Re: The NHL Thread

Next couple weeks should be interesting to watch the individual stats. Two races intrigue me: can Ovi rip off 7 goals in the next 8 games to hit 50 for the year and can Kane get 6 points in 6 games to hit 100 for the year? I would not place a bet against either of them but I think Kane has an easier road to the milestone considering he has all but locked up the Art Ross Trophy and is in a dead heat with Crosby for the Hart IMO. Calder (2 weeks ago I would have said Panarin had it locked up but his production has slipped notably of late) and Vezina are going to be tight races as well. Here's to a good and fun last handful of games guys, lets see what happens in the trophy races!

I really hope Ovie doesn't concern himself with 50 goals. It's not important. And frankly I don't think he is concerned with it.

I agree with you completely, he needs to focus on leading that team and getting them ready for the playoffs. Kane probably has less of a concern with leading since Toews in captain so Kane can lead by example. I imagine guys like Stamkos, Getzlaf, Benn, Brown, McDonagh, etc, etc are doing the same as I hope Ovie is doing.

I think they days of multiple guys racking up 50+ goals or 100+ points are nearly gone and it will take rare talents to put up numbers in a single season like Gretzky, Hull, Howe, Lemieux, Esposito, Jagr, Robitaille, Bossy, Yzerman, etc, etc are going to be few and far between unless they really institute that no icing the puck on a PK or radically change the goalie equipment. We all like goals but I always wonder why they constantly reinvent the wheel to show people a handful of extra goals a night when the truth is the NHL is the least popular of the 4 major US sports!

Edit: what I meant is that a few extra goals per night is not going to vault the NHL over the MLB, NFL or NBA in terms of popularity or ratings.
