So Scott is an enforcer? Jeez, 6-8, 270. I guess the rangers did get the biggest guy today.

Enforcer? Scott is a boxer. He doesn't even wear skates. He just runs out there and punches guys, and gets a game misconduct.

Wow thats probably the buggest trade if the day actually.

He will do ok in a limited role. On a team like the Rangers, with a coach like Tortorella, he will not dress every game. When he does, don't plan on more than a handful of minutes a game...

... and I'm talking about possibly a hand missing a few fingers...

Like Bron said (holy hell I'm agreeing with him!), the intimidation factor is one of the intangibles he brings that kind of makes up for his... what's the word... limited tangibles.

Yeah he's not really a good hockey player. But he has been fairly serviceable this year, not too many huge mistakes...has certainly improved and can dress as either a F or D.

I cant help but think Buffalo got the better end of this deal. Hodgson has sone serious skill. And the way TSN is comparing Kassian to Lucic is laughable.

LeBrun put it about right on the deadline chat:

Sabres did well long term, Hodgson going to be a real good player. Canucks gain short term

I think the Gaustad trade is the worst of the deadline. NSH lost big time.

Not really. Kassian could easily become even better than Lucic, though probably not quite as much of a physical force.

Nashville also improved their team right now more than any other team today. A 1st is a lot to give up for a guy like Gaustad but it's still a good pickup for them to make a run. They have a strong team and good on them for going for it this season. If it fucks them in the future, even better :lol

Yeah it's a good move short term but that's it.

So it's out that Nash actually did go to CBJ and ask to be traded not the other way around. That change the perceptions a little.

Great work by Stan Blowman today. This team will be lucky to back into the playoffs again, absolutely half-assed effort at trying to improve today.

Glad Homer stayed put today.

The Avalanche and Sharks did a good job addressing their particular needs. The Avs loaded up for the future (Sgarbossa - who could end up being the major piece to this trade) and adding much-needed grit by getting McGinn (led the Sharks in hits so far this year). San Jose has really needed to get their bottom-6 rolling, and they got two solid third line types in Galiardi and Winnik. Winnik in particular could play some second line minutes if needed.

Other winners were the Sabres. Great pick-up in Hodgson... he could be their new #1 center, and I'm interested in seeing how he does with Vanek. Also, getting a first-rounder for Gaustad was a major boon.

I also like the character depth the Bruins added in Zanon and Mottau. They'll make the Bruins tougher to play against, and help out Rask and Thomas in that both are monster shot blockers. That type of depth is invaluable as the playoffs roll along and could be a difference-maker. I don't see Rolston doing too much, but who knows what he could do.

I didn't like Nashville giving up a first rounder for Gaustad, so right now I would count them as losers. BUT... who knows what Trotz could do with him? I could be eating my words here in a bit. I also don't understand why Carolina and Washington didn't start selling off assets. Guys like Mike Knuble, Roman Hamrlik and Jaroslav Spacek could've at least gotten them something in terms of consolation. I would count them as losers as well. Chicago not addressing their offensive needs was disappointing as well.

But, in fairness to the losers, this was a tough trade market this season.

Re: NHL 2011/2012 Thread

Flyers won in their own right this deadline. Got two d'men last week that filled roles needed and didn't need to trade a single one of their rookies. They pretty much knocked two rookies out of the line up (MA Bourdon - physical by over-agressive/Gustafsson - undersized) and replaced them with two big bodies who play the position well (Grossman/Kubina).

They kept JvR, kept their faith in Bryz and didn't have to ship Read/Couturier/Schenn/Zolnierczyk for a rental that wouldn't have made much more of a difference than what they had already.

They just need JvR to continue playing strong and start potting goals, Briere and Jagr to wake up and the defense to tighten up.

Apparently the Sharks offered Philly Niemi for JVR last week, Philly said no.

Re: NHL 2011/2012 Thread

I'm a happy, HAPPY Sabres fan today. I've never been a huge fan of Kassian and he's done little to improve that in his games with the club this year. Hodgson could be what we're looking for in a top-line center, I'm excited to see how he plays with Vanek. Kassian will never be a Lucic. He certainly has that potential, but it's been said that the work ethic isn't there.

And Gaustad (and a 4th) for a 1st round pick? Blows my mind that they could get a 1st for a guy that basically goes out to win faceoffs and nothing else. He's not as physical as people make him out to be, he used to be, but it's declined over recent years. Great guy, but he can be replaced.

Preds have to be the overall winner, made some damn good additions to that team. Liked the Sharks and B's moves as well. Hawks lost big time on this deadline, can't even get into that now so disgusted with their showing today. Some serious issues going on in that organization right now along with a GM that has no clue what he's doing.

Giving up a 1st for Gaustad prevents them from being the winner today.

Don't think so. This may be the only shot this organization ever has at a cup with Suter and Weber impending free agency. They recognized that and are going for it and I don't fault them for that. They will be a bitch to play come postseason.

Need faceoffs won? Goose is the guy. Need goals/assists/big hits/fights? Look elsewhere. He's a shell of his former self as he approaches 30 years old.

Re: NHL 2011/2012 Thread

They'll bring back one of them. And with a guy like Rinne in net they'll be in the hunt every year. They're costing themselves in the future and Gaustad isn't really a piece that puts you over the top.
