clip 4, which is at the end, and the cool strumming diddy in the begging of the video (as well as what sounds like 3 notes of Good Good Time) didnt end up on the 2006 sessions

Love the part at the end, typical Dave groove

It’s your typical simple electronic guitar riff. Very Fonz like... reminiscent of some of the stuff he used to put out on his SoundCloud channel

I think this evolved into The Riff from AFTW.

That's what makes the Citi Field version great, all intro and about 10 seconds of the rest of the song

Been listening to some albums since the producer question came up. I was wrong about AFTW. I really like it. It's more accessible than I thought. I still think that Harris and Cavallo are solid dmb producers.

I think you're probably right. Stefan probably played some licks during the early recording sessions for either Dave or Tim to expand on later in the process (Assuming they were going to bring Tim into the studio).

Why is 'ABC' listed as a Defunct Song on the Almanac, while others from these sessions are under Unreleased?

Gotta say, comparing this quality-wise to LWS is dumbfounding to me. It sounds like Stand Up 2.0...some cool ideas that aren't close to being ironed out, and rough versions of (mostly mediocre) songs we already know. It's very cool to have, especially things like Shotgun and ABC. But if they released this in 2006/2007 it would have been rightfully received terribly IMO.

same reason #36 is defunct. It turned into an outro for Everyday, and ABC basically turned into an outro for Break Free. I do think it has some more merits other than that outro, but seeing as nothing else ever came of it, I suppose it is defunct for now.

Alternatively, Gas Into Fire just became defunct because it fully turned into Drive Me Away, even though they havent released or played it live yet

I wonder if Fonz' jam in 7 from this printed set in '04 is SBC Park Song/Arabic Joint/whatever? It's in 7

    http://dmbalmanac.com/TourSetScan.as...3056101&tid=80

pure speculation of course but would line up

Most artists probably don't like the final album versions of songs. Imagine what they think of unreleased sketches?

How do we know SBC soundcheck is the same as Arabic Joint, or that Arabic joint is in 7? I haven't seen any comments at all about it other than that it exists on disc 3

oh ok, I thought those somehow got linked. Good catch on that setlist, could be that similar jam from 05. That means it would have probably been developed in spring 2004 studio sessions that developed all the new 04 songs (crazy easy, sugar will, hello again, joyride)

Who produced those sessions? I think that was before batson came in

Same. Thats why I'm going to assume there is no way it is on Disc 3, since it will probably never see the light of day and I don't want to think about how close we could have come to hearing it.

Re: The Batson Sessions: DMB Studio Efforts from 2006 Leaked - News Discussion

I haven't kept up with the discussion, really, but I was excited to hear about this snapshot of the band in 2006 and listen for myself, even though my fandom has morphed into something far more arms-length in recent years.

Listening to the sessions now, a few takeaways:
    1. Batson is a good producer. By that, I mean he's capable of generating a lot of music from kernels-of-ideas from the artist and moving in the right direction. Dave was writing good songs in this era. Far better than Stand Up-era. And Batson was gathering all those ideas very efficiently, it seems, and helping provide a framework for further work.
    2. Anyone who blames Batson for Stand Up being sub-par is just wrong. Dave was bringing just NOTHING to the table in that era, songwriting-wise. But it's a well-produced album sonically, and Batson stays out of the way, other than a few drum machines in there (itself not a mortal sin). It's a terrible album, but it's the band's fault and not Batson's.
    3. This leak etc. all reinforces my longstanding belief that there's a better band hiding in there. They're their own worst enemy, undermining their creative impulses with something far uglier and lazier at turn after turn. But they might not be terribly strong arrangers -- or, at least, they're not good COLLECTIVE arrangers, and there has been a muddled sense of artistic direction that made any interesting approach something to be avoided over the years. Commercial concerns and the fans' attitude have been part of this, and that's too bad.
    4. To anyone complaining about the guitar-and-drum-machine aspect of some of this: I'm sorry, but that's how lots of people make demos. After all, the early/classic DMB songs started with just Dave, and they were presented to the band, who then helped contribute parts. That's the stage lots of these ideas are in on the Batson Sessions: "Ready to work on."
    5. These sessions are definitely not as monumental as LWS, but there's a lot here to like. A 2nd Batson album would have been far better than Stand Up.
    6. It's possible that Come Tomorrow will be a good thing for the band. I think it's a pretty strong record, although something that I can't get passionate about. But looking back, there's a sense from the 2004-2008 era, even as a fan, that there's a lot of unfinished business there. I think the band might have some bad feelings about this era, and Come Tomorrow had an effect of tying-up a few loose ends, which is always cathartic.
    7. Based on this session, there is plenty in them-there vaults. They could definitely do a box set of unreleased studio material 1991-present, and it could be several discs, and it would include some gems we've never even heard of. Their instinct is to look to live material when there's a chance for archival releases, but they should really go clicking around on those hard drives. There's plenty, and the fans want to hear it.
