You're right about Florida; their top line of Weiss, Fleischmann, and Versteeg account for 47% of all their team's goals.

Some others I checked on, in comparison (going mostly by thread popularity)
Chicago (Toews, Sharp, Hossa... this one's hard to pin down a top line because of all the shuffling): 45%
Philadelphia (Giroux, Hartnell, Jagr): 37%
Boston (Lucic, Horton, Krejci): 23% - Boston actually has a little more scoring from their "second" line of Seguin, Marchand, and Bergeron, who account for 29% of the team's goals.

Unfortunately that argument holds little weight because....

Toews, Sharp, Hossa is not the first line. Toews, Kane + is the Hawks' first line. Sharp, Hossa + is the 2nd line. So while the scoring isn't really spread out up and down the lineup, their top two lines have been dominating. Both the first and second lines have 2 point-per-game players. Sharp and Hossa have been on fire lately. Both score again tonight.

that's why I said that's a tough one since there has been some rotation in the hawks lines so far. I wasn't even making an argument at all, just giving some stats. I'm not interested in getting in a dick measuring contest over someone else's teams (I have enough to worry about with my own)

And let's all get on the same page here. I was not saying the Hawks lacked depth. I simply was looking for teams to compare FLA to, and the Hawks were an easy choice as they're well represented in this thread. I took the three guys I did because they are the top 3 on the team in terms of goals (Kane was fourth)They do get the majority of their production from 4-5 guys, but if you look around the league most teams do. Thats the norm.

Are you then going to turn around and get another elite goaltender?

Are you implying that Leighton is an elite goaltender? :ugh

There were several affordable options in goal that Homer could have gone after that off-season that would have been an upgrade over Leighton

Here's hoping I bring the Flyers better luck tomorrow than the last time I saw a Flyers/Bruins game.....

No I was not implying Leighton was an elite goaltender. I was simply stating that Homer had good reason NOT to invest more money in another goaltender, who would be considered "elite". And why should had he? The team played great in front of Leighton, and he made timely saves. It's unfortunate he'll always get pegged for letting in Kane's goal, but I have no doubt that without his efforts, the team doesn't even have a shot at making the playoffs on the final day.

Andreas Lilja and Erik Gustafsson are getting nearer to a return for the Flyers. That's huge since the top 4 are playing 23-25-plus minutes a game and Kevin Marshall and MA Bourdon are combing for maybe 15 minutes a game. Can't have that for an extended period of time.

That seems really surprising given the way Kessel started the season.

Very solid performance from the Hawks. Taking care of business against bad teams lately but they are doing it with ease. 81 and 10 are really feeding off each other. Losing Seabrook is not good but the defense has been a lot better lately and we have some depth there with 8 guys who can play the position, but that does mean the likely return of the 8-2 pairing.

Rinaldo disagreed he said the hit was clean actually. That hit was a 2 minute penalty and nothing more. If you're going to suspend based on that hit, then every boarding call should be suspendable.

That hit was most definitely not clean. When you see a guy's numbers the entire time and still throw him head-first into the boards, that warrants a suspension. Simple as that. When you see so many players going down with concussions, the league has to send a message that plays like that are not okay.

dduncan6er 12-19-2011 03:16 PM

Re: NHL 2011/2012 Thread

Completely disagree. There's been much worse boarding calls this year that haven't even resulted in a phone call from Shannahan. The only reason he was supsended is because most people felt he should have been suspended after the Miller incident.

You shouldn't make a decision based off what Shanahan does or fails to do. The hit is illegal, case closed.

So every boarding call should be a multiple game suspension?

fonzz41 12-19-2011 03:42 PM

Re: NHL 2011/2012 Thread

The big issue I see Shanahan and others having to begin to address soon is the line between what is a penalty that warrants supplemental discipline, and what can be settled by the on-ice officials. That line is getting increasingly more grey, IMO. The league needs to come down hard on the head shots, but at what point are they starting to micromanage the job of the on-ice official? For example, IMO, Leino's elbowing penalty from a couple weeks back could have been settled by the referee.

Shanahan has done a great job so far, I'm as big a fan of his as anybody. But as the season progresses, that's something he needs to be careful of.

