Boyd & Butch or Tim & Buddy

Which do you like better? The band with Boyd & Butch or the band with Tim & Buddy?

Re: Boyd & Butch or Tim & Buddy

Boyd is terrible and Butch sucked. Tim and Buddy are both really good. This is easy.

The early Butch years (00-04) were the peak of the band. Things got worse from there, and Buddy is actually quite good, but I'm voting Boyd and Butch off those first few tours alone.

I'll take Boyd and butch any day. I would lump rashawn in there with buddy, not tim.

Re: Boyd & Butch or Tim & Buddy

I like Buddy. He's been the best addition to the band since the (current) core 4. Tim is not bad by any stretch, it's just his placement in the mix is too high. But the last few tours that's been a little better.

That said, the band was originally centered around having a violin. It's what made their sound unique. The songs definitely miss it and from what I heard of either Buddy or Tim trying to cover the violin parts doesn't work.

Re: Boyd & Butch or Tim & Buddy

since Tim is my favorite out of this bunch, gotta go with that group.

Tim
Boyd
Buddy/Butch - basically a tossup.

Well let's see one of these two options was with the band when they were at their best and the other isn't

No question, and no brainer. Butch and Boyd all damn day.

Boyd was horrible. I don't understand how anyone can vote for him.

This is my thought exactly. If it were "violin and keys or electric guitar and keys," I get it, but Boyd? Nah. Plus I like Buddy a lot more than Butch.

Voted for Butch and Boyd for the simple fact that I originally fell in love with this band in the mid-90's for the sound and songs they produced. They don't necessarily need Boyd back but, damn, please give me the violin again!

The question posed was do you like the band with Boyd and Butch (98-08) or the band with Buddy and Tim (18-Present). I’ll take that 10 year iteration by a country mile over what they are currently doing.

B/c I'd rather have a sucky violin, than no violin at all. Songs sound too empty to me without Boyd's parts being played.

Boyd & Butch or Tim & Buddy

Only Boyd & Butch back when we had Roi for me. Otherwise give me Tim & Buddy.

Tim & Buddy hands down. Agreed Boyd was horrible.

Tim.....

Re: Boyd & Butch or Tim & Buddy

Never saw Butch live, but have come to appreciate him more in the last year or so via various Live Trax. I am not a fan of the organ sound at all (though sure Buddy is very talented). My choice is crazy easy: Boyd and Butch.

If the choice was rephrased as a random Live Trax from the Butch-Boyd era vs a random one from the Tim- Buddy era, I think a lot of these answers would be different.

This reads "do you prefer when the band is at their best or when they aren't as good" to me

Re: Boyd & Butch or Tim & Buddy

what if the question was: With a fantasy assumption that Boyd had turned a corner, could regularly play equal to his best years in the band, and he would be welcomed back, would you rather go forward from this point with Boyd & Butch or Buddy &Tim?

Re: Boyd & Butch or Tim & Buddy

The band was better before Butch IMO.

Boyd and Butch All Day!!

Re: Boyd & Butch or Tim & Buddy

Now reading the OP, the answer is clearly Boyd and Butch. Pretty much indisputably. the band from 98ish-2007 is objectively better than 2018-now.

But I voted based off talent/my preferences, I should have read closer.

I truly don't understand how someone can have this opinion and still be a huge fan of this band. Did y'all just cringe at most of the music they made prior to 2018?

I also don't understand how anyone can say Boyd was "horrible". He certainly wasn't without his flaws. Near the end he was pretty bad. But for the first 15 or so years of this band, which includes their best years, he was awesome.

Tim & Buddy. Band sounds fantastic with this lineup

Boyd and Butch. We all have preferences, but to say Boyd or Butch sucked? Nah. Boyd brought the iconic sound to the band, and high energy to the shows. Butch and Carter had amazing chemistry on stage, where they could pretty much read each others mind. Yes Boyd was slipping towards the end + bad personal stuff, but give me the Listener Supported album lineup any day!

This is where I'm at as well. I still can't fathom how they are touring without a violin, it's the most ridiculous decision this band has ever made. There are so many songs that just sound empty and hollow without the violin.
