I saw that yesterday. I dont even understand what those comments were supposed to mean.. was he just openly admitting he thought the team was good enough talent wise that he was focusing on other stuff instead of coaching? Is this him trying to get fired?

Sounds like a 6 Year 5.8M/year extension to be announced shortly for James Franklin. Feel proud to say that I never for a second thought he shoulda been on the hot seat.

Surprised he got that much, but we know Penn State can be very loyal to its head coaches.

Looks like the buyout is only 2 million, so if he is ever fired, it's not a Charlie Weiss situation (x2)

Yeah for sure. My initial gut reaction was that I'd let this year play out, with the pressure on, before that type of big money, but with only a $2 million buyout, might as well lock him up.

I don't know if top 15 = top tier.

Still, I probably wouldn't put him in my own top 15 yet, but it's more of an "incomplete" than anything. If he gets 10 wins this year I'd have no problem with him in a top 15 list.

Yea top 15 is definitely not top tier.

the top tier to me is:

Saban
Meyer
Harbaugh

And thats really it. And I even question putting Harbaugh in there. But hes close and theres a big dropoff after him, especially with Stoops gone.

Agree with this, and same feelings about Harbaugh for me as well. With Stoops gone I guess he gets it by default.

I'd say Tier 1 is just Saban and Meyer.

Tier 2 is probably Harbaugh, Fisher, Swinney, Petersen, Shaw. With Gundy awfully close. And a lot of incompletes from guys like Franklin, Helton, etc.

I think Harbaugh is a really really good coach, and the best coach Michigan could have for them right now.....but he does not belong on a list with Saban and Meyer. In 6 seasons as a coach at a FBS school, he has exactly 0 conference titles.

Actually, I agree more with this. Honestly, I'd put Swinney closer to the tier 1 of coaches than Harbaugh.

I'm glad you caveated with initial brainstorming, because this is kinda bad IMO.

First of all, David Shaw and Chris Petersen definitely are top 10.

I'd dispute Sumlin, Smart, Fleck, and McElwain for sure. Ferentz, Malzahn, Bielema and Dantonio might make mine but I would have to list it all out to be sure.

But good call on Gary Patterson, I was forgetting about him.
