Random observation. How is Zac Rinaldo still in the league?

Can’t wait to hear Crosby talk about hits to the head again. He sure had a lot to say about Wilson. Can’t wait to hear his thoughts this time.

Wonder if the caps with shrug their shoulders and say the hit was ok and that oshie put himself in a bad spot like they do with so many of tommy wilsons hits.

What is Malkin supposed to do there? I mean Oshie is skating at him, Oshie is shorter, Malkin doesn’t extend an his elbow, he doesn’t launch himself into Oshie, doesn’t change direction to make contact?

I mean ya it looks bad on the face of it, but when you break it down, it’s really not that bad.

Re: The NHL Thread: featuring Gritty, the regular season mascot champ.

Oh dear. Ugh, it’s a clear head shot. First of all. Second of all TJ is the defending player and is not eligible at all to be checked there. Third of all it didn’t really look like TJ was going to try and hit Malkin, but instead skate behind him and go after the puck. It’s at that moment Malkin decides to lean in with the shoulder, making direct contact with the side of the head, delivering an illegal check to an ineligible player. So yeah. Not sure why we’re defending this one suddenly.

Crosby’s the one who chimed in when Wilson threw a hit that didn’t happen in a game that involved Crosby. I’m just curious if he’ll feel as compelled to offer his thoughts this time.

I’m glad you like it. And it’s true. Aside from the illegal check that Malkin threw, there was an actual hockey game played. And the Caps didn’t look very good in it. They’re very hesitant and make many questionable decisions with the puck in their own end. That leads to high danger chance after high danger chance. They gotta curtail that. Holtby is the reason the Caps didn’t lose last night. And honestly, Braden’s not been consistently stellar yet either this year. He was very good last night.

That really was a weird play with Geno and TJ last night. At first look, I didn't see anything in it, but when you slow it down, it is clear that Malkin raised his shoulder/elbow. It also looks like TJ was trying to play the puck. Not sure it is worth a suspension, but it definitely was a lack of judgement by Malkin in the moment. No issues with the way it was called.

If they’re anything like his political takes it should be a hot one.

Brohan’s take aside, it’s a bad hit, and Malkin should absolutely be suspended. I’d say 2-3 games sounds right.

I first read this as "If I had any money, i'd bet the pens trade him by december 1st." :lol

Could you imagine?

He should get a game or two.

You are either on the side of getting head shots out of the game or not; regardless of Jersey.

Bingo. Exactly. Ideally the league would start with harsher penalties (see: any of Matty’s posts on this) but that’s not where we’re at, so for Malkin, it should be a couple games.

Re: The NHL Thread: featuring Gritty, the regular season mascot champ.

Im borderline on whether or not that is worth a game. He definitely took a shot but I have a hard time buying he was intentionally trying to hit his head, it was such a weird angle Oshie came in and Malkin is so much taller... plus he was controlling the puck at the time.

Maybe if he had a history I would say yes, but a play like that happens multiple times every game, its just normally is shoulder to shoulder.

DoPS has given Tom Wilson 5 more games for the illegal head shot to teammate TJ Oshie

He intentionally didn’t avoid hitting his head. Same thing.

He looked right at him and planted his shoulder on his chin.

It is a bad hit, and I agree it should be a game or two. Barbs with the good assessment on why.

I'm in the 1-2 games camp for Malkin

One thing is a fact. Oshie takes a beating more than any other player in the NHL that I can see.

I respect him and his game completely.

I don't think it is possible to dislike TJ Oshie, especially if you are American.

Hard assess that in a blink of a moment play like that, especially when its the guy holding the puck and the skater is coming at him.

1-2 games at absolute max if they want to use him as an example, im fine with that.

Im just talking more from the POV that the league prob wont look at it that way since hes not a repeat offender.

Re: The NHL Thread: featuring Gritty, the regular season mascot champ.

I dislike oshie but because he plays for the caps and makes things hard on the Pens; not because he’s a douche. He’s not a douche.

Despite Malkin controlling the puck he leaned in. That’s why I think it should be a game or two. That and I’m in the camp the NHL should do more to get rid of head shots. So if you rage on Wilson’s hits, Porolov (sp?), or Nisky hitting Sid in the playoffs a couple years ago, you should also think Malkin was out of line here too; intentional or not.

No supplemental discipline for Malkin.

Well that’s that I guess.

So much for getting rid of head shots

Pens got the league in their pocket.

But honestly, there just isnt consistency.

Yes I personally think they should.

I just think with the game miscounduct that was enough for the league in the way they treat things.

Ive come to accept they are never going to crack down in the manner that would change the way guys play until theyre on their 4th or 5th offense.

I wasn’t commenting on any suspension talk but just that I’ve come to believe almost everything they do out there is intentional.

I watch my sons games, varsity high school and I ask if the player meant to do that, was it intentionally and he always says yeah. Players know exactly what they are doing, at least for the most part.
