Xbone has actual games. Ps4 just kinda wobbles
Yes, another gaming thread from me. But I think this will definitely interest a lot of people. A few different developers have now reported that Microsoft has sent new consoles to developers, so they can begin developing titles for the launch titles of a new platform.
When companies send developers a brand new platform, usually until the platform is in a final design, they just send the developers the guts of the console in a PC case. That's whats going on with Microsoft right now. EA has been given a few PC cases containing what appears to be the workings of a new console. To give a time-frame for reference, Nintendo, who we know is debuting a new console next year, has had their new testing rig with developers for a few months now. So if EA has had this test rig for a month as well, there may just be enough proof to begin speculating about a huge E3 surprise, with Microsoft announcing a new console for 2012. http://www.develop-online.net/news/3...on-desks-at-EA |
Re: Possible new Microsoft console in 2012?
Very cool :) Curious to see what the next gen Sony/MS/Nintendo consoles will hold.

Go Team Playstation!
Boo Team Microsoft! Indiference on Team Nintendo! /correct console fan-boy'ing. |
Re: Possible new Microsoft console in 2012?
Cool, another thing that will burn a huge hole in my wallet.
What sucks the most though is I just bought a new 360. |

I was a complete Sony fanboy as far as PS1 and PS2 go. Into the whole JRPG/Metal Gear/etc thing. But the 360 is an amazing console (well if you have a newer, non RRoD model, although my old one is still kciking), the XBL network is definitely better than PSN, and let's face it, the majority of big titles are released for both. And I don't care about Blu Ray. |
Re: Possible new Microsoft console in 2012?
This is dumb. These console cycles need to be longer between systems. I don't wanna have to start buying shit again. Good thing the world ends in December of 2012 amirite?

The point is: the hardware is just old. I can't make that point strongly enough. It's just a relatively ancient structure. Put it this way: my iPhone has as much RAM as these units. Developers are absolutely begging for the new consoles to have at least, no less, than 8GB of RAM (which is the amount you'd find in your average-to-low-end gaming PC). The current generation has 512MB. It's just not a competitive experience, and both consoles are losing a lot of people to PC. |
Re: Possible new Microsoft console in 2012?
This is the reason I never bought a 360. I love my old XBox, and by the time it got to where I wanted a 360, I figured fuck it, they'll come out with a new one in a year or two and I'll still be out of the loop.
Sega Genesis is where it's at anyway. |
Re: Possible new Microsoft console in 2012?
I hope they don't keep going with this kinect/move bullshit.

I'm glad a new gen is rolling in, everything I had been hearing is they wanted to stretch the current ones out for another 5 years or so

Re: Possible new Microsoft console in 2012?
Any word on the controller size???
lol I kid I just bought an Xbox not too long ago. I will probably stick with it for a while regardless of what they release in 2012. |

Nothing I said in the other thread was wrong, persay. The official line from MS/Sony was these consoles were looking for a 10-12 year lifespan. Since the 360 was released in 2005, a 10 year lifespan would see a new console in 2013/2014, as the lifespan usually goes for a bit into the next gen. And that may not have changed: they could very well announce a new console this E3, and say that it will be hands-on at E3 2012, for a 2013 release. |

Err, there was supposed to be an :lol after that first sentence. My phone hates me, and makes me seem even more super serious than I meant to be. :lol

It's not like they realistically compete with PC's, so as long as Microsoft and Sony were both planning on the long lifespan it would have been fine. Even the new Nintendo console still isn't going to be competition graphics wise, so there still isn't any real pressure on the companies |

But 3-4 years from now? The 360/PS3 hardware would be extremely outdated. (I realize this is just what you read, I'm not doubting that.) |

And again, there's a huge difference between lifespan and being the only console from a company. The PS2 was released in October 2000 in the US, and the PS3 was released November 2006. But the PS2's lifespan didn't end until last year, 2010. Games were still being released for the PS2, and it was still being supported by Sony. So the PS2 did in fact have a 10 year life-span, even though it had an older brother for the last 4 years. If Sony were to release a console in 2013, the PS3 would have the longest life of sole focus for a console ever, at 7 years. But it certainly wouldn't end the console; you would still see releases for it into 2015, and certainly possibly until after that. |

A better example will be Battlefield 3, which is being developed independently for PC and console. It's really not even a close comparison anymore. My 1200 dollar gaming rig will be able to run it at the highest settings, but probably won't get better than 60FPS. The 360 will end up being PC "fast" settings, sacrificing a lot of quality for performance. |

Re: Possible new Microsoft console in 2012?
Complete rumor, but this may currently be Codenamed "Loop".
http://kotaku.com/5857315/next-xbox-...fied-windows-9 Don't get scared about the "modified Windows 9" thing, which makes it seem like we won't see this until 2015. First, it may be a typo and they meant 8. Second, every Windows platform is based on a kernel from a Windows OS. The current 360 dashboard is still running on an XP kernel, from what I know. All that's saying is that the kernel is going to be different. But the additional cores sound tasty, if true. |

Re: Possible new Microsoft console in 2012?
Ubisoft is focusing its premiere studios solely on XB3 development, and they already have test-rigs in studio. They expect to get the final test-kits this winter, and still project a 2012 launch. So I'm now going to go on record, that at some time in the next 8 to 32 months, we'll have a new Microsoft console. :lol
The article also talks about the PS4, but it looks like Sony may again be a year behind in launch. http://www.next-gen.biz/news/next-ge...on-arrive-2012 |
Re: Possible new Microsoft console in 2012?
Fuck this, I just bought a new 360. No wonder there have been awesome deals lately.
|
Re: Possible new Microsoft console in 2012?
It may be sooner than even I thought. I hadn't finished that article when I posted the link, but a number in the industry think that the XB3 will be announced at CES in January, and fully running on-floor at E3. I was expecting something more similar to the 360, with Microsoft doing their own "launch event" pretty close to E3, and having units running the games at E3, but not the actual unit (remember, there were no 360s on the floor of E3 2005, there were Macs running 360 games).
I'm pumped. I just spent a thousand dollars on a gaming PC, but what I see is, if a new console comes out next year, I'll buy it, and not have to upgrade my PC until maybe spring 2014 at the earliest. |
