That's pretty funny, but the refs should not have missed that.

Probably unsportsmanlike conduct. I don't think its too many men because hes not on the ice.

i did some research

Rule 56 - Interference

56.3 Bench Minor Penalty - A bench minor penalty shall be imposed when an unidentifiable player on the players’ bench or penalty bench or any Coach or non-playing Club personnel who, by means of his stick or his body, interferes with the movements of the puck or any opponent on the ice during the progress of the play.

I believe it would be called as an Interference penalty if I remember correctly... but I've never had to make a call like that, so I'm not completely sure. :lol

EDIT: Yep, it's interference: http://www.nhl.com/ice/page.htm?id=26348

EDIT 2: Sorry Cry Minarets, you beat me to it.

no worries...yeah, i wasn't sure if it'd be interference or too many men on the ice...oh well.

ps tort's press conference after the game was funny. everyone bitches in hockey. of course everyone is going to hear about the penguins bitching when they have two of the biggest stars in the league and are a very popular organization. :lol but, Orpik is one of my favorite players from the AHL and I will even admit that that wasn't the brightest play I've ever seen.

I've been reffing for almost ten years, and if that happened on my watch, I'd definitely have to go to the score table and thumb through the rule book a bit. Few things are more embarrassing than that. :lol

I'm a big fan of Orpik, definitely don't think he's the villain guys like Biron made him out to be in his post-game comments, but that hit was definitely dangerous. I've watched it a few times and it's tough to tell if it was intentional or not, but the fact remains that it was dangerous and could have been avoided. Deserving of the penalty he got.

Is he getting a hearing for that hit? I've seen hits that weren't nearly as bad as that result in suspensions this year.

Even if Orpik gets a hearing you know he's going to be sitting just one game, obviously.

I REALLY hope that Stepan is fine. That play was uncalled for. Orpik got beat and I don't totally hate him because it just appeared he was attempting a play rather than fully intending to blow Stepan up.

I agree with this for sure. What is your take on Bylsma's post-game comments that Orpik was on line to make the hit, then Stepan moved to try to avoid it, and the collision that occurred was an unfortunate consequence of that? He compared it to the Stars' Nystrom's hit on Kris Letang a couple months ago. Letang tried to duck out of the way and unfortunately Nystrom contacted his head.

I'm not saying Stepan was at all responsible, just saying that the result was likely not intended on Orpik's part.

Nothing I've seen from the league yet, anybody else seen anything?

My guess would be they are reviewing it now, probably taking into account the 5-minute major and game misconduct assessed on the play and if further supplemental discipline is required. I wouldn't be surprised if he gets a call from Sheriff Shanny

I'm a ranger fan and I would have to agree with most of that. Stepan side stepped him and there wasn't anywhere for Orpik to go. He did lean his leg out but I don't think he intended to blow Stepan up like that.

It was a dumb move, but I'm not sure it was malicious. You can just as easily mangle your own knee there.

I think I've said in here before that nothing - NOTHING - is worse for being a defenseman than getting cleanly and obviously beat. You've basically failed at your job if you do so.

With that preface, you begin to understand the thought process of Orpik as the play is developing. He's going in for the hit, Stepan makes a move that will leave Orpik in the dust. At this point, instinct kicks in, and that is to do something - anything - to adjust your motion and keep from getting beat. Thus, out comes that knee.

That being said, it was avoidable. Orpik is not a villain or overly dirty player. I definitely don't think he meant to seriously injure or even light up Stepan. But it happened. Absolutely no onus on Stepan, none at all.

The Panthers have one line. That's it. Shut down Versteeg, Fleischmann, Weiss.

So how much ice time you think the stars for the Flyers/Pens get tomorrow?

Re: NHL 2011/2012 Thread

Neither team should even dress their stars. It's a totally meaningless game and you don't want to risk injury. With that said I'm sure it'll be physical as hell.

Laviolette and Granato should both dress for the game.

I'd love to see both teams call up ahl goons. That wouldn't make the nhl very happy.

Re: NHL 2011/2012 Thread

"TWO QUESTIONS: Here are two questions I'd like answered by hockey's intelligentsia. By John Tortorella, Peter Laviolette, and all the idiot Rangers and Flyers fans. If the Penguins are sissies, how come they're the ones laying people out? If the Penguins are whining, how come you're the ones bitching? Tortorella, the Rangers coach, has every right to be upset by Brooks Orpik's hit on Derek Stepan. It was knee-on-knee. Reckless. But things happen very fast in hockey. And I bet Torts didn't lecture Mike Rupp back on Jan. 6 after Rupp knocked Jordan Staal out for a month with a similar check. If I played against the Rangers, I'd blow up Torts every chance I could. It's a BLAST watching him explode: The facial tics, the histrionics, the theatrics. It's like watching an eight-year-old coach in the NHL. I don't see the connection between Orpik's hit and the alleged whining perpetrated by Sid and Geno. "
