So the way I read the CBA buyout rules the penguins have 2 use-them-or-lose-them compliance buyouts this summer? Letang and Neal?

Yes they should still have two (each team got two to use and could use them last summer or this summer) and it won't count against the cap. They won't use them on either of those two. Either one of them could still get you something in a trade if they wanted to dump them. Sure Letang has a huge salary but you think he wouldn't have gotten that on the market this summer anyway? Someone would give a nice package of picks and prospects to get an offense minded right handed dman. Same goes for Neal, he's a douche but he's a douche that scored 27 goals in 59 games. Most teams would take douche who is a 40 goal scorer. Wings fans keep asking the same about Franzen. Sure he's crazy inconsistent but he can still get you 25 goals for less than $4mil per year. You want to just let him walk, pay him for that, and then score against you? No. Scuderi? That's someone you use it on. No one will want him.

I will miss you whining about thread quality. Good thing for you bruins fans are loyal and don't add teams. :)

I don't think anyone is taking on letang's salary after his health issues this year.

Also, the fact that he would have gotten the contract he signed on the free market doesn't exactly speak to value, actually argues in favor of the contract having value.

That's what physicals are for. The other team's doctors would give him all kinds of tests, and if he's clear, take him on. Here's what happen if they buy him out.

"Kris Letang is 27 years old on the buyout date of June 15, 2014, setting the buyout ratio at 2/3 and the total buyout cost at $38,666,667 spread over 16 years. His contract was originally valued at $58,000,000 beginning in 2014 and ending in 2022, with $58,000,000 remaining from the buyout year forward...."

That's a cap hit of 2.5mil for the next 16 years, on top of the $38mil you paid him to not play for you. On top of that he is cleared to play (has been playing anyways) and some team, lets say the Flyers or Red Wings, sign him to a cheaper contract than that and the Pens have to play him 3-5 times a year and maybe in the playoffs. Sure he make a lot of money, but if he's healthy enough to play he's great for you, and if you still feel you need to get rid of him, then someone will give you something for him and you aren't paying him $38mil to do it.

Sorry you're right, I forgot about that, and just did the buyout on capgeek.com. Still $38mil to go play against you? I don't see it happening. Teams would be lining up to give him a physical and sign him as soon as he passed.

I definitely agree that they should attempt to trade him first, no doubt about that. But if they can't trade him, I think they have to buy him out; the depth issues they have are too severe to have 7 mil tied up for as long as it is with letang on anybody not named crosby or malkin.

I'll put it this say, Nathan Horton got 7 years and 37mil with more injury issues (granted not a seizure) than Letang. You think someone wouldn't want to sign him if he passed a physical?

I think they deal with it. Hard to replace a guy like him and again I don't want to spend $38mil to have him walk. Get rid of Scuderi and try to trade Fleury (someone would give him a chance at $5mil a one year) and then sign a cheaper veteran goalie. That's over 8mil saved and with MAF trade you get something in return.

I don't think the question "would another team sign this player?" is really part of the consideration that goes into deciding whether to buy a player out. I think it's pretty well established that the guy is going to sign somewhere else.

I think it's part of it. You want to pay him $38mil to go play for the Flyers? I think someone would trade him for him as long as he passes a physical, which I'm guessing he would since he's been playing. Maybe you have to take some money back but it would still be less than $38mil and you get something in return from wherever you trade him, and you have a say of where he goes.

If he's healthy, I'd take him. Not the greatest defensively but good enough and would help out offensively on the back end which they need. Plus they have $19 mil in cap space. Now what does it cost in terms of assets to get him? That's another thing. Tatar, Sheehan, Nyquist are all off limits, and probably Jurco as well. But you do have to give to get so...

They wouldnt buyout neal or letang. They could get something for both of them. Scuds can't be compliance bought out. Fleury is the best option for it, but that wont happen.
