Re: The NHL Thread
2015 NBA finals had an 11.6 rating.
The 2010 finals between LA and Boston averaged a 10.6 or 18.14 million viewers http://www.statista.com/statistics/2...united-states/ |
Re: The NHL Thread
Unless you are a fan of one of the better teams in the NBA, I don't know how you can get excited about those playoffs. So predictable. MLB can have upsets because a hot pitcher or two, or shitty pitching on the flip side of that. The NFL is one game so one bad game is all that matters and then the NHL is...the NHL. 1995 the Devils win as the 5th seed. 1996 the Panthers go to the finals as the 4th seed. 1997 the 7th seeded Oilers beat the Stars and in 98 beat the Avs. 1998 and 1999 the top 3 in the East are gone in round 1. 2000 8th seeded Sharks beat the Blues in round 1. 2002 Canes got to the Finals. Sure they were the 3rd seed based off winning the SE division but were the 16th ranked team out of the 16 playoff teams. 2003 Western Finals was the 6th and 7th seed. 2004 Flames were the 6th seed and should have won the Cup, Gelinas goal was in. 2006 8th seeded Oilers go the game 7 of the Finals and if Rollie is healthy maybe they pull it off. God I love it. Hate it when you are the high seed but going in knowing you have a shot as a lower seed....hell of a lot more fun than being happy if you win one game in the first round.

Re: The NHL Thread
While I do want to see the sport do well and grow both nationally and internationally, I don't think ratings are indicative of how good the product is. I could be the only person in the world that watched hockey and it would still be my favorite sport.

The nba does indeed suck

The NHL Thread
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Worl...vision_ratings
2015 averaged an 8.7 or 14.7 million viewers Sox in 04 averaged a 15.8 or 25.4 million viewers Yankees in 01 had similar numbers, fractionally higher. 2011 Cards Rangers was the last time ratings cracked a 10 2012 Giants Tigers was a 7.6 an all time low A drastic drop overall in national numbers though since the 90s. Which makes sense, baseball has become very regional over the years. |

Then if you have either the Pens or the Caps knocked out by the Lightening we may be looking at the lowest rated SCF in history if it is Dallas or Nashville playing Tampa in the finals. |

Someone asked to see the ratings of the most recent World Series and NBA finals. Not everything's always directed at you Hail |
Re: The NHL Thread
Also considering their is not a single Canadian team that made the playoffs, the Kings are already out, the Wings are done, the Rangers are out and all the people who would cheer for or against Chicago will not help much. This could be a television ratings disaster for the NHL. Truthfully, if the Caps and Sharks get knocked out I will still keep watching but will not really care who wins.

Do you not think that the LA kings market has grown in recent years? Has Nashville not grown more fans than they had 10 years ago? Has Dallas or Tampa? The answer is absolutely yes. 3 of those franchises were only founded in the 90's, I don't expect them to have the support an original six would. But I think things are improving. And in Tampa especially. |

2015 the most recent year. The article only provided that 2010 stat and it was between arguably the two most popular franchises in the sports. For baseball 2015 again, 04 sox and 01 Yankees were two high outliers in the past 16 years, again the two most popular teams. And then 2012 is the all time low, 2011 the last time it was above a 10. If you look back into the 90s every series was up in or around the 20s. I just thought it was interesting information to share. |
Re: The NHL Thread
Doug Houda is one of the Wings new assistants. Reading the press release it says this "However, because the Bruins missed the Stanley Cup playoffs for a second successive season somebody had to take the fall and that guy was Houda, the only coach relieved of his duties two days after the regular season ended."
LOL. The team isn't very good because of cap issues so we fire one of our assistants and only one of them..... Good job Bruins. |
Re: The NHL Thread
I think if they go through with expansion they should raise the cap a bit.

For a resident Isles fan, looks like Hamonic has rescinded his trade request. But hey if he wants to come to Detroit and the Isles want Jimmy Howard I have on complaints for that... please.

and Tampa is tied for 9th in attendance which is also decent considering its a Florida team, but no one else you listed is even close to that high on the list Dallas & Nashville are both 15th (tied) in attendance and both perform poorly, relatively speaking, in their local TV markets improvement doesn't necessarily mean sustainable growth |

Yeah 9th isn't too bad for a Florida team. I wonder where Pittsburgh and Washington are on that list. Oh 12th and 13th, cool. Improvement doesn't mean sustained success but it has to start somewhere no? And I didn't say LA wasn't a basketball/baseball/tons of other shit type city. But their hockey fan base has absolutely grown. The same could be said for Dallas though to a lesser extent with the attendance. The NHL will never be popular in comparison to other sports, just look at those NBA and MLB ratings. That's not an argument I was making. I just think some markets have shown recent growth and potential. |

the Penguins are 6th in attendance (424 consecutive sellouts) and #1 in local TV ratings (although some outlets have them at #2 with Buffalo passing them. conflicting reports) the Penguins will most likely break the NHL sellout steak record (487;Avalanche 1995-2006) early in the 2018 season (64 more sellouts to break) |
