Sorry to hear that he's hanging it up. Given the "No Goal" and whatnot from the '99 Finals, as a Sabres fan, I don't like the Stars, but I always liked him. The rare American player that shone in the era when European players first broke really big. Never met him, but did meet Joe Neuwendyk (another good American player of the time) the summer after Dallas won the Cup (saw the Cup in person, too), when he visited Ithaca (he played for Cornell and still has a house in Ithaca). Talk about your conflicted emotions.

Greatest American player ever!

I've seen this alot and I definitely think he is top 5 but I think Chelios and Leetch were better and I also think LaFontaine was better. If LaFontaine doesn't get the injuries, his career is better and for a time he was better than Modano ever was. I would put Modano 4th..with Roenick 5th.

That said, I certainly can't criticize you saying that. There is not a lot of separation at the very top.

I get what your saying but I don't really play the "if" game. I agree that Pat could have had the greatest career for an American but he didn't, which is a shame. I put Mo ahead of Chelios and Leetch because he scored points, alot of them.

Mo, Chely, Leetch, Pat, Roenick

Having the wrist injury happen last year I wish he would have hung em last summer. He was just starting to fit in when he got his injury and then it was one. He could have been a nice addition to this team but it didn't work out.

You said player, though, not greatest career or most points. Did Modano have a better career..maybe. I'm an Islander fan and had season tix when Pat was in his prime with us so maybe I'm biased but I don't think so. He was that good.

Modano broke 38 goals once and never bested 93 points. Pat had 8 seasons of 38 or more goals. Points per game is not even close.

Chelios sucks. Brian Leetch was infinitely the better defenseman.

you clearly are only recalling the later red wing years...or when he was a 40 something year old 3rd pair dman. Not perennial norris contender as a Hab and Hawk.

It has nothing to do with that a lot of people in here just don't like him. He by far didn't suck. His first few years as a Wing were good. He drive Kariya nuts in 99 and him and Bertuzzi and him and Forsberg had some great battles in 02. Personally you can't compare him and Leetch. Two different types of defensemen.

Re: NHL 2011/2012 Thread

I respect Chelios for the player he was: a smart defenseman with good instincts who, in his prime, played all three zones expertly. You don't play into your mid-40s just by sheer luck or skill. You have to have the instincts that allow you to be positionally sound to compensate for your older legs. Chelios had all of that.

That being said, I hate him. His incessant whinyness in his later years really spoiled his legacy, at least in my eyes. But is he Hall of Fame? Without a doubt.

So is Leetch, but I agree with Tim, comparing the two on such a high level as "who was better" or even "who is the better defenseman" is not very productive. Leetch was an extremely gifted offensive defenseman who could run a powerplay beautifully. His first pass was always a good one (as was his second, third, fourth...). While he did get better defensively with age, he was never as effective in his own end. In terms of all-around game, the nod goes to Chelios. In terms of pure, god-given talent, Leetch may hold a slight edge. But of course, talent isn't everything, and I don't know if Leetch played with the same intensity and grit as Chelios night in and out.

Again, tough to say.

Re: NHL 2011/2012 Thread

Man, Chelios was just as whiny in the chicago years. I remember hating him. He definitely was one of those guys who you hated unless he was on your team. One game vs. the isles, he got an instigator fighting major and back then, you got thrown out for an instigator and it him going after one of our smaller players cause he got under his skin. I was so happy.

I agree, 2 totally different games. Chelios had a ton of points in 1st half of his career. And being an Isles fan and a hockey fan, you don't have to tell me how special Leetch was, though not as great defensively, as the +/+ shows, though Chelios was on better teams. Hated him and Richter for that matter, although after the 96 world cup, I came to hate them less.

Makes for a good debate. They are definitely the all US 1st pair dman.

San Fancisco is getting an ECHL team called the Bulls, that will play at the Cow Palace. We'll see if this works better than the Spiders did.

Alright. I'm moving it. I don't even know if I'll be available Sunday. Let's do it Monday at 8pm EST.

Re: NHL 2011/2012 Thread

Also. I added a second IR spot, since drafting players with this many teams will be tough as it, and we need to hold onto our players. I may even go to three.

And for goalies stats to count there has to be only 2 games played per week.
