Which is why they are doing it this way. 10-15 years ago, while they didn't play defense, at least there was some effort. The last few years it's been like a step or two above a morning skate. The game is useless but it is also where they (NHL) make a lot of money, so sadly it won't go anywhere. I'm ok with this to make the game actually exciting. The monetary aspect of it might get the guys to play a little harder too.

no one is going to be "playing hard" during the ASG

i appreciate the sentiment of the new format but it just does nothing for me

nothing wrong with being excited about it though. i'm sure the NHL is thrilled with the buzz but i'd rather shovel snow than watch a 3-on-3 OT, let alone 3 20 minute all star games :lol

Sad to hear for Isles fans. Hamonic is one of my favorite young d-men. Sounds like both sides are handling it admirably - NYI trying to fulfill the request and Hamonic willing to be patient. Hope everything works out with his family stuff.

Depends on what you mean by "for real".

I don't know if they're a Cup contender or not, but maybe more like the West's version of the Washington Capitals.

Still just not sold the Caps have it figured out yet. Still too much inconsistency. The bad starts lately have been exhausting and while they've shown they can come back, they haven't seemed like they've been in control of a game for a couple weeks. There's flashes of great and some unlucky stuff happening against them, but overall a lot of sloppiness and very little detail in their game right now. It's early in the season still and there's ups and downs of course. I just feel like when they win it's always very lucky. Ever since that Canadian road trip that they killed it on. Ever since they came back from that it's been very inconsistent hockey basically throughout the entire lineup. Not ideal.

I don't get this team at all. Granted I haven't been able to catch as many games as I would have liked but still follow the games nightly. They can't score for shit. They have the worst goal differential in the league. Is it Hakstol being new that is hurting them or underperforming players or both?

~Crashintome89~ 11-22-2015 03:21 PM

Re: The NHL Thread

I'm not sure what it is, but I'm more inclined to blame the players than Hakstol. Face it, Hakstol has molded players like Toews and Backes into very, very good two-way players. Both of them are hard-nosed players. Granted, he did it with them in college and the NHL is completely different ball game--but we've been crapping on these players for three years now and nothing has changed.

First game of the season for me on Wednesday. Wings offense slowly getting going so that's good and I would like revenge on the Bruins for the game a few weeks ago. Bruins also claim Landon Ferraro off waivers from DET. Sadly he had to be the guy to go but Anderson (who would have been the other candidate) gives you a PK options which Ferraro just didn't. The reality of todays game but good for Landon and I hope he gets a shot there. Maybe I'll see him on the ice Wednesday.

It seems like they're trying WAY too hard. The Winter Classic sweaters are clearly a "heritage/vintage" type, and they didn't seem to want to go that route. It seems like they're using the Stadium Series to be more "modern", I guess?

Not sure what meeting that was that the NHL decided that, but they're awful.

I mean, I get it. You want to be able to market a specialty sweater, but want to keep the Stadium Series separate from the WC...hence no vintage sweaters. It makes sense, it just seems like the NHL is constantly trying too hard with these.

Was swinging bye to post this. How awesome was that piece. Love me some Trotts.

I really hate the Habs. They just have our number. I knew we were gonna lose both games. They just own us. We'll be alright.

Catching up, I figured you guys (and gal) brought up the Hamonic stuff. I am so torn by it all. He has been a favorite of mine since he came up and cemented his favorite status they way he played vs. the Pens in that playoffs series a few years ago. I don't know what the family issue is but it is obviously very important to him. Unless he gets traded to the Jets, I just don't know how much time he can spend "home". He will still be on the road a ton. It breaks my heart that we will lose him eventually. I know he will play his butt off like has every game until a deal is done. I hope it is not a distraction in the room. I know it most likely isn't but how can it not be in the back of guys' minds. Shitty situation, for sure.

