I’m trying to do the Woodlands and Dallas shows this year. Coming from the west coast and never been to either venue.. I booked a hotel a half mile from the venue at woodlands. Looks walkable, but is there anything I should know?

If this is your home venue, any info at all would be awesome (food, parking, seating, etc). Thanks!

The Woodlands is very walkable. Dallas is very much not, but they have huge lots and a big tailgate scene while there is not a tailgate at the woodlands. Tons of restaurants and bars in the immediate area though and you'll have no trouble finding folks there for the show.

Seating is pretty standard for both, with the exception of the Dallas lawn, which is like a scene out of Mad Max.

Houston is in a really nice high end area. The traffic is a pain in the ass, definitely walk. I would suggest just using Yelp to find food, tons of reviews and there are probably 15+ solid restaurant/bars around the venue. Just pick one that has the type of food you are in the mood for. Do be a little aware on seating at the venue, if you have close seats far to the right and far to the left is pretty far to the right/left. I believe during the last update to the venue they opened up the stage site lines some but about 10 years ago we were so far to the right it was like we could only see from Fonz over to Boyd.

Dallas, exact opposite. Dallas is a great city but this is not the nice part of it at all. If you are going to drive there isn't much to tell you. There are lots on each side of the venue but I've never found one to be better than the other. If you don't wan to mess with driving I would recommend taking an uber from your hotel that should be at least 4 or 5 miles away from the venue. Find a hotel north of the venue, there is nothing south. If you don't want to deal with an Uber you can get a day pass on the Dart Rail. The Green Line has a stop at Fair Park and you can then jump back on after the show, the train runs until around 12:30/1AM. For food, Deep Ellum has a nice scene these days with tons of options. What is awesome is the street has valet parking set up. There are 4-5 kioski with guys waiting to take you car. Throw them a $5 afterwards and you are good to go, they are pretty fast and I have never had an issue. Don't try and park yourself if it is busy, there is no real parking. Trinity Groves is great as well with a big side lot or valet parking options. Deep Ellum probably has 25+ bars/restaurants and Trinity Grove has about 15. Each are fun to walk around and safe areas.

If you have any specific questions feel free to PM, I've been going to shows at both venues since 2001 and my fiancee is from Houston and I have lived in Dallas all my life.

I was going to do lawn, but I'll be flying solo and I'm not sure I want to deal with Thunderdome. I made a last minute WH request for PIT just in case. What seats are best in Dallas in your opinion?

Dallas pit is great; lots of room in the back and especially on the sides. Most of the seats are fine, as long as you're not way off to the side. But even if you are way off to the side, that's easy access to bathroom and beer.

I'll be at Woodlands for my 40th birthday. Are there any pre-show gatherings? From what I remember of the venue, there isn't really tailgating.

    Dallas peeps,

I’m taking my 8 year old (her third show). Prob coming up Friday night so we can do some kid-friendly stuff Saturday morning. I went to college in the area, but that was way before kids.

Any recommendations for one or two activities that morning/ afternoon?

We've kinda given up on trying to do Ants gatherings at Woodlands. The bars/restaurants just get too crowded, and we're old and grouchy. Well, I am anyway.

All about the hotel pool pre-game now.

Perot & Aquarium --- both are right by each other (1/4 mile walk).

Heard. I'm all about the old and grouchy, myself. We are not staying in a hotel, but at the house of one of our group member's family. Maybe we'll just celebrate with an early dinner.

Damn, you fancy. If you are looking for a low scale dinner and want an excuse to go to the bathroom and skip a few bad songs there is a Taco Bell also within walking distance.

Dallas is sort of the Taco Bell of shows in general. I love my city but honestly, the venue is in the damn ghetto. The crowd for some reason is a bunch of ass clowns and the venue itself is the most uninspired boring venue I have ever been to. Dallas as a city is fairly solid. Great restaurants and museums and we do have some fun things to see and do. Our venue just blows.

Honestly, if I wasn't such a fan of this band I would skip the Dallas show. I just can't convince myself to skip a show 45 minutes from my house.

Also, for some reason year after year Dallas gets the better setlist but Houston gets the better performance.

I almost think you are brave for hanging out in the park lot (kidding, but only because there is gate security).

Also - I will say, 360 is also a terrible venue. Different reasons though - awful acoustics and that is the worst pit I have ever been in. Is it even a pit? Half the people at the show are in there. Austin though is a lot more fun to stay and party in then Dallas. I wish Texas had an awesome venue that the band actually loved.

Love 360. The pit is gigantic but they never oversell it, so you have plenty of room to find a good comfortable spot. The size and ease of scoring tickets in it is also a plus if you have a decent sized group; you can all be together without having to sit on the lawn.
