a lot of buzz here that the wings may try to grab Golubef if he hits waivers on his way back to springfield since he's a right handed shot and has looked fantastic in camp.

Interesting idea. I think they go in with the 7 D they have and see how it goes. The allure of grabbing a guy for nothing might be there, but if they are going to add a body I bet they try to get someone experienced.

You have to think RJ and his agent see this as additional leverage. Bleh.

It is always a blast....just know there will be highlights of them beating the Blackhawks and that is going to be really annoying to watch.

True.

The only thing that weirded me out about that rink was how "commercialized" it is. Is it common for rinks to have CPK and McDonald's and stuff now?

Sheesh. We were all excited when our ECHL team's stadium got a Dippin' Dots stand.

:lol

Seriously though, it felt weird and out of place. When I got to stadiums/rinks/etc., I imagine hot dogs/nachos/beer/etc. Not Big Mac's or chicken mcnuggets.

I dunno about rinks, but a lot of newer baseball stadiums have stuff like that.

United Center is awful as far as commercialization goes. There are Lexus symbols plastered all over every thing. Every stadium is like this.

Sorry, but what is CPK? I work for toys r us and in my world CPK stands for Cabbage Patch Kids. Surely they don't have a store at Staples Center....

I don't mind the advertising, I'm talking about the actual fan experience through vending, etc. I didn't get any, but eating McDonald's in your seat at a sporting event just seems like it would feel...off.

That said, now that I'm thinking about it...Kings fans...what's that Mexican restaurant right by Staples?

I dunno, lockman made a lot of good points

It's a interesting thought. Bettman's done a lot that has sucked, namely the lockouts. While there's a valid case that the lockouts were somewhat necessary, the answer can't be to lockout every time the CBA expires, which is what it's been under Bettman so far.

I agree 100% with the idea that not signing a TV deal with ESPN turned out to be a smart move. It may not have seemed so when games were on OLN, but now that it's flourished into what it's become, it looks really smart. NBC has the NHL all to themselves and can really showcase it, and they've basically built a channel (NBCSN) around it.

Basically everything post-rock bottom days of 2005 (except that pesky lockout) from Bettman has been solid from a business standpoint

Here's the thing...I think the position of pro sports commissioner is an easy scapegoat and easy person to hate. I mean, look at the commissioners we've had over the years. None of them are liked. Now is that just a coincidence and they are all douche bags, or is it just the position isn't one that fans naturally gravitate towards? Maybe it's that the position typically will draw in weasely douche businessmen that don't care about the integrity of sport? I don't know.

What I do know is this...as easy as it is to hate on Bettman, when you look at guys like Selig or Goodell...it could be a hell of a lot worse. Roger Goodell makes Gary Bettman look like Superman. Bettman has caused us all plenty of stomach ulcers, migraines, and pillow cases stained with our own tears, but he also has made some incredibly ballsy and well executed decisions that really helped the game of hockey grow.

Like I said, I have such a weird love/hate relationship with him. As a hockey purist that loves watching the NHL, I hate to see changes like the trapezoid and lockouts, but more than I hate those things, I love seeing new rinks pop up and seeing toddlers/teenagers/adults/whoever lace up for the first time and experience the REAL magic of hockey...stepping out on to a fresh sheet of ice and smelling that unmistakable combo of fresh ice and sweaty, moldy pads. Bettman has helped more people get into hockey than arguably anyone else on this planet. Rinks are popping up left and right. Chicago literally can't handle the capacity of hockey players it has now, and I know other cities are similar. It's easy to hate Bettman, and part of me always will for him taking away memories of mine and forcing the loss of portions of my favorite players careers through lockouts, but maybe it was a necessary evil to create some of these REALLY good things that have come from the lockouts.

I will be interested to see how Bettman handles the next CBA. The lost season was probably a necessary evil. They got a lot right with that one and fixed a lot of the issues now with this one. The problem was the lockout was pointless because the deal is pretty close to what people thought would happen. It should be easily avoidable the next time around.

Again, very well said. Whether the folks over in the baseball thread want to admit it or not, hockey really is the fastest growing game in this country, particularly over the last 6-7 years. That's why the most recent lockout was so disappointing, because it happened right when the sport was really gaining traction. But a big part of the recent success the league and the game in general has seen can be directly correlated to some of the decisions Bettman has made.

El Cholo is kiddie corner from the rink, there's a bar in the back of the restaurant. It's the only Mexican place I've been to before games down there. Rosa Mexicano is close by as well, according to Google, but I've never been.
