To your second point: we just had the launch of a digital only console that had backwards compatibility with its older generation. The PS Vita is download only, while the PSP had UMDs. The solution: the ability to download the games you own on UMD for a fee. New consoles aren't marketed solely as a new way to play old games, there should never be a guarantee of backwards compatibility. But it's easy enough to make digital only consoles backwards compatible, for a fee. More money for Microsoft. Hell, Sony has had no problem shipping consoles without backwards compatibility in all of the newest PS3s. And, as other reports have said, it appears that their next system may ditch the Cell system, which would mean the PS4 will probably not be fully backwards compatible, unless they find a way to emulate the Cell.
