Wait until you hit 40 man, you lace up the skates when you can and for the first 10 minutes or so they feel like you are wearing a pair of ski boots until you get some adrenaline pumping. :lol

Hope you had a good one man! :)

Stanley Cup you just need 16. President's Trophy you get a lot more than that. What's better 16 or 50+? Right? lol

For sure.

It's amazing how much hockey fans in general fixate on small flashes of greatness. It takes a real champ the courage to be great over 82 games instead of a much smaller fraction than that

So does this guy.

Caps are 2 time defending champs as far as I’m concerned. Sucks everyone except me and Brohan have to deal with inferiority. But it does look like there will be no 3-peat this year. Guess ya can’t win em all!

Lol wow, I have not watched much hockey since the trade deadline. These young Rangers have a long way to go. Caps making them look like a College team already.

Had to look it up. 8 since the trophy was introduced in 1985-86. And 3 times they've lost in the finals. So only 13 out of the 32 times they've made it to the final round. 6 times they've lost in round 1. So almost as many have won the Cup as have lost in round 1. It's why the NHL playoffs are so exciting...and nerve-racking.

I just noticed I typed 13 and not 11. So even worse for the #1 teams.

That is a fascinating stat. Makes me even more excited for the playoffs.

Re: The NHL Thread (Golden Knights are alright)

NBA fans would tell us that sucks and they want the best teams in the finals. Well if they were the best, wouldn't they be in the finals? It's a different sport and all that and I get that but that's the argument you always get back. If you want the best 4 records in your final 4 just start the playoffs with 4 teams.

Agreed. That argument makes no sense to me. Last season Nashville got the second wild card and made it to the final, did the fact that they were not a top 4 team diminish what they accomplished? In the MLB the Yankees had a come back win in the wild card game then came storming back from a 2 games to none hole to win the 5 game ALDS and then went on to force a game 7 in t he ALCS - was that not exciting to watch? Is an NFL WC team who makes the Super Bowl any less worthy of being in the playoffs? I do not get the gripe there, so long as it makes for exciting sports why complain about the playoff format of another sport - perhaps they enjoy the fact that one single player can literally win a game for their team by racking up 70 points or something - NA is like no other sport in that manner where a single player can win a game, the only comparison I can think of is a starting pitcher bur even he can only pitch every 4 (sometimes 3) days and still needs his fielders and run support to win.

Re: The NHL Thread (Golden Knights are alright)

The NFL is the only one where you have plenty of instances where the best team isn't in the Super Bowl. It's an "any given Sunday" sport honestly.

The playoff series is designed to show which teams are the best equipped at making it to the final. There is less reliance on one bad game by the quarterback. Imagine the NHL where one bad game by the goalie costs the top seed a first-round matchup because it's a best of one series? That is not the case.

Re: The NHL Thread (Golden Knights are alright)

I will always argue that the purpose of the playoff tournament is not to determine the “best” team, but simply the winner of the tournament. And that’s perfectly fine! The term “best,” is often times, way too subjective. In the NHL this season, you can make strong arguments that either Tampa, Boston, Nashville, or Vegas is the “best” team. Only one of them can win the cup, and it is possible neither of them will.

The regular season distills the better teams and throws them into a tournament. The “best” team may not win, and I think that makes playoffs in any sport great. It allows for giant killers. Not many would argue that the 2007 Giants were better than the 18-1 Patriots, but they still won the tournament.

If you don’t like the idea of playoffs, watch the English Premier League, which doesn’t have playoffs. As fun as Premier League Games can be, only 6 teams have won the league since 1992.

Exactly. I mean I've always felt the playoffs are where it matters in all sports. You play for a championship. Regular season is important for where you are seeded in that particular sports tournament as you put it. I don't understand people who seem to think that that means they should be in the final 4 or whatever. That's an argument I've gotten back like well if they are knocked out early the regular season doesn't matter and I was like huh? Regular season does not and should not get you anything in the playoffs except where you are seeded. I get the argument that you want the best teams in the conf finals or finals to have a great series, but if top teams are knocked out early, they didn't deserve to be there. Yes maybe that means you get a Ducks/Sens series of 07 or something but the Sens deserved to be there because they beat every team they had to play. Like Stephen A Smith saying he didn't want Loyola in the championship game because they weren't the best team. If they win all the games they need to win, they deserve to be there. And I want to watch sports to be excited and not knowing what could happen and that's the Stanley Cup playoffs for me. I mean Jamie talked about Nashville. Probably the last team to make the playoffs last year and they swept the first round and went to the Finals. That's awesome...unless your team got beat by them....

I am not sure in the EC but I believe the last time the 1 and 2 seeds met in the WC championship was 2010, not positive but I think that is true. It would probably happen more in the EC if the Caps could get past round 2!

Red Wings are 3-10 in OT. 5-1 in shootouts though. What are the Flyers?

2010 and 2011 the 1st and 2nd seeds met in the WCF, as well as 2007. Last time for the East? 2003.

First season in a long time without the playoffs. Officially need to pick a team to follow this Spring. Spoiler: It will probably be Boston.
