Anyone else read this on Horton? God, that's depressing. Never liked him, but I wish him the best.

I actually like Horton a lot. Hate to see that happen to anyone.

Two things I learned last night (even though I already knew both)

1. The Blues are REALLY good. I mean I knew they were, but god damn.

2. I am so glad my team doesn't play in the West. The East truly just can't hang.

Brad Richards has been playing VERY well for Chicago, but tonight was by far his best game for the Hawks. Amazing how if you put him on a line with 88, the two of them actually produced. Imagine that.

A very good read about Pat Burns. He deserved to get into the hhof before he died. It sucks that he didn't.

Anyone else wish the Pens would make their new alternates their permanent jerseys? For that matter make the white ones permanent too. Let's party like its 1992

Re: The NHL Thread

So I got done watching the NASCAR finale yesterday. Kevin Harvick won the title with his fifth win of the season. This was immediately followed by conversations about if the Chase format really represents who the true champion is. Jeff Gordon would have 7 titles including this year's had they never changed it 14 years ago.

This sparked a comments about how every sport's playoffs are flawed and don't reward the best team all year as champion, but rather reward the best team when it matters.

It got me thinking...I believe hockey is the exception to the rule. The NHL really has two seasons. With more than 50% of the teams making it to the second season, I do believe the NHL playoffs produce the true champion almost every year. It is a war to get through 4 rounds in the nhl. Any team that can do that does deserve the title.

What do you all think? Does the NHL have it right? Or do we get champions that just won when it mattered, but maybe were not the best team they year.

I think your analysis of the NHL is a little off.

Most European soccer leagues crown the best team as champion. These leagues are the most "fair" because there are no playoffs. In the Premier League, every team plays every other team twice and the team with the best record is the champion.

MLB probably is the league that determines its champion more based on luck than any other major league in the US, though it could be the NFL. Not exactly sure. NHL is right behind because any time you have a sport where there is very little scoring, you are going to need many games in order to get rid of some of the noise and luck and random variation.

The NBA is the "exception" in the US. Again, because there are many many possessions in each game and much scoring, this tends to get rid of some of the noise. Intuitively, the NBA is the league where we have seen the most "dyansties" so to speak. Great teams are able to win many championships in a row in the NBA because they aren't derailed by stretches of bad luck.

The NHL playoffs are the best spectacle in all of professional sports. Teams can definitely get hot in the playoffs but there is no denying that the nature of the NHL playoffs minimizes fluke champions more than any other sport.

Not sure I agree with the MLB having the most 'luck'. Over a 162 game season the best teams rise to the top. I can believe the luck argument for the game wild card winners but then those teams have to win three series. Look at the giants and royals.

I think the NBA crowns the "best team" as champion the most, simply because of the nature of the sport. It's why you usually see the ECF and WCF as a 1 vs. 2, or you hear people say "the Bulls will probably face the Cavs in the ECF this year". You don't hear that in hockey, simply because there are too many variables that get thrown into the mix.

2010 is my favorite example of this. Who say Halak stone walling the Caps and then the Pens that year? Who saw the Flyers making their magical run to the SCF? Not many people. BUT I think that's what makes the Stanley Cup playoffs so special. How boring would it be if all it took was some analysis and educated guesses and most people would already know the Stanley Cup champ? It's one reason I really can't get in to the NBA. There are 4-5 teams that really have a shot at the title, where while you watch teams battle for the Cup, everyone has a chance. Sure there are some series where teams just end up way out matched (Hawks vs. Wild in 2013 for example), but anything can happen. That's exciting, keeps you on the edge of your seat type shit...and it's why the Stanley Cup playoffs are the best.

So no, I don't think the Stanley Cup playoffs are the "exception", but I think that's a good thing.

I often wonder if the Patrick Kane stories would have been even more drunk. That Madison story is still one of my favorite things ever. Maybe he would have been even more fucked up in 2010 if they hadn't won?

Re: The NHL Thread

I guess what I am getting at is the NHL's playoffs are really a season in their own. The regular season is kind of a formality. Not many times have I watched the cup finals and thought, wow what a joke that ______ won the thing. Normally, we can all agree that the team who won it deserved it.

Yesterday there is a strong argument to be made that Jeff Gordon was the better man. He was even winning the race before his team decided to move aside for the championship contenders to race it out.

It would be like if the #1 team in the NHL lost a series 4-3 and 3-4 of those losses in the playoffs were in the shootout.

I shoulder part of the blame for that. Been busy.

Contribution for the thread today: I still love Ryan Callahan. My affection for him is well-documented here (Chris and I have salivated over him a few times), but it bears repeating that he is pretty much everything you want in a hockey player.
