Could ask same thing about their album track selection. Seems Lillywhite is only guy close to this band that understands at what point the song is done and to stop tinkering. Even he went overboard a few times (Halloween, Stay adding the LL)

To answer your question though I think it loses its original inspiration when they overanalyze it. It's why I personally love TGIY. You can still hear the joy of the original inspiration as flawed as the vocal technically is. Its real though.

Dave also tries to outwit himself lyrically (Sugar Will) way too much these days.
