycled vinyl for their pressings instead of virgin vinyl. You can certainly tell the difference of who is using what.

Funny enough, that's the exact one I have. I use it on every record I buy!

Do you use distilled water when washing? I actually prefer to use my SpinClean with just plain distilled water, no cleaner.

Always clean records with distilled water. No soap or solutions.

I have both an Audio Tehnica LP-120 and a Rega RP1. Both are new enough to not have stylus ware, and both tone arms are properly balanced with the correct tracking force. Same issues on both tables.

Even still... the surface noise is one thing. The small scratches are the real issue. Mostly on the DMBLive releases. I haven't gotten one yet that I haven't needed to replace. And even the replacements are "ok, well, this is the best it's going to get" type scenario.

i see. i personally havent had any issue with the stuff ive gotten, other than being dirty, but maybe im not paying as much attention. i think the dmblive stuff is produced at a low cost plant (someone here has mentioned it before) so thats probably where the issues stem from.

I was going to say that's a common issue with AT tables, but I'm not sure why you would have that issue with a Rega, what cart do you have on it?

Stock carts. My players aren't the issue, though. I probably spoke too soon. The DMBLive vinyls are the real culprits. And as someone mentioned, its because they are made on cheap vinyl. Probably explains why they are $35.00 for a 5 LP set.

    Too bad. Such a tease.

Yeah, these have been pressed at Rainbo, one of the worst plants there is (soon to be "was", they are shutting down at the end of this month). The scuffing that is causing audible issues is almost certainly due to their lack of QA and potentially worse vinyl formulation/compounds mixed with their old machinery.

Now, I will say that a few of my black DMBLive pressings have visible scuffs that do not cause anything audible during playback. In these cases, while maybe not looking great, I don't find these to be cause for return.

I do wonder what DMB will do if they wish to continue the DMBLive series on vinyl now that Rainbo is gone. Using another pressing plant is likely to raise prices for what is essentially DMB's budget-line of vinyl releases

    Re: DMB Vinyl Releases

Going to hijack this thread since it seems like OP's issues is super focused on DMBLive, and expand this to be about ALL DMB vinyl releases. I posted this as a reply in the Vinyl Thread in nDMBc, but figured this could be a good place for it, and I'm hoping for some help filling in the ?'s. Below is a list of all DMB vinyl releases, and their corresponding pressing count (or my guess in many cases). They are listed chronologically in order of their retail release, and linked to their discogs page.

If anyone has some good insight on actual pressing numbers where I have guessed (denoted with a '?'), let me know:

    2. Don't Drink the Water 12" - 50

I received Red Rocks as a gift last month and the records are ‘warped.’ We ordered a replacement which was no different. I received some other vinyl from other artists as well, no issues. I guess the choice is try to flatten or just give up...

How warped? Small warps generally don't impact playback

Well, unfortunately warped enough to impact playback. The problem sounds like a skip. Same spot on the Seek Up intro, for example, and in other places on other songs on both sets received. Perhaps they were piled horizontally on each other for a long time waiting to be shipped and deformed/warped.

How large is the warp (how far above the platter does the raised edge of the warped disc sit)?

What turntable do you have/what is your tracking force set to?

I’m just getting started with vinyl and have an LP60 so can’t adjust tracking force and haven’t measured, however I’m not having the issue with other records.

I see about 1/16” to 3/32” gap, but it’s very difficult to measure that space.

You aren't going to want to hear this but I too had an LP60 and experienced "skips" with the Red Rocks vinyl. But because of the awesome folks on these boards they recommended upgrading my turntable and said the skipping issue would go away.

My wife bought me a Project Debut Carbon turntable and the Red Rocks vinyl plays perfect on it.

There are people here who can explain it better than I can, and I doubted it at first, but it was 100% the LP60 that was causing the skipping.

    Hope this helps.

Yes the LP60 unfortunately isn't a very good turntable but take solace that you can probably move it for 60% of its value in the used market.

My friend in Buffalo was having a similar experience with the Red Rocks vinyl, he brought it over and on my Goldring GR-2 every part he was having skipping on played perfectly. They have very little QC and you'll get several different tracking measurements if you compare several different LP60s.

My guess is closer to 500 but that's just a guess.

    2. Don't Drink the Water 12" - 50

I definitely believed there were only 50 at one point but I now know that there has to be more than that. Copies distributed in Germany included a reaction sheet that was sent to a specific number of people. The copies with the "?" press release were distributed in the UK, and there are supposedly only 50 of those. There were at least 20 of them with the German reaction sheet.

    3. Before these Crowded Streets - 5,000?

A lot of them went undistributed and entire unopened cases still exist. It's rare but I'd guess that the hundreds of undistributed copies contribute heavily to it's perceived rarity. Somewhere in the 2500-5000 range seems reasonable.

