It is true that Italians do not have a word that translates directly to "gravy". My basic understanding is it's usually either salsa, ragu, or sugo. It's an Italian-American thing, which is what I've said all along. I don't know why it's relevant what people from Italy do as it's not what I ever said.
My maternal grandmother is from Genoa.
My maternal grandfather is from Calabria (exact village unknown).
My paternal grandmother's family is from Salerno.
