a driver is much easier to hit than a 3 iron, it's probably the least-forgiving club in his bag.
i guarantee that his mis-hit driver goes about the same distance as his 3 iron. if he were using a rescue club/hybrid rather than a 3 iron, then i'd agree. but the last thing i'd recommend to a mid to low level amateur is to use a 3 iron from the tee.
