Everyone does. It's part of the business now. Say you'll take a hometown discount to the public and then fight for your money behind closed doors. I was saying it for weeks, that's very "PR".

Everything in sports is so PR now, you have to take literally everything athletes say with a grain of salt. It's all rehearsed and been ingrained in their heads to say the most PR thing possible.

Ok yeah I didn't see the report from McKenzie. Even then I would have probably done that deal.

That said, I have a lot less problem with this now that we got Dano. Compare Dano's numbers last year with Saad's in 2013. Yeah, they are basically identical. We will have Dano & TT both playing for less than $1m this season. I am more OK with this now.

All I know about him:

@JayZawaski670: Make no mistake...Dano is the key player to the Hawks in this deal. Yes, Anisimov is the name you know. Dano could be a stud.

@travisyost: Marko Dano's 19/20 year old season (35 games): 19 PTS, 56% of the scoring chances, 54% of the Corsis on a middling team.

At the end of the day the Hawks just won a Cup....for the third time in 6 years...so seems silly to be getting angry (working to convince myself not to be angry/Bickell signing probably ruined this).

Re: The NHL Thread

I mean time will tell what Saad will be away from the Blackhawks. Up until this point Bowman had been very good about keeping the core guys, and figuring everything else out around it. I thought of Saad as being a key part of the core going forward, so that stings a little bit.

I also find the inclusion of Morin to be rather odd. I think he's a solid player, but Quenneville hates him. He probably hates that he's back in Chicago.

Re: The NHL Thread

Bowman May 24th: "He's emerged as a guy coaches trust, so I would think he's going to play an even bigger role next year," Bowman told the Tribune. "He's ready for that. He'll be 23 and he'll have a couple of years of solid NHL experience under his belt. He's ready for taking that next step to being a featured guy. "We'll get him signed."

Saad on June 17: "The money’s going to come and go. To win championships and play on a great team, that’s what it’s all about."

Re: The NHL Thread

I'm more shocked that someone thought Bieksa was worth a 2nd than the fact that Saad got traded after seeing what Saad wanted.

$6.5 for Saad? No way man. Patches doesn't get that and he has 2 35+ goal seasons. Saad doesn't have a 30 goal season and he got to skate with Toews and Kane. Toews and Kane also didn't even get $6.5 off their entry level deals...but Saad should? Maybe, but not from the Hawks. Good move by Stan, and I highly doubt they're done. Sucks, but needed to be done.

The mistakes were made 2 years ago when you signed Rosie to a 2-year deal and Bickell. Now you're out a Leddy and a Saad

I think he'd been looking to get paid from the start. If he wasn't, it would have been a quick bridge deal like we all expected. His agent isn't stupid, and neither is Saad.

$6.5m AAV is absurd. $4ish for 2-3 years is more like it. I mean, look what Ryan Johansen held out for last offseason. I'm really curious to see what Columbus pays him.

Losing Paliotta really hurts, though. I feel so bad for him, he could have signed anywhere and wanted to develop in the Blackhawks system.

Marko Dano will be a nice piece, interested to see how he grows. Not sure where Anisimov fits.

Yeah saw that just after it was posted. Why do places like this post it if the NHL is denying it so much? Page hits? I figured it wasn't true, or at least no way they announce that now, but amazing a place posts it with the top of the NHL people and Coyotes saying no. Of course, NHL would deny it if it was true but I don't see why you post that story now when you know they wouldn't come close to announcing it for months if it were true.

You're missing the point.

We can then see exactly where the market for Saad was, and what he exactly was willing to sign for from these teams supposedly knocking at his door.

The fire that's going to come from Chicago fans if it's anywhere around $5m AAV will be ridiculous.

Yeah, he's been in the rumor mill for a little bit, but I just don't see it. Bad faceoff guy, constantly underperforming.

