What happens when there is a penalty with 3 v 3? Do you go 3 v 2? If so I would absolutely hate this. This would destroy the game. Putting an extra player on the team with the PP making it 4 v 3 would be much much better.

The coach's challenge is coming next year in limited capacity. Article is mostly about 3vs3 OT, so skip to the last paragraph.

Expansion happening. Vegas seems weird, should be Seattle and QC IMO.

So we'll know by mid to late August about expansion I'm guessing. If Vegas is as guaranteed as we think, who is the other? Portland? Milwaukee? GTA? Quebec?

Exactly. Would be the same way they do a two-man advantage now by putting another player out.

I agree it seems weird, but apparently Vegas already has like 11,000 deposits on season tickets should they get a team (I think that's what I read). Does kinda feel like an XFL kinda deal though, in that the charm will wear off in Vegas very quickly. By year two the people there won't care. At least that's my fear.

How awesome would it be if Gary Bettman came out to announce the "Most Butt Hurt Franchise of 2014 - 2015" to be Phoenix Coyotes and proceed to announce the Las Vegas Aces. Boom. Would admire him forever

Yeah I'm a little worried about it but it seems like it's gonna happen and at least ownership seems to be doing this smartly.

I think it's them and Portland or Milwaukee. Quebec would be great but then that means Detroit or Columbus would have to go back West.

You don't see Seattle as a very real possibility? I hadn't heard Milwaukee was even making a play but I know Wisconsin loves their hockey. A team there would be awesome.

Beats a shootout IMO, not like this is soccer where most shots go in. The goalie has a huge advantage.

The arena is the big question mark in Seattle. Milwaukee was mentioned this afternoon, by Bettman as having interest in the past and last I heard they were gonna get a new arena. Also fit into the Central.

I'm with you. I mean before the shootout an average of 11 games per team ended in a tie. 11 out of 82 games bug you that much more than the skewed point system and standing we have now?

Re: The NHL Thread

I don't get why people are so against ties. Especially when some shootouts go 5+ guys deep and you have dudes like Andrew Shaw determining the outcome of the game. I think they should go 5m 4v4, 5m 3v3, tie.

Maybe it will wear off if they get a new team in a different sport, but the people of Vegas know that to get a baseball team or basketball team, a hockey team has to work.

As for expansion, bring back the Hartford Whalers!!! I miss going to Islanders games there. It was much closer than Long Island.

Re: The NHL Thread

Unless two of the applications for expansion are just so good that they can't pass up both, Vegas is probably a for sure thing. I mean I'd be shocked if they weren't. So if Quebec is the other one, I wouldn't be surprised if Detroit goes to the Central and they go to the scheduling matrix they had proposed when they talked about the 4 conferences. Play the teams in the other 3 division once at home and once on the road, the rest of games in division and the playoffs be strictly in the division. That would eliminate most of their gripes. I'd rather be in the East but if it has to happen that is the only way I see it happening.

But if it's Seattle or Portland along with Vegas, what do the divisions look like? Seattle or Portland would have to be in the Pacific because of the rivalry they could have with the Canucks. But Vegas is close to AZ and LA so that would make sense for them. Do they breakup EDM and CGY? I doubt that. Someone tried to tell me it was the same as breaking up Chicago and Detroit and sorry no it's not, sorry. Just from logistics Detroit was in another timezone and for year while Detroit was good Chicago sucked so it wasn't much of a rivalary. Edmonton/Calgary? They both have sucked for a while so good rivalry... ;)

So thoughts on that?

Re: The NHL Thread

I think the easy answer, even though it makes very little geographical sense, is put Vegas in the Central. Especially if the other team is further west. Obviously Seattle or Portland would have to be in the Pacific. Now if the two teams are Vegas and Milwaukee, then it's a no brainer that actually does make sense. Vegas to the Pacific, Milwaukee to the Central. If it's Quebec City and Vegas, looks like either Detroit or Columbus gets fucked back into the West again.

Vegas in the Central would be weird but yeah it's either that or you get into some weird things of North/South type divisions or something. Maybe you do away with divisions and just have two 16 team conferences.

I'm ready for Detroit to go back West if it's QC. And if they do the scheduling and playoff like I said then I'd accept it. Wouldn't be perfect but better than 2013 and before. I really would love to have a team back in Quebec and think a team in Southern Ontario could do well but a lot more factors come into play. The Northwest, Milwaukee or Quebec would all be great.

What's your beef with expansion? Is it not good for the growth of the game?

I really enjoy having Detroit in the East. I really don't want you guys to go back. And come on, you know you love it that all your games are done by 10pm now.
