See, I never knew Moore fought Cooke. That changes things a bit. However, leading up to game and so forth there was apparently a lot of talk going on. Whether Granato knew this or not, who knows. But there should be an onus that the players at least have some kind understanding of what might happen. To be fair though, Moore probably shouldn't have played anyway. It kinda goes back to the famous Flyers-Sens brawl that same year. The previous game, Martin Havlat high sticked the shit out of Mark Recchi, and tempers flared. When things got out of control the next game, it was Havlat on the bench and in the box, not answering the bell.

They all knew it would be ugly, for sure. But no one could have guessed Bertuzzi would go ape shit.

I see what you're saying, I do. But the general idea of all this is that Moore would have to answer the bell anyways. If it hadn't happened in that game, it would've in the next. Most guys in that situation jut want to get it over with early, hence Moore fighting in the first period of the next game they played. The general idea is, get the fight out of the way early, the score is settled, and everyone moves on.

(Cue Bron talking about how the Code is ludicrous)

And by all accounts it was over after that fight. The ugliness of that game was in large part due to the fact that Colorado was killing the Canucks at that point and running up the score (something we can all cheer about), not just avenging Naslund. Bertuzzi took advantage of the hostile setting and the rest is history.

Maybe just me, but I put zero blame on Tony Granato.

Re: The NHL 2013-14 Thread

And yes, Moore could have left it to an enforcer to settle the score for him. But unlike Havlat, Moore was a blue collar lower line winger still fighting for a nightly roster spot. He was ready and willing to answer the bell himself and get it over with. He knew that even if he was held out of the lineup for that first game back against Vancouver, they would've come at him the next. Just delaying the inevitable. He - and probably Granato - knew that the quicker they got this settled, the quicker everyone could move on. At least, that's how it should've been.

Very hard to watch those games. Extremely frustrating. It clearly points to the lack of talent/youth on defense and the need for an upgrade in goal, though Nabokov has missed lots of time this time and both Nilsson and Poulin are a better fit to be NHL backups at their best. Both of those problems are things I wanted Snow to address last summer and he didn't or more likely couldn't due to the budget restraints put on him by Wang. Losing Visnovsky for 44 (?) games was a huge blow to this defense, too. Budget restraints or not all these years with Snow, he needs to go but he isn't going anywhere as Wang is loyal, to a fault.

Re: The NHL 2013-14 Thread

I should have added, too, that I think Snow saw how we finished last season and felt that we didn't need to add much to continue progress and if there is truth to that, he is an idiot and clearly couldn't see what most Islander fans could see.

I dunno. Not his fault his team doesn't spend money unless it's forced to with an offer sheet.

Also not his fault that Rinne was hurt all year with a freak thing - I think that's a playoff team if they have him healthy all year.

And the Blue Jakets are not? :lol

Easily the most likely of the three teams to collapse is Columbus.

I agree with this and I'll also say that most people around here would like to see Poile and Trotz gone. As much as they have meant to the franchise, it's time for a regime change. This defensive first mentality is great if it's working but the people can only take so many 1-0 losses while watching offensive production in Milwaukee without starting to wonder why some of these guys aren't getting called up and guys like Rich Clune seem to have a roster spot locked up because Trotz likes the "grit"

Possibly but Preds are tied for most shutout losses and are once again one of the lowest scoring teams in the league. Having Rinne and Weber can force a playoff spot some years but it would be a guaranteed early exit.

Nashville is like Islanders south in terms of roster spending. We should combine your Weber, Jones and co. and Rinne with our forwards and we'd have a great team.

Pierre gives so much insight. Says the Wings need Datsyuk and Zetterberg for entry on the power play. 10 seconds later, when wings can't enter says that's where they need Datsyuk and Zetterberg. Just in case you forgot.

Huge win for the Rangers!! KING gets his shutout and now holds the franchise record for shutouts!! Also, the Rangers completed the season sweep of the Red Wings (which included 2 shutouts)!!

Leafs take out the Flyers last night. They came out flying but let up for the last 2 periods. Exciting game.

Horrible news here. Matt Stajan has been out because of the loss of his newborn son. I can't even begin to comprehend this. That has got to be one of worst things someone can experience in their life.

That's brutal.

On another note, Flyers need to keep their heads clear and focused. They had one of the toughest schedules of games remaining. I'm not expecting a huge win streak, but they need to collect points whenever they get a chance.

I wouldn't say "take out" when you cough up a point to a Conference team. :rolleyes
