One thing I've noticed about Mike Yeo is he's a master at identifying a team's strategy and adapting to it mid-game. I suppose that also means he's great at communicating that to his players effectively enough that they're able to go out and do it. But I've seen it a number of times, and not just the Avalanche, where the Wild are clearly not the better team for like 40 minutes. Then, all of a sudden, they make a couple adjustments and are all of a sudden in complete control. He's got that ability to find pressure points and push. Sometimes it takes two periods to find them - and sometimes that's too late - but they'll usually make a fight of it. |

Giroux, Voracek and Streit ain't too shabby either but I would rather have Pens or Hawks trio way above those three. Stamkos, Drouin and Hedman is dirty too. Hedman is built for 3 on 3 hockey.

Re: The NHL Thread
Dylan Larkin show starts tonight. He'll end up back in Grand Rapids when Helm and Pavel come back but we'll see how he is tonight. Would love to have Larkin to have a good game and answer that question Babcock asked after the game 7 loss of "where is the next Pavel Datsyuk?"

Apparently a cap change until 2031. He is now a UFA, goodbye. |

The Los Angeles Kings and the NHLPA have reached a settlement on Mike Richards contract grievance that will leave Richards counting against the Kings cap for $1.67 million until 2031 on top of a recapture penalty of $1.32 million, which the Kings will pay in each of the next five years. |

I really am down on the arena. It looks like a minor league arena. The no seats one end looks terrible as expected. How they built this arena without hockey in mind is mind boggling considering the Isles lease was coming up and there were rumors of a move and not getting a deal done for a new Coliseum.
The building is quiet, though not a lot to cheer about. Our loud home ice advantage is seemingly gone. Tavares goal was sweet. He has some talent. |
Re: The NHL Thread
Oh look, the Kings have no offense. What's new.
|
Re: The NHL Thread
Quick has looked god awful. I know it's only two games in but something is not right with him. He couldnt track the puck or hang onto it tonight to save his life.
If Quick isn't Quick the Kings are screwed. |
Re: The NHL Thread
Nice night for Kane against the Islanders last night. 2 goals in a 3-2 OT win!!!!
|
Re: The NHL Thread
Rangers had a pretty good end to their game! Loving it!
|
Re: The NHL Thread
Finally! It's my turn tonight!
|
Re: The NHL Thread
Although they completely fell apart in the last two minutes last night, CBJ looked very good. Physical game, totally pushed the Rangers around all night. Definitely expecting a fight or two tonight when they go again in NY.

Re: The NHL Thread
http://m.thn.com/blog/kings-gm-dean-...rds-a-tragedy/
Thoughts on this piece from our Kings fan? I don't think this is a good look for Lombardi at all. Pretty much smears Mike Richards, and obviously Richards holds responsibility for his actions, but the man has a drug problem, and basically Lombardi self promotes by saying stuff like "I tried to help" and "this is the most traumatic episode of my career". HIS career?? Seems like a pretty selfish thing to say. |
Re: The NHL Thread
Plus the fact that they went head over heels in defending Voynov--unbelievable.
|
Re: The NHL Thread
Yeah, sounds like Lombardi is butt hurt he dropped he ball with The Richards contract. Definitely selfish and embarrassing. I'm not a fan of Richards, as a player, and I don't know him as a person (never even met the guy). But I know there's a line between hockey and life and Lombardi looks very insensitive. I don't get how he can say how much he loves Richards and then put him down like that and make it all about himself.
I understand that Lombardi may feel that he put all his efforts into "helping" Richards (at least I'd like to believe that) but we will never know what exactly he did or said, or even knew himself about what Richards was going through. He obviously feels betrayed, and he has the right to feel that way. But that press release is awful, obviously some bad blood spilled at the end of that relationship. |
Re: The NHL Thread
Also, he obviously doesn't know much about addiction if he is shocked he was lied to/betrayed by an addict. I just want to put all this behind us (Richards, Voynov, Stoll) and carry on to our shitty season.
Lots of games on tap for tonight! |

Re: The NHL Thread
Zetterberg has 5 points in the last two games and Abby has 4 goals in those two games. They put Larkin on a different line cause the whole team struggled the first two periods and he still looked good on that line. I dunno know what you do when Helm and Pavel get back.

Re: The NHL Thread
Your Vezina candidate Steve Mason.....
|
Re: The NHL Thread
Caps with a decent start. Sloppy in the first but much better in the final two. They didn't look awesome but they got it done. Oshie looks like he'll fit in very nicely. Huge upgrade on the top line.

