If they can't win in regulation tonight, it's all but over for them.

You can clear enough cap room for Saad without moving Sharp or Seabrook.

If that is the case than fine. I was not aware that was possible.

I posted this on another board, I'll paste it here, if you're interested. Where the cap lands is going to dictate just how good the Hawks can be next year. It'll be a transition year, either way.

Quote:

Currently, for next season, the Hawks have approximately $63 million committed to the cap. Right now the NHL's cap ceiling is projected to be around $73-$74. Let's call it $73 million to be safe for our projections.

We have currently 8 forwards, 4 defenseman, and 2 goalies with that money. Logic will tell you that we probably want to add a couple more skaters. 12 usually doesn't get you through a full season in the NHL. SO, let's do that.

Brandon Saad. Uh, yeah. That's a no brainer. In-house prospects with his kind of upside are a lot cheaper for their production than finding it again in free agency. Especially long term. He's coming back. Let's estimate a $5 million cap hit for Saader. Bring up Hartman. Bring up Mashinter. Bring up McNeil. Bring up Johns and Cumiskey. We now have 12 forwards and 6 defensemen and we're at just a shade under $71 million. So, about 4 more people to sign/recall for about $2 million. Doable, but probably want a little more "bang for your buck". So you ship off Bickell for a bag of sand, and possibly Shaw for a draft pick in the 100th round (just kidding, obviously, but a 5th-7th rounder each for those two wouldn't be asking too much).
All the sudden we have about $8 million to fill 5 spots. Much more doable. Resign Vermette to a Brad Richards-like deal. 4 spots $6 million. Maybe find a veteran presence on the back end to help shoulder some of the load for TvR and Johns. 3 spots $4 million. And when those holes we're filling are bottom 6/role player types? Easily done. Kruger for another $2 million? Sure. Now just 2 players, $2 million. Easy.

ANYWAY, the point is...this is when those prospects we all hear so much about all the time are useful. So does unloading the ridiculously overpriced Bickell. First year of the new contracts for 19 and 88, we'll have to fill the spots with some kids. McNeil, Johns, Hartman, etc. come in handy now. They've had time to get some "seasoning".

Also, the above is even MORE true with the signings of Baun and Paliotta. Paliotta was a GREAT signing that may save one more big name from being dealt this offseason. Two capable bodies with a lot to prove for minimum deals.

Re: The NHL Thread

Looks good to me....I thought there was concern though that the cap was barely going to move because of the weak Canadian Dollar. As long as Sharp does not impact Saad or Seabrook it makes sense.

I was under the impression that things were much more dire.

Re: The NHL Thread

Well, exact things can't be predicted or figured out until they actually release the cap ceiling, but I'm guessing it'll be around $72m.

Wings with no Datsyuk or Sheehan tonight. Great...If they win tonight it would be the most amazing win.

And Drew Miller to the locker room after taking skate to face. Great night so far.

Re: The NHL Thread

So no Dats, Sheehan, Cole and Franzen. Shots are 10-1 Sens and Boston is winning against the Panthers. But yeah, I shoudknt worry.

By luck, more than anything (It was a nicely scored goal, but it's Mrazek who has been keeping the Wings alive). Ottawa is outshooting them 3-1 currently.

You would think they're Flyers bad when you read Tim's posts.

Jackets win again
#hottestteaminthenhl

Would the red wings or kings like to donate their obligatory playoff appearance to a team in need?

If you watched how the Wings have been playing the last month, Tim's posts are completely justified. They have been playing horrendous and the playoffs are slipping away.

I'm glad we're up a goal right now, but it looks like a completely different team from the one that started this season. It'll be a giant sigh of relief if they can come away with a victory tonight.

They're 13 minutes from essentially clinching a playoff spot.

Holy shit, I just saw that. Dude definitely needs to sit for at least 2-3. That was brutal.

I have no patience for that kind of brutality. Completely uncalled for.

The Sens are dominating the Wings while the Wings have a PP.

That's a reach. Boston is right on their heels and so is Ottawa. A lot of games left for those two teams to still overtake them in the standings.

I love them winning. I just don't want to get over-confident. That already happened when I thought they would comfortably make it into the post season this year when they had a stellar beginning.

Fuck this team tonight. This has been the ugliest shit I've ever seen. I've never seen them play this bad, ever. They are not making the playoffs and with that kind of effort don't deserve it. Wings had 17 shots through 65 minutes, fanning on 4 shots in the last 10 seconds of OT.

In my 18 years of watching the Wings, this last month has truly been some of the worst hockey I've seen the team play on a consistent basis. It's embarrassing.

This is near Toronto level meltdown that happened last year.
