Video review for penalties is dumb. They have four guys out there in striped shirts who are more than capable of making calls. What I don't like is the embellishment or diving that some of these guys do. Ridiculous sometimes.

agreed. it's not done in any other sport. even injury related hits in football.

Not a fan of video review for penalties. Might as well take the refs off the ice and keep them up in a booth if that were the case.

Meh, I fully admit that I really only post here during the playoffs, because I don't pay attention to much of the league outside of the Flyers until then. The regular season is fun, but for the most part it's pretty meaningless.

Hey, my opinion with the playoff posters is, "the more the merrier". Just don't take us too seriously.

Actually... take us seriously. It's more fun.

EDIT: Flyers smell like poo.

Exactly.

The refs are human, they make mistakes just like players do. The fact that they do so well when there are hundreds of things to pay attention to in each game shows that they are pretty good at what they do.

And so that's why I'm pretty hesitant to blame the refs. Sometimes you are going to get the short end of the stick on officiating, but I would say they have less influence on the outcome of a game than most people think. Fact is, even a mistake is only going to matter ~20% of the time anyway since that's about how often a PP scores.

The possibility of human error adds to the excitement of the game.

EDIT: Unless it's your team that the human error affects. :lol

I feel the same about replay in all sports -- it should be used, with limitation, on plays that aren't judgment calls (i.e. goals in hockey, out-of-bounds in football, fair/foul in baseball, three-or-two in basketball, etc). However, any play that requires the ref to make a determination on the fly as to its legality, such as a penalty in hockey or balls and strikes in baseball, should be at the ref's sole discretion.

Well put. Although i wish the MLB used it for the Gallaragha/Jim Joyce blown perfect game call a couple summers ago.

Re: NHL 2011/2012 Thread

so Mike Smith finishes the game after he makes it look like he took a skate to the eyes, says he feels fine after the game, flies to Chicago, practices yesterday, practices today, but is a game-time decision and unavailable to the media due to "extreme circumstances." Get the fuck out of here.

EDIT: and we're still awaiting a Shaw decision....

Bron Yr Aur 04-17-2012 10:35 AM

Re: NHL 2011/2012 Thread

Phoenix clearly exploiting Shanahan's ineptness and backwards decision-making. Zero chance Smith misses this game.

Re: NHL 2011/2012 Thread

Anyone think Mike Smith being listed as a game-time decision is a show to try and get a suspension out of the NHL on Shaw?

edit:ha just as I was typing everyone else posted that too. So we're in agreement then?

edit 2: this is what you get Shanny for saying injuries play into it.

edit 3: If he's really hurt I redact all of that and I apologize to Mike Smith.

He can't be serious. The Caps are starting all the shit in that series. If Backstrom wants to keep cross checking people after the whistle he's going to continue to be facewashed and grabbed. The Bruins have about 5 or 6 guys that could have already knocked him out of the series if they wanted to.

bonzo48280 04-17-2012 10:39 AM

Re: NHL 2011/2012 Thread

There is roughly 0% chance Mike Smith doesn't play tonight. Such bullshit Shanahan is pulling.
