You can't be Titletown without having won the Stanley Cup. Or two cups. Or three cups. When the Kings have won as many as the Canadiens, then I'll consider it. They're going to have to, to make up for no NFL teams. :)

LA isn't titletown, amateurs.

Baseball hasn't won in forever, no football team, hockey has never won and Lakers have five. That's it.

:lol @ people thinking LA is titletown.

Ugh, so upset they didn't win last night because now I am going to have to wish for them to lose on Saturday since I won't be able to watch the game since I'll be at SPAC. And obviously me being able to watch them win is more important then them just winning it. :lol

:thumbsup agree on everything.

After living in Boston for several years and seeing a parade for every sport....it is not even close on the LA title town argument haha.

And yes, I will be at both nights at SPAC so I too would like LA to win it at home. However, I wouldn't mind the pleasure of watching the Devils fans have to see their team lose it at home.

People in this thread need both counting and history lessons.

Assuming the Kings win the Cup, they will be come the first city with titles in the 6 major sports

Pro Football (L.A. Raiders 1983)
Baseball (L.A. Dodgers 1959, 1963, 1965, 1981, 1988)
Pro Basketball (L.A. Lakers 1972, 1980, 1982, 1985, 1987, 1988, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2009, 2010)
Hockey (L.A. Kings 2012)
College Football (USC
College Basketball (UCLA 1964, 1965, 1967, 1968, 1969, 1970, 1971, 1972, 1973, 1975, 1995)
College Football (USC 1928, 1931, 1932, 1939, 1962, 1967, 1972, 1974, 1978, 2003, 2004*UCLA 1954)

Titletown baby!

Nope - they are in Anaheim - that's a different TV market.

Of course not - you know Anaheim is not Los Angeles. Los Angeles counting the Angels title (& future titles), despite having Los Angeles in their name, is like NYC counting the Devils titles, despite having 2 hockey teams - one in the city, and one on Long Island.

I might count the WNBA though.

Just kiddin'

:lol College sports are not major sports. There are only 4 major sports by almost everyone's standards.

Also, it has to be all the sports winning around the same time. Otherwise how is NY not #1 by a lot?

And if you are counting NCAA try adding in all of BU and BC's NCAA hockey championships too. Seems convenient to leave them out by your own logic. (if we are saying over any time period add in Northeastern, Harvard and UMass to the Hockey list as well).

Sorry man :(, I was expecting it to be over last night as well... perhaps the Kings were as well?

Some good hockey played on both sides, but kudos to the Devils for buckling down and getting it done. There was no real "better" team last night, the Devils were just able to capitalize on their chances (i.e. Henrique's goal, while a beauty, is one Quick can usually save) and make less mistakes. Their defense looked much better last night. After the first period, Tallinder did not look like he'd been off for the past five months.

I still don't see any way the Devils can win three more games in a row (sorry Ant). My original pick was Kings in 5, but I wouldn't mind seeing it go to 6 so they can win on home ice.

Has your beard reached Penner proportions? He definitely takes the cake this year. Even still, Weber had him beat after the first round. :lol

College basketball, and especially college football are much, much bigger sports than pro hockey. That's not a knock on pro hockey - hockey has awesome fans (I am a fringe hgockey fan, but I am sure most of you regulars are great fans).

I'd say when when looking at title town, one should look at amount of championships, and diversity of championships. If the Kings hold on, Los Angeles will become the first city to have titles in the 6 major sporting leagues in the U.S.

Boston has had a great run recently, no doubt about it. Fans there are very lucky. When comparing the cities championships in all areas though, it does not benefit Boston to count all college championships being that UCLA has won more major championships than any other school, and USC is 3rd behind UCLA & Stanford.

And just having fun with the titletown talk - like the Boston brethren had last year.

That's not true - but Boston has had a great run of luck lately. When was the last time one of their teams on the woman's water polo championship though?

Dude what are you on haha? College sports DO NOT count as major sports. There are only the BIG 4 when talking titletown.

Also, you can tell you live in the part of the country you do. College Basketball is only big in certain areas of the country, just as College hockey is bigger in certain areas. I promise you most people in the northeast don't care about College basketball other than for gambling reasons.

And yes, College football is huge and I am a fan myself, but it still does not count as a Major sport because it is not pro.

I hear ya with the having fun with it part, I am rooting the the Kings!

No logic when someone counts the NHL as a major sport; ratings for the last championship:

College football championship 14.0 rating
College basketball championship 9.7
Super Bowl 46.0
Stanley Cup Finals 2.3
World Series 11.3
NBA Finals 10.2
MLS Cup 0.8

College football about 6x more popular than NHL - not that there is anything wrong with that, but to say college football/basketball are not major sports, but nhl is, certainly doesn't add up

It has nothing to do with TV ratings and everything to do with the fact that those are college kids and the others are professional athletes.

Don't understand what TV ratings have to do with anything.

Watch any sports channel ever and listen to what they consider the major sports.

Also, really dumb to come into the NHL thread and call the NHL a non-major sport haha.

Also, World Cup finals 2010 ratings were 14.5...does that mean soccer is a major sport here?

Olympic hockey drew insane ratings too. Don't remember what it was, but I do remember it was something like 25 million viewers for the gold medal game.

The ratings for the hockey gold medal game had great ratings in Arizona. Should put two NHL teams down there.
