This just keeps getting better

If he chooses to retire at least he'll have won a cup.

TV ratings have been the same forever. none of the SCF ratings have improved during Olympic years. in fact, they have dropped from the previous years with the exception of 2006, when the previous year got a 0.0 rating :lol (lockout, no SCF played)

2014 was an Olympic year that featured the 2 largest media markets, LA and NYC, yet the ratings were significantly smaller than 2013's CHI/BOS finals.

2010 was an Olympic year that had CHI & PHI in the final. 2 pretty big markets, yet the ratings were virtually identical the 2009 numbers featuring PIT & DET.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stanle...vision_ratings

attendance has either held steady or slightly dipped during AND after every Olympic year.

https://www.statista.com/statistics/...ce-in-the-nhl/

and considering the Hartford Whalers are still one of the most popular sweaters purchased by fans, i'd say merch sales are about the same as well :lol

sure, some USA and Canada sweaters get sold during Olympic years, but that doesn't help the NHL whatsoever. that money goes directly to the IOC.

Yeah but TV ratings for sports in general have dropped. Look at ESPN. They're losing viewers by the hundreds of thousands.

they are probably bluffing. If Ovi goes to the olympics that provides cover for everyone.

I don't get it. you said the ratings have been the same forever but the two examples you cited ratings after the olympics stayed the same in one instance and changed for the worse in another. so the olympics basically hurt SCF ratings? I would rather have ratings for the part of the season after the olympics than ratings from one series of that olympic year.

I bet nobody from the NHL said the World Cup of hockey was good for the NHL though right? They'd never say that.

The best playoffs in all of sports starts next week yet we are arguing about the merits or problems with players attending the olympics? Lets focus on what is important, the STANLEY CUP PLAYOFFS!!!!!!!!!! :)

Lol ok well if you think the 2 weeks after the Olympics in the middle of February having slightly better ratings is going to help hockey then I can't help you.

And yes, the 2 examples I cited prove my point. Not sure what you don't get about it?

The Stanley cup is the NHL's premium product. Those are the ratings that count.

Same for attendance. Proves my point. The Olympics have zero impact on the NHL. They don't help the league in ANY WAY.

Ok fine but that doesn't really detract from my point.

What else helps the NHL besides TV ratings, merch sales and attendance?

Olympics doesn't impact any of those things, ipso facto the NHL made the right call.

Vecchione making his NHL debut tonight with former Union teammate Gostisbehere against other former Union teammate Keith Kincaid.

That had to have been one hell of a debut.

Just had a look at the highlights. Fun to see Duchene put something on the board in his final games in an Avs sweater. Fun to see EJ go end to end, even if it was a pretty soft goal. 22-54... Yay.

As cool as I think it is that the Avs put up 50 shots on the Blackhawks, scored two shorties, etc., I can't help but temper that with the fact that the Hawks knew they didn't need this win and were probably playing pretty conservatively the whole game.

it was a crazy game. makes up for the one in chicago when everything fell apart for the avs after the blown offsides call.

i wish they would keep duchene (and mackinnon). i'd rather them trade landeskog. duchene and mac make plays happen. matt has had a ton of bad luck with shots going off posts, etc, and it was really nice to see him have a great game, but at some point those shots are going to start going in for him. he can be a 30+ goal guy. he just needs guys around him to help out to make some scoring chances.

its been fun watching the young guys playing for the avs the last few weeks. lots of talented kids that can really make a difference with some experience under their belts. lots of hustle, constantly pestering opposing players. rantanen, compher, jost, and adrighetto could be a huge boost to this team if they can all click and live up to the expectations. i love the mackinnon-rantanen-adrighetto line.

Re: The NHL Thread (where home field advantage matters!)

Pens looked good last night. Geuntzel continues to impress.

I acutally am starting to think they are healthier than they are letting on. I fully expect Geno and Letang to play in the first round. I dont think that Rust and Cullen are really hurt, I just think they were being cautious.

Getting home ice over CBJ I actually think is a big advantage in that series.