Until it's weened out of the sport, yes. You want head injuries decreased, start cracking down on any unnecessary hit, including elbowing, hits from behind and boardings.

dduncan6er 12-19-2011 03:44 PM

Re: NHL 2011/2012 Thread

I was right. Hit wasn't too bad and he's being suspended primarily because of his history.

“It’s hockey, you hit and go into the boards, I don’t think it was dirty at all,” Rinaldo told CSNPhilly.com reporter Tim Panaccio. “[It was] shoulder-to-shoulder and just momentum. He’s big guy, maybe double my weight. His momentum carried him into the boards awkwardly. I don’t think it was dirty at all.”

Rinaldo doesn't seem to think he got hit in the numbers.

OMGCG once visited a psychic... to warn her.

Two games for Bourque. What an ugly hit... Surprised he didn't get more. Combination of no big injury and lack of priors are what kept the number of games low.

Rinaldo doesn't seem to think he got hit in the numbers.

Look, we get it, you're a Bruins fan. But he delivered a violent hit to a guy whose numbers were facing him and was in a compromising position. He eventually made first contact with Rinaldo's shoulder, but the guys shoulders were parallel with the boards and Lucic had plenty of time to minimize the hit.

If the Miller incident doesn't happen Lucic doesn't even get a phone call on this.

This is nonsense. Of course his history has to do with it. A player who has never been suspended might have simply gotten a fine or slap on the wrist. But Lucic has previously been fined and suspended on different occasions, so it's obvious that had something to do with it.

Yeah. I think it was right. Seabrook lost the puck and turned a bit at the last second and I think that made it worse for him.

But, I wouldn't rule out injury yet. It's been less than 24 hours since the incident.

Very true. Shanny said there's no apparent major injury, but who knows what symptoms might surface in the next day or two.

Yikes, I don't even know where to begin.....

You watch the game? I'm guessing not. If you did, I'm sure you'd remember that your boy got a major for boarding and a game misconduct.

Dirty hit from a player that has a checkered history. Yea, he absolutely deserved to be suspended. Take the homer glasses off.....

I watched the game and I disagreed with the call on the ice. Thought it was 2 for boarding then and I think the same thing now. I'm not a homer when it comes to stuff like this. Thought Chara should have been suspended last year, thought lucic probably deserved a couple games for running miller, and I thought mcquaid probably should have got a game for kneeing this year. He was only suspended because of his history.

I only watched the first period. Got sucked into finishing Stephen King's 11/22/63. Great book if you like alternate history/time travel.

It was a fun game. Glad the Flyers hung in there and stole a point. Once the SO hit I knew it was over. I like how the Flyers score two in the SO which is rare for them in itself and STILL lose because their goalie lets in all three. Spectacular. Some of the Avs SO goals were filthy.

And supposedly in the last two years the Avs are now 17-1 in SOs. That's gross.

I'm thinking Matt Duchene has something to do with that last stat.

Yeah if the Avs can actually GET to the shootout, they're pretty unstoppable. The problem for them is getting there. They blew a 2-goal lead in the 3rd period to San Jose last week... stuff like that just drives me up the wall.

Indeed, although Ryan O'Reilly's clincher was even better than Duchene's last night, IMO. Sick, sick stuff.

But can you guys see what I'm talking about in terms of the Avs defense? Way too many let downs. Letting all those Flyers crowd the net on that last goal was the perfect example. Way too soft. That's where Adam Foote excelled, but they lack a new guy like that who can make opponents pay for being in front.

Granted, once Jagr packs his fat booty somewhere, it's near impossible to move him. That guy is a behemoth. I forgot how strong he is on the puck and how good he is at protecting it.

Wings 17-5 in their last 22. Not so bad. This is where next years format wouldn't be good. Wings would be starting on the road against Minny right now instead of having round 1 starting at home against the Blues. Also 6 of the top 8 teams right now are in the Norris Division, yeah I'm gonna call it that until we have a name, so that would suck for St Louis and Nashville but...as we've said negatives and positives with both. And for me the positives outweigh the negatives overall.
