Re: The NHL Thread (lolcaps)

HUGE win for Toronto last night. Gives them a bit of space between the rest of the pack and puts us 1 out from Boston.

The game likely should have gone to overtime as Dominic Moore was called on a pretty weak (in comparison to the rest of uncalled plays) play with 3 minutes left. For LONG stretches of play the Leafs took it to Boston.

Even if the Leafs fall short and don't make the playoffs this has been an insanely successful year for them. In saying that, They're a 23-25 minute a night D-man away from being in strong contention (assuming all of the young players continue to mature and grow)... Big ask, but they have so many other great pieces.

Agreed with Spector here. NHL needs to be doing a lot more in terms of suspensions.

Nice to see Tkachuk got suspended for 2 games, that was a real nasty elbow on Doughty. Thought he deserved 5 games but as a rookie he obviously has no history of dirty stuff so the NHL used that as consideration.

If the Flames beat the Caps it opens the door for both Pittsburgh or Chicago to surpass them in points with wins - CHI owns that tie breaker if it comes to that.

Hopefully SJ can do the Hawks a favor and beat Minnesota tonight so CHI can move 9 points ahead in the west if they beat VAN.

Certainly going to be an interesting finish to the season watching the race for the President's Trophy and the Art Ross!

I have no idea what your fascination with the President's trophy is but FYI the first tie breaker is ROW, which your Hawks trail both my Caps and the Jackets in. So if the Caps lose tonight AND the Hawks obtain only one point, the Caps would still be ahead of them.

And technically the first tie breaker right now in standings is games played (the team with fewer is "ahead" of the team with more) which again the Hawks have more of those than the teams in front of them.

Not that any of that matters. The President's trophy is 10000% meaningless.

One thing I do find interesting as I was perusing the standings just now is that there are exactly 16 teams with positive goal differentials and 14 with negative. The 16 with positive are the 16 that currently hold playoff spots. I don't know why but I found that interesting.

Regarding tie breakers my only point was that the Hawks had that against Pittsburgh currently if both say win out.

As for the rest. yeah, it is a nice bauble but it is entirely meaningless and sometimes I think it is more of a curse than a blessing. To me there is only one award a team should give a damn about and that is winning the Stanley Cup, anything else is just silly banners or whatever.

Sounds like a very distinct cutoff line between the good/bad teams.

That is a bit odd though.

Yeah, that is pretty amazing. When I saw that it immediately reminded me of a goal Athanasiou scored a couple months ago (ironically against the Pens) the only real difference was that Athanasiou went forehand and roofed it while Crosby threaded the needle with a sick backhand shot. That level of talent is always amazing to watch, especially Crosby since he has been scoring highlight reel goals since his debut.

I just dont see a convincing argument where travel and regional division play outweighs the sensibility of just ranking teams 1-8.

It simply defies logic to me. To hell with the divisional standings, go by total points where in each conference the 1 seed plays the 8 seed, the 2 seed plays the 7 seed, the 3 seed plays the 6 seed and the 4 seed plays the 5 seed.

Re: The NHL Thread (lolcaps)

Hawks got screwed by an awful team and some lousy officiating. Hayden's goal should have counted to tie it up because Panik was not offisdes and that was clearly goalie interference by Henrick Sedin on the OT game winner. Least we got a point out of it though so the Wild only pick up one point in the standings.

Nope it did not but I know the rules and no one was offsides on that goal. Call on the ice was a good goal and overturned after review, Crock of shit IMO.

Favorite part of last night was definitely my one Devils fan friend bragging about beating us in OT :lol

Seriously, The Devils are awful and us not gaining ground on 3rd in the division is perfect for me. I could not have asked for a better outcome last night. The Islanders game is different because they are a playoff potential team. Not sure where Sal has been, but he should be happy with how that team turned it around this year. Even if they don't get in, the fact that the Islander got themselves in position after the start they had is pretty impressive. Especially when they play in the MET.

Devils haven't made the playoffs in 5 years. That Schneider trade sure worked out for them....

Lu's last big move before leaving for Toronto really.

The Devils are still recovering from the Kovy departure and Parise leaving for the Wild. The tough part for them is that they don't seem to be close or really improving much. Henrique didn't turn out to be the big time player they thought he would be in 2012. The addition of Hall from Edmonton didn't do that much either. Not really sure how they move forward.

All of that said: I remember when the Rangers missed the playoffs for 8 straight seasons. The Devils have won 3 cups since we won our last, and during that 8 season drought they pretty much owned us. On top of that, they knocked us out of the ECF in 2012 and their fans were brutal during it. So as far as I am concerned....good. I won't lose any sleep over them being irrelevant for another 5 years to be honest.

For me, the Islanders are different because I want to experience that rivalry at some point. When I started watching hockey, the Islanders were already bad. They have never been better than an random first round playoff team every now and then since I started watching hockey. So I don't share the same level of dislike for them that I have for the Devils.

TMoore4075 03-22-2017 10:45 AM

Re: The NHL Thread (lolcaps)

Yeah you're right about the Devils, they really haven't improved and don't seem to be. The Schneider deal made sense at the time but the team around is just god awful right now. Roy in his prime couldn't save the team that's in NJ now.