Re: The NHL Thread
Rangers are making me happy right now!
|
Re: The NHL Thread
Hawks just stepped off the peddle last night in the third period, classy - no need to completely humiliate the Islanders.
Honestly though - the core of these teams (Toews, Kane, Keith) have accomplished almost everything possible. Each has 3 championships and a Conn Smyth Trophy. All have been all stars multiple times, Kane has a ROY award, Keith has 2 Norris Awards, Keith and Toews each have Olympic gold medals, Kane has a silver Olympic Medal, etc, etc. I know it is a team effort but without that trio the Hawks are nowhere near as good as they have been recently, nice to know they are ll under contract for years - good core to work with! |

Jackets played well vs the Rangers Love, John |
Re: The NHL Thread
PS. But they are still 0-2.
|
Re: The NHL Thread
Artemi Panarin looks like he is going to be a damn good player, offsets the loss of Saad.
TVR is really upping his game. Kane is just plain amazing! I know it is early but the Hawks look really solid on both offense and defense, hell even their backup keeper kept the Islanders scoreless until there was a little over a minute left in the game. Gonna be a fun year! |

Re: The NHL Thread
I was happy not to see the Hawks today on the schedule. Because I worked the weekend, I was off today and enjoyed some afternoon hockey.
JT was the best player on the ice...again. He was awarded the first penalty shot of his career but sadly didn't convert it to put the game away and we held on. In other news, I lost to my 10 year old in H.O.R.S.E. for the first time ever. I'm not sure if that is a reflection of my skills or his. |

Re: The NHL Thread
If Quick doesn't turn it around, Kings will be in trouble. Not panicking now, not even a little. Should see Enroth in goal tonight, Lucic taken off the 1st line and Brown moved from 3rd to 1st with Kopi and Gabi. Lucic needs to find his way on this team and putting him up in front was not wise. Dustin has earned that spot and he always shines next to Kopi. Need to come out strong tonight.
|
Re: The NHL Thread
Ovie not in tonight due to personal reasons? Meh, I mean, I'm sure whatever that means is somewhat legit, hopefully, but that happens a little too often for my liking with him. Like it's game 2 bud. Already with this?
:thumbsdow |
Re: The NHL Thread
We'll lend you Neuvirth. He's good in situations when players have personal shit to deal with apparently.
|
Re: The NHL Thread
Capitals absolutely just got 100% hosed on this challenge bullshit. Caps player put a screen on the goalie. Zero contact was made. Goal overturned. I need someone in here without Caps colored glasses to tell me if I'm losing my mind but that's absolute insanity what I just saw. Like. Holy fucking shit. That is un fucking real.
I mean just wow. If that's the rule now. Just wow. |

I'll try to find a clip because I need an unbiased opinion here. I cannot believe what I just saw.

Re: The NHL Thread
https://mobile.twitter.com/CapitalsH...7Ctwgr%5Etweet
Originally called a goal. Challenged. Overturned because 83 red interfered. Someone tell me they legitimately see interference. |
Re: The NHL Thread
I hate the Caps, I hate the Sharks.
That's a very soft call. Caps player IS in the crease as Jones is establishing position (barely) for the shot. Technically, I don't think the call is wrong but it's bullshit it was called. Or overturn or whatever. Happy though cause Jones is my goalie. |
Re: The NHL Thread
I mean it just looks to me like the puck is past Jones before Beagle even really crosses Jones' sight line. And I don't even see contact, really at all. And the crease thing isn't really enforced these days. I'm just not buying it, not even a little bit.
It's very rare I get this worked up about a goal decision. But the fact this is the first challenge involving the Caps and the fact that they REALLY needed that goal, plus the fact that I just do not see interference. I dunno. I'm salty. |
Re: The NHL Thread
It was a bad call, no doubt. I haven't watched a game with challenges, who reviews the play?
|
Re: The NHL Thread
Just saw a different angle, really think it should not have been overturned now.
|
Re: The NHL Thread
I guess they review it in Toronto as well as in house. Ref just goes to the phone like a standard review.

|
Re: The NHL Thread
Ugly night in Caps land. Burn the tape.
|
Re: The NHL Thread
After a little bit of interneting, it seems the general consensus in the hockey world is that the Orlov goal should've indeed counted. While I do feel better that most see it my way, I am not thrilled with the challenges being called inconsistently, and I'm fearful this sets a dangerous precedent. If applying a solid screen is now considered goaltender interference, that changes everything. And if goalies feel like all they have to do when they get screened is flail a little bit (which Martin Jones did not, in his defense) to get a call reversed, that will make for a seriously depressing sport. Hopefully, this was a one off that occurred in a game that the Caps lost for many other reasons, and not how this will be called all the time.
Yes, I'm finished ranting about this goal. |

Kings get 3 PP's in a row and can't score one goal. :BANG

Re: The NHL Thread
So I got a hat trick in the hat trick challenge last night. One of the 3% who got all 3 right last night. That's my second hat trick of the season.
Hey, I gotta find positives somewhere. On a Kings note, Lucic is garbage. This is typical Lucic shift: skate puck down to offensive zone on the side boards, throw it to the slot hoping someone is there, other team grabs it because no one is there. Slowly recovers and strides down to defend. When he doesn't pass and shoots, this is what I hear "Lucic shot goes wide of the net." |

Re: The NHL Thread
I guess my "just wow" comment was moreso directed at Trotz for holding him out for a simple mistake like that. I mean on the one hand, kudos to him for holding all his players to the same standard. On the other, it's an honest mistake that everyone does make. Per the article, this hasn't happened before with Ovie and I don't remember it happening at all last year with anyone. Not to mention, that's freaking Ovie and we need that guy.
