Sometimes fans of one team see a rivalry where the other side doesn't. Hawks fans used to think Detroit and Chicago was still a huge rivalry pre-2009, while Wings fans were like "where did the Hawks finish last year? Oh 50 points behind the Wings? Oh ok."

fonzz41 12-19-2014 08:37 AM

Re: The NHL Thread

Well, according to NBC Sports, if two teams have ever even taken a penalty against one another they qualify as a rivalry.

Nah, we saved you time and won it in regulation. Hope Howard is ok. He is my #1 G in fantasy.

Dats and Zetterberg are still amazing with the puck. They still gots the skillz. It's amazing we kept them off the scoresheet.

Big win!!

Then again. It was expected as we have now won 5 straight in Detroit.

Clearly he saw my moves on my penalty shot attempt last week. It was a decent attempt to copy me, I guess. Maybe with more practice he'll get it right next time.

Re: The NHL Thread

So just a brief moment here to talk about the Hawks assistant equipment manager, Clint. I only had brief interactions with him a couple times at Johnny's Ice House, but from guys that worked there that I talked to, he was a really great guy.

For those that don't know, he shockingly passed away last night. The organization isn't releasing details as to how, but it definitely caught everyone by surprise. He was with the team in Columbus and on the plane back to Chicago with them after that game.

Here's a little clip on Clint that was on the news in Indiana:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4gT2Z_OpAY0

Here's a picture of him with the Cup after the 2013 win:

https://twitter.com/keeperofthecup/s...19530086817792

And yes, those are his 4 kids and his wife.

If you guys have the chance, check out some of the highlights from tonight. The UC held a moment of silence for him that was hauntingly quiet. Like all hockey families, the Hawks are an extremely tight knit group, and you could see it in their faces during the pre and post game interviews (especially Q) that this hit them really hard. I can't imagine going out and playing a game after someone you were close to had just died. WGN showed the head equipment manager as the game had just ended, and he was already crying.

Tough, tough day for those guys, for sure. Just goes to show you how hockey really just brings people together.

I don't find it too amazing at all actually. Columbus really lost a lot of ground back when they had to basically ice their AHL squad when everyone was injured, and now the Metro's actually trending up for a change. I'm not sure, but I'm gonna assume you mean the average teams are the Flyers, Caps and Isles and the vast underachiever is the Rangers. First, the Islanders have been on point all season so to call them very average is an understatement in my opinion. Second, over that same 10 game span, the Rangers have gone 8-2-0 and the Capitals have gone 7-1-2. So the Rangers are finally starting to play like everybody thought they would and the Caps have had a fantastic December and haven't been playing average hockey at all. The Flyers, well I got nothing, Columbus will probably pass them soon.

All that said I'm really looking forward to tonight's NYR/Caps game. Should be a great test for both teams and they've both been very good these past couple weeks.

Dude, my automated draft for the fantasy league gave me Holtby and I can't tell you how many times I've come thiiiissss close to dropping him. For some reason I've kept him on, and my (I'll call it) patience has paid off the last couple weeks. He's been pretty solid :thumbsup A bright spot on my otherwise bad team.

The NHL flooded the market with all these outdoor games. I didn't watch the winter classic last year, and I won't this year. I will enjoy watching the ratings plummet due to their greed.

I do enjoy watching the outdoor games. But I do agree also that the number of them has probably partially contributed to me not being quite as excited for the Winter Classic as I used to be when it was the one outdoor game.

It would be like having Christmas four times a year. Sure I would probably still enjoy it each time, but it wouldn't have quite the build-up of excitement over the course of the year.

Obviously I watched it last year, but even with not being a fan of the Wings or Leafs I think I still would have just because it's a historical rivalary and it was at a huge ass football stadium.

I do agree they overdid it last year, I think most of us said that last year. I only watched the Winter Classic I think. I saw parts of the NYC games but those were just eh to me and I watched parts of the Heritage cause I wanted to see all the media around Lou not starting, but didn't watch much of it. I don't think I watched a minute of the chicago game either. Make it once a year for the WC and then every other year maybe do the Heritage.

Eh, I hope the ratings don't plummet. It goes hand-in-hand with the salary cap, and I want the cap to keep climbing.

I like the sport getting national attention and gaining momentum, so I'm never rooting for it to fail.

Unless you have a rooting interest I don't see how anyone would care really. There are many reasons. Pretty disappointing considering I'm obviously thrilled the Caps got it in DC. But considering there's been zero build up, the NHL over saturated the outdoor game market recently, the Hawks/Caps isn't a rivalry in any way, and the accompanying TV special is on Epix :lol (though episode 1 was good), I don't think anyone who says they don't care is out of line

Holy hell a win, and a lot of goals. Scroed as many last night as the last 6 games combined I think. Sure it was like the 2nd worst team in the league, but I'll take anything. Hell if it was the sad excuse for a POS Oilers team, I'd have taken that too.

Sounds awesome. Nice that the Lightning were hosting a good team so you got to see that. Always wanted to go to that arena. Was actulaly down there once when the Wings were, didn't know that when I planned the trip, but the game was sold out. It was when the Wings had Hull, Hasek and everyone else so not a surprise.

Fucking cbj. Shooting off m80s after a goal. I guess I have to mute my tv when they score. Thank god they don't blow teams out or their fans would be very deaf.

Lucic just kicked prouts ass

Wtf. The puck went out of play, hit the netting, and came back into play cbj scored and they allowed it. How does that happen? How is that allowed?

In the offseason the NHL said they were going to do away with that in the offseason. Didn't lead directly to a goal, but it should've been called dead

Saturday night would have been alright but getting out of The Joe sucks big ass so afternoon is much better.

Hockey game related, need to watch Nyquist's OT winner tonight. I think they said he controlled the puck for 28 seconds. Was impressive to watch. And hey...no shootout.

Really disappointing to see Landeskog with the cheap shot on Kane after his EN.

NHL's hottest team keeps it going with a win over the Devils!! Sephan with the hat-trick and Hank with a win in his 600th game! Longest winning streak in 40 years for NYR!!

Unbelievable game from the Caps tonight. Totally dominated the Penguins.

timmy, that Nyquist goal was unreal. Forsbergian to say the least.

It kind of crushes my soul to see Filip Forsberg having so much success. I mean I like the kid a lot and I'm glad he's doing well, and lord knows I love the Predators, but damn you, George McPhee. Damn you.

Thanks to the Leafs for blowing a 2 goal lead yesterday.

So for Wings game in March I can be in the corner or be about the faceoff dot but be 4 rows further back. I mean it's only 4 rows, and we're in the upper bowl anyways. Thoughts? Remember, brother in-law's first game ever.

Got "the boys of winter" for christmas, such a great book chronicling the 1980 team. Probably my favorite quote so far (referring to Pavelich and the cone head line): http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14...4f531bc886.jpg

While watching 30 for 30 the last few days, showing off the one debuting in Feb about 1980 but from the Russian point of view. Should be good.
