But yeah. His name is Jon Purves. I will be SUPER surprised if you know who he is. He played like six games for them in the early '90s. EDIT: Holy... he actually has a Wikipedia page. I'll have to let him know... I bet he has no idea. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Purves |

Re: The NHL Thread
I see your boy beat Glenn Healy on a deflection for his one career goal. Pretty legit.
Probably gonna have to get a John Purves Caps sweater now. Any idea on a number? I bet I'd be the only one in the world with one. Which would be so awesome. Also, probably gonna have to change it to OMGJP. Fata ain't got shit on "Never Nervous" Purves. |

So, who wants to buy me one of these? I'd prefer an L but will also take an XL.
Come on, you guys know I need one. The integrity of this thread is on the line here. |
Re: The NHL Thread
I love those jerseys. Both the red and the white ones.

Look at recent examples in other sports where a young player has been helped by a veteran. I will use the Yankees for a starting point because I know their history very well. In 1998 Joe Girardi knew damn well that Jorge Posada was eventually going to replace him yet he helped the kid on and off the field. Mariano Rivera takes kids from all over under his wing, he would help them hone their talent on the field and when off the field he'd show them the ropes by taking them out to dinner, bringing them to his house, taking those who were interested to an informal bible study, wan't even just his teammates either - when he could he'd help out players from other teams. Soccer - well one needs to look no further than the recent US Women's World Cup team - Abby Wambach KNEW that Alex Morgan was her heir apparent yet she was always their to help on and off the field. There are countless examples of this in soccer and much like the NHL many of these soccer teams have youth programs where there is a total disconnect from the 'real world' (focus being solely on playing at a high level) but the veterans show up to help these kids cope, even if it is only speaking to them about how they made the adjustment. The NFL sort of falls flat in that department IMO. Yeah, they have those money saving seminars which is a step in the right direction but that is a result of so many all time greats being flat broke 5 years after they retire, pretty sure OJ Simpson also showed teams that these kids need SOME form of discipline and self control. I am not a basketball fan (frankly it bores me to tears) but when I see some of these players on sports center they strike me as a bunch of spoiled, arrogant jackassas who act like the world owes them a favor. There is no perfect system for this and any system is dependent on whether the vets opt in but I think all sports can do a better job in helping kids adjust. There will always be exceptions - some players were raised with a sense of right and wrong and it shows, in addition you have superstars who were given all the help in the world by veterans who are great players on the field but jerks off it - Alex Rodriguez and Hope Solo spring to mind. Fame and fortune at a young age is not always a great thing so you will always have the idiots who are constantly in highlight reels for their on the field/ice actions but also in the gossip pages or handcuffs when off the field. Regardless of how effective it becomes ALL sports should be doing a better job mentoring these kids for life in the limelight and additionally life after retirement. No system is going to help every player but the fact that so many sports don't even try all that much to help these kids is a stain on sports in general. |

He wore #44 most of his career, but I think #37 with the Caps. We've got probably 3-4 different sweaters of his between my dad, bro, and me. But they're all Utah Grizzlies. Actually, I think pops might have one of his from when he played in Germany. Collectors item right there. OMGJP - I love this more than words can say. Seriously, a really good hockey player and an even better human being. Totally worthy of the title. Quote:

Re: The NHL Thread
Not much hockey news but just saw Isles and Zidlicky have been talking. I hope he gets a shot to play this year. Fit in very well with the Wings last year and if he was a bit younger, would have liked to see him back.

Re: The NHL Thread
Is it telling that Kane hasn't made a statement negating the accusations? Or is that not a common practice when accused of rape?
|
Re: The NHL Thread
pretty much common practice in any legal situation

He has good lawyers telling him not to talk. When he makes a statement it will be well thought out and prepared.

Girl didn't even want to go to Kane's house. If all this is true and he winds up avoiding jail (settlement always possible). I really hope he's off the Hawks sooner than later. |