    4. Space Between/I Did It 7" - 1,000?

I think this was, and maybe still is available to order from certain distributors. I've never taken the time to research but I wouldn't be surprised if it's been pressed more than once.

    5. Funny the Way it Is/#27 7" - 2,500?

    6. Big Whiskey & The GrooGux King - 20,000?

    7. Squirm/Lying in the Hands of God 7" - 2,000?
    8. Mercy/Gaucho 7" - 2,500?
    9. Away from the World - 20,000?
    10. DMB Live Trax, Vol. 1 (Blue) - 500
    11. DMB Live Trax, Vol. 1 (Black) - 1,000?

I don't know exactly how many there are but it's more than 1,000. There may even have been a 2nd run at some point. Months after release MusicToday shipped some copies (unknown how many, at least a few cases) that had a slightly different shrink wrap on them.

    12. DMB Live Trax, Vol. 2 (Red) - 1,000
    13. DMB Live Trax, Vol. 2 (Black) - 2,000?

There were a lot of issues with the black vinyl version of this. Lots of copies were distributed with the wrong 5 records (missing an LP but including 2 of another). Some of these copies contained the mutant 2 sided Sugar Will that is highly collectible.

    14. DMB Live Trax, Vol. 3 (Green) - 1,000
    15. DMB Live Trax, Vol. 3 (Black) - 2,000?
    16. DMB Live Trax, Vol. 4 (Orange) - 2,000
    17. DMB Live Trax, Vol. 4 (Black) - 2,000?

Don't know exactly how many copies there are but it seems to be quite a bit more rare than the orange version.

    18. Remember Two Things - 15,000?
    19. Recently 10" - 4,000

There are closer to 7,500 copies

    20. DMB Live Trax, Vol. 5 (Pink) - 2,000
    21. DMB Live Trax, Vol. 5 (Black) - 2,000

This one is also likely more limited than 2,000. It's possible that more copies exist and haven't been distributed but my guess is the run was closer to 1,000.

    22. Under the Table and Dreaming Mispress - ???

It's at least a couple thousand.

    23. Under the Table and Dreaming - 20,000+

Somewhere in the 18-19K range for numbered copies.

    24. Crash (Splatter) - 5,000?

Based on how quickly it sold out and how rarely it pops up on ebay I think it almost has to be less than this.

    25. Crash (Black) - 20,000+
    26. Live at Red Rocks (Silver) - 3,000

I think this one is 3500, i've seen them numbered that high. It's definitely higher than what was announced by RSD.

    27. Live at Red Rocks (Black) - 5,000?
    28. Live 25 - 2,500.

We'll see. I have reason to believe we might see more of these at some point.

    29. Live at Luther College (Yellow) - 3,000

Similar to Red Rocks, there are at least 3500.

    30. Live at Luther College (Black) - 5,000?
    31. Come Tomorrow (Smoke) - 5,000?
    32. Come Tomorrow (White) - 5,000?
    33. Come Tomorrow (Black) - 10,000?
    34. DMB Live Benaroya Hall - 5,000?
    35. DMB Live The Academy - 5,000?
    36. DMB Live Prism Coffee House (White) - 1,000
    37. DMB Live Trax (White) - 1,000
    38. Again and Again/She 7" - 2,000?
    39. DMB Live Prism Coffee House (Black) - 5,000?
    40. DMB Live Trax (Black) - 5,000?
    41. Rhino's Choice - 5,000?
    42. DMB Live First Union Center - 5,000?
    43. Live at the Hollywood Bowl - 4,000

    5500
added a few notes & opinions. Unfortunately I don't think we'll ever get an official number on most of this stuff.

Ok thanks for the responses on this and I’m glad your listening experience has improved on the upgraded turntable.

Surely there are better quality turntable options but back to the point of this thread and the quality issues with DMB vinyl, with a dozen or so other records I’m not experiencing this issue on the LP60, and there are visible defects on the Red Rocks records.

At some point I will upgrade the turntable but for now it is what it is. No need to explain tracking force, anti-skating, etc. here.

    Thanks again!

Thanks Carson! I'll put together an updated list. Some interesting notes. The other difficult thing is whether jacket numbers actually correspond with press counts (in the case of RR95 and Luther College, specifically). It's hard to say if jacket #3,500 means there was actually #3,500 albums pressed, or still the strict #3,000 but a lot of scrapped jackets/boxes. To your point, we'll probably never know.

    Interesting note on Live25...

It's likely coincidence, though. The warp doesn't seem to be so severe and the area you mentioned skipping issues (Seek Up) is where many with the LP60 had issues. The problem is that the LP60 is struggling to track through very dynamic passages (comparatively, to your other albums). It just happens that there's also a warp, but it isn't the warp causing the playback issue. It's why despite getting a second copy, you have the same issue. If you took that same disc to play on a table with calibration control, it's likely that it'd play right through the warp without issue.
