Their first show under the name Phish was November 3, 1983. They played one show, on Halloween 1983, as Blackwood Convention. I have the tape for the first Phish show, but I don't have a tape of the Blackwood Convention show. Jeff Holdsworth was in the band then.

    03/12/88 Nectar's, Burlington, VT
(From HPB)This was the first known live Gamehendge, complete with narration. The date is incorrect, though the correct date is not known. Actually, the members of Phish were, by accounts, at a Frank Zappa concert on the evening of March 12, 1988. Chronologically, the show contained the first known version of Tela and Forbin's, though the actual date of this show might be after their separate debuts (see May 21, 1988, where Trey calls Tela a debut).
Set I: Jump Monk, McGrupp and the Watchful Hosemasters, The Lizards, Tela, Wilson, AC/DC Bag, Colonel Forbin's Ascent> Fly Famous Mockingbird, The Sloth, Possum, Run Like An Antelope

bt.etree.org has it. They have a collection of a number of early-Phish and pre-Phish shows.

Live Phish 10 was my first Phish album I ever owned. I didnt know much about them at the time but 10 really got me into them. Other than that, 12, 6, 18.

Follow up Question. What is your favorite studio album?

For me it is Lawn Boy because it was the first Phish I ever heard and it sucked me in.

I do think Rift is the best though

I haven't listened to a studio album in a while... that being said

rift is my favorite, then lawn boy

(my 1st two Phish cd's were Rift and Lawn Boy - I still remember going to the record store and buying them both after I heard Bouncing around the Room for the 1st time)

I really like Hoist as well

going to my first show msg n2.

quick question, my gf is not into jam bands, but is into live music. she digs most of dmb, mmj, etc. and we've been to festivals also ('roo back in 05 and 06 and others). for a newbie who isn't into phish and knows almost no phish, but digs the live scene, how do you think she will come away from the show?

yeah, she is definitely in for a treat. don't beat phish music into her though, she will most likely think they are weird and judge them too quick. let her listen to some good studio & some select live stuff but not too much. the MSG shows are going to be EPIC

thats my thinking. the only show we've been to where she was very meh on was the word (randolph, north miss. all stars @ co) and that was b/c she said it was too loud and she hated that there were no words. for whatever reason it was loud as hell in there (electric factory in philly) and i can see where she was coming from b/c there were absolutely no words sung the whole show, it was just southern gospel rock blues structured jams. i dug it, but it really wasn't her cup of tea.

fwiw, she has seen trey when he guested at randall's island in 05 and was blown away by his work. she also loves wading in the velvet sea (but its really the only phish song she likes).

well, she's already judged them for sure, but she has a really open mind when it comes to live shows. there are bands that i've played for her that she doesn't really like both studio and live (songs) and then we go to the show and she likes them. jam bands she just can't get over the stereotype though.

i really think its b/c jam bands you have to follow the jam and the music. its not like you can just casually listen or pick up mid way, there is a connectivity that you need to pay attention to to understand. thats why i'm thinking in the live setting she will be blown away (hoping at least).

My girlfriend instantly liked Phish for the jams. Once she started hearing more songs and some of the "weird" lyrics she backed off a little bit. Phish shows are in your face rock and no band can sound as good live as them. Have a great first show!
