Tampa is by far the favorite to win at 24%.

Unfortunately no one has found a good correlation for hockey projections - too many variables that aren't yet fully quantified

Well the Presidents trophy winner wins the cup about 30% of the times so it's close.

I assume numberfire has done some backtesting.

Not sure what this has to do with hockey not having (publicized) correlated advanced stats

I’d be surprised if any of those 5 teams win the Cup.

But then again, I’m about to link an article that talks about the Caps winning the Cup. Which I never thought they would. So who knows.

Oh, that article. Braden <3

How on god’s green earth has Kenny Albert made it so long in the play by play game? Ugh I’ll either be banging my head on the wall or watching on mute for the next three hours. Great.

So, are we at nine team race in the east now officially? Or does Philly still have a legit chance? Good try last night, by the way

Chirps aside, I unfortunately just don’t see how the Flyers are gonna make it. I think it’s too much distance at this point. 7 points back with another team in the way is a big task with 15 games left.

At this point I would say it's a 9 team race. Flyers have 15 games left - 8 of which are against teams with better records. So it helps but they will be tough games with everyone ahead of them still jockeying for position

As a former Whalers fan it is very cool to see those jersey's back on the ice again. Annoying to see the "Whalers" lose to the darn Bruins AGAIN. Not surprised at all that Carolina has sold out of mens (and almost sold out of womens) Whalers jerseys, They likely should have made more - that said at the NHL.com prices you'd have to be dumb to pay the sticker price when you can go on eBay and get an 'new' (in some cases fake but well made) CCM or Reebok version for less than half the price. It always makes me laugh when I walk into Bradley airport and see just how much Whalers merchandise they have to sell.

Huge 2 games for CBJ - if they can win both in regulation they turn the tables completely and get there season back on track after all the deadline moves - if they lose both, not a good sign

Well, after tonight the best they can hope for a split in the home and away (back to back) against the Pens if CBJ wins on Saturday!

So this breakaway was blown dead by the linesmen as offsides, resulting in the player not attempting a shot.

https://twitter.com/lakings/status/1...851522049?s=21

Not that it mattered in the particular game because lol Kings, but how does something like this be prevented in the future?

A challenge by the coach, resulting in a penalty type shot?
The linesmen not blowing down “close calls” on breakaways, allow the shooter to shoot, then let it go to video review?
Nothing, because it’s just the name of the game and stuff happens?

Offsides isn't a judgement call, so I'd say you're #1 option is fair.

Swallowing whistles should never be promoted.

I've noticed this year refs are much quicker on the whistle than years past for off sides. With video replay I think they should air more on the side of let them play because of video replay

As for this situation you just have to let it go - so many more missed calls that have bigger impact

Re: The NHL Thread: featuring Gritty, the regular season mascot champ.

Oilers have Draisaitl in the goal scoring title mix, McDavid in the top 3 in points, Nugent-Hopkins with his most career points in a season already, decent record in the last few games, playing with some cohesion and grit, probably going to win a bunch more games on their way to missing the playoffs.
future future grumble grumble.

Wow, so last night I saw this commercial with Patrick Sharp and Adam Burrish (a 'tribute' of sorts to silly old insurance commercial from the 1980's - https://twitter.com/NHLBlackhawks/st...990593/video/1) and thought it was the worst hockey commercial of the year until I just saw this. Kings fans (hi Sarah) what on earth were they thinking, this was truly dreadful! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SutbRQEuVDo

numbefire gives those 5 team about a 50% chance of one of them winning…could easily see the Caps, Pens and Vegas making a run.

What’s really wild about Kenny Albert (who is without doubt my least favorite play by play person of all the guys who have made it to the national stage) is that if you go waaaaay back to the start of his career, Albert’s first job with a major pro sports team was with the Washington Capitals and Home Team Sports (or as we all remember it: HTS). Yes, my man originally was a Caps guy. His replacement on HTS has become quite the familiar face for Caps fans. After 24 years, Joe Beninati is still the only person who’s been the TV voice for the Caps since Kenny Albert left.

I don’t know anything really about numberfire or any of the other stuff you’re talking about. I just know what I see.

Tampa - yeah, maybe. This could be their year. But they’ve had a recent history of coming up short regularly. They’ll have to get past that.

Toronto - nope. No defense. They’ll get shut down in the playoffs when goals are five times harder to accumulate.

Bruins - maybe. Obviously an 18 game point streak is impressive. They also play a hard game. That translates well in the playoffs usually. Of the five teams I’m mentioning, I actually think they’ve got the best shot to go deep.

Cal-Gary - lots of inexperience there. I just don’t see it happening.. This is the one I’d like to be wrong about as western Canadian hockey is always welcome in my opinion. Unless it’s Vancouver.

San Jose - goalie questions. Karlsson hasn’t been a model of consistency. Plus it’s the sharks, the perrenial bridesmaid.

Honestly, the thing about hockey is none of us know or can predict what will happen. It’s such a random game that requires a lot of luck in the right spots to actually have a long run. No computer model or internet analysis can predict that type of stuff.

It’s a slippery slope to start promoting the swallowing of whistles, so I have to agree. If the linesman sees it as offside, he’s gotta call it as such. Even if we learn he wasn’t right. He shouldn’t be discouraged from making a call because it’s close.

I was at the game with my Dad. Great crowd last night, I actually had to quickly go online and buy from Vivid seats just to get in the door because the Box Office sold out. (I got really awesome seats for like $200 though!).

Also, the line to get a Bunch of Jerks shirt was awesome :lol. I got a hat and shirt because they are awesome.

Too bad the Canes got lit up last night. The Jets looked like a team on fire ready for the playoffs. I was pissed that Carolina didn't call a timeout after the third goal. You give up 3 goals on 8 shots in the first 10 minutes....how do you not call a timeout to calm your team down or make a goalie change? I get maybe you don't want to change goalies since you play Nashville a night later, but at least call the timeout.

Anyway, I am not really invested and I had a very nice conversation with a girl from Manitoba last night, so I still had fun!
