I lived in Chicago burbs for 10 years before moving down to Houston 1.5 years ago.
Seeing where that's located I'd guess walking will be difficult. 75/69 is a highway that separates you from the casino. Think 50 mph speed limits. Can't really cross it as a pedestrian. Down on Choctaw Rd there may be a crosswalk but I can't remember. But like you said you can always use a shuttle so probably a good cost saving. You shouldn't have much traffic trouble driving over from there....if you're off the highway there's a back up to cross on Choctaw road but it's not bad.
You will be able to enjoy all the bars/casino stuff at Choctaw but they guard pool entry from non hotel guests pretty heavily so don't plan on that.