People always say "put him with Kane and watch how good he'll be." Yet, history tells us that's not true. Centers usually struggle with Kane for quite some time. Look no further than last year with Richards and Vermette. It took Richards almost 6-7 months to really get used to playing with Kane, and Vermette never looked good with him.

He'll get some term that I don't think the Caps would want to do. I always like when someone gets bought out so many people say "with that buyout, he'll take less money to go somewhere." And yet that's almost never true, cause we forget this is the NHL. I mean everyone thought Vinny would do that when TBL bought him out and....well Flyers fans know. THANKFULLY Wings won't do it. With all the RFA's and if Franzen comes back, they have 14 fowards so...thank god.

Caps need a top 6 RWer, which Semin can be. There's a lot of familiarity there too obviously. True about the term, BMac isn't stupid it seems and I doubt he'd throw a long contract at Semin, but I could absolutely see them offering a "bridge" deal if we can call it that this late in his career. Whether or not Semin takes it, I don't know, I guess it depends on what else he is offered. Problem with a guy like Semin is it's no secret what he's about. Unlike with Vinny who had shown elite qualities earlier in his career, that's never happened with Semin. In fact exactly the opposite. So I think teams will be very hesitant to offer him a lot of term.

Despite the 2 cups in 3 full seasons people won't remember him as a Blackhawk. He's going to play a majority of his career elsewhere. Not that he can't wear it but it will suck. It really felt like he was going to be here a long time, and there wasn't any way Bowman would let him leave.

please tell me I'm wrong in anything I say here:

Everyone is so worried about offer sheets, or at least the threat of it--but don't offer sheets not mean anything if the player doesn't sign them? The player has to sign the offer sheet. If he doesn't, the offer sheet doesn't matter.

So in the case, let's just say there is better communication between Bowman, Saad, and Saad's agent. Let's just say Bowman goes to the two of them and says, "listen, we don't have the money to do a long-term deal with you right now. If you want to stay in Chicago, please work with us. Take a bridge deal. Give us two years to straighten out the our cap mess, and then you'll get paid. It's a win-win for each of us, and we'll win so many stanley cups."

Yeah same thing goes for Tarasenko. Blues have the space for it too. Hawks getting hijacked because teams knew it would be tough to match.

What in the hell is Stan doing. OK, I like Anisimov, but 5 yrs for a 2nd/3rd line tweener with a history of concussion issues? Yuck.

I was surprised by this. I've seen what Anisimov can do when he's on, but still.

Guys are gettin' PAID this summer.

Anyone think that is not the best idea for the Pens? Even with Leafs eating $2mil they would have 37.5mil or so for 87, 58, 71, Kessel and Flower.

Maybe 71 or 58 would go back in the deal?

I wouldn't move 71 to a team in my own conference but that's me.

You got your guy.

@NHLFlyers have signed goalie Michal Neuvirth to two-year deal, $1.5 M in Year 1 and $1.75 million in Year 2 @Real_ESPNLeBrun

Re: The NHL Thread

I actually like the Avs signing Comeau. Needed just a little more presence in our bottom six, and he'll provide that. 30 (16 goals) points last year ain't bad for the role he'll be asked to play.

Still befuddled by Beauchemin though.

Custance isn't a Detroit guy is he? Points out Detroit had no interest in Semin (thank god) and saying Detroit still very much in on Mike Green.

Annnnndd Phil to the Pens. This is very interesting. I think Kessel will be a better fit in Pit than in TO but wow do they have a lot tied up in 5 players.

I'm interested to hear what the draft pick was, and if there's salary retention.

TMoore4075 07-01-2015 10:01 AM

Re: The NHL Thread

Kessel had to go. You couldn't hold onto that type of salary when you are gonna suck for years. Blow...it...up.

With salary retention. If thats all this is a steal

TMoore4075 07-01-2015 10:07 AM

Re: The NHL Thread

Better be a first if your TO. Now don't get me wrong, getting rid of the salary is a big thing for them, and we don't know what the market was, but you gotta get assets if you're TO.
