The tailgate scene at Holmdel is pretty mediocre, nothing like how Camden can get on a nice day....so for me VIP isn't worth it. I also find the security to be more of a hassle in Holmdel the closer you are to the venue. The nice thing about VIP is how close a walk it is to the entrance, whereas the free lots are a 10-15 minute walk.
Regardless of what lot you choose there's rarely any traffic buildup leaving (like there would be in Camden if you wait too long)...so really the VIP decision comes down to whether you want to pay for a 3-5 minute walk to the venue or have a 10-15 minute walk to the venue that's free.