Smart move in terms of fantasy, not totally his fault last night though. Watching it there, didn't want to watch the replay when I got home, he probably should have had the tying goal. BUT his team needs to find a way to score with over 30 shots on net. One goal on a late PP that they had, would have ended it. Still, trying to stay positive that they've looked a lot better recently.

I don't know what y'all are talking about. Me and my wife smash with regularity. Some of the best sex we've ever had has happened since we've been married.

Re: The NHL Thread

Careful, guys... I'm about to go on another Player Safety rant.

So, Matt Beleskey of the Bruins delivers one of those three-feet-from-the-boards hits on Derek Stepan that I've complained about a million times before and that I consider to be the most dangerous type of hit in hockey. McIlrath takes exception, fights Beleskey. End result is Boston actually GOES ON A PP after Beleskey isn't even penalized for the hit and McIlrath gets an Instigator penalty.

Here's the whole sequence, with the best angle of the hit showing at around the 30 second mark: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i6qez_zGB7U

(And don't even get me started on the ludicrous spoutings of Pierre Maguire during the replay)

The NHL preaches player safety, yet they allow these types of hits to go unpunished. The justification is that Stepan was not seriously injured and was able to stay in the game. Again, INJURY is the determining factor in discipline. All this is suggesting to players that it's OK to hit a guy three feet from the boards... AS LONG AS HE DOESN'T GET HURT. Nevermind that IF he gets hurt on a hit like that, he could break his neck, cause permanent spinal injury, etc. "But hey, he got up and skated away, so no harm done."

It infuriates me. If the league wanted to cut down on these, at least give Beleskey a major penalty for boarding (which is within bounds of NHL rules) and put his team down a man for 5 minutes. No NHL player wants to put his team in that position, and I'd be willing to bet he'd think twice before doing it again.

I love hockey, you all know that, and I try to stay fairly positive when talking about the game, but I see these guys going into the boards like that and I'm just waiting for that terrible moment when one doesn't get up. It's going to be terrible. And these types of hits are TOTALLY avoidable. There's no reason an NHL caliber player should feel the necessity to check a player that far away from the boards in that manner.

Rant over. Sorry guys, just had to get it out somewhere.

Also, congrats to all the dads in here still getting it from their ladies on the reg.

I thought I heard Stepan had broken ribs. Maybe I'm wrong.

Anyways, Isles lost in the Shootout. 9 straight goals to start the shootout. I didn't hear anything on it but that has to be close to the record or something. At least near it.

We've indeed been over this, but it can't be stressed enough how correct you are. Additionally, in this instance, not only is the hit dangerous, it's also VERY late. At the very least, this should've been interference. But I agree. It's ludicrous this seems like a non issue to the league. And these players know exactly what they're doing. You'd think they'd have at least a little bit of respect for their fellow players and not do something dangerous. But sadly we see stuff like this all the time. It's a shame.

Also, just researched a bit, Stepan broke multiple ribs as a result of this. Out indefinitely. So there goes the no injury thing.

Thanks guys, my bad for not doing due diligence. I was just glad when I saw him get up.

:thumbsup My brother and I were talking about how strict they are on goalie interference calls and how if you barely tap a goalie you're going to the box, yet you can board guys right and left with ease.

Yeah the NHL is great at times with adjusting to the times but in others you are like "huh?"

In happy news, glad my Wings found a way to get the extra point last night. Again outplay their opponent, but can't find a way to pull away. Should have beat Boston and Edmonton in regulation. The oilers it doesn't matter going to OT but they could be up 3 on the Bruins but instead they are tied in points.

The fact that injuries define suspensions is the most asinine thing the NHL does.

Also, I really wish we'd see more major penalties. It really seems the league is afraid to call those.

I might be in the minority here, but I don't think the hit is suspend-able.

Re: The NHL Thread

It's INCREDIBLY late, and at a very dangerous distance from the boards. At the least, it's a 5 minute boarding major.

Watch me play NHL 14. I get ejected all the time for boarding. It's fun.
